Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Vancer on 04-14-2009

Our Helles-Style Summer Lager is a bright, golden beer, perfect for summertime. The malts we use impart a wonderful, fresh grain character, reminiscent of European lagers. The German Noble hop, Mittelfrüh, lends a mild lemony, spicy flavor.

The German word “Helles” translates as “light” and “Lager” means “to store”. This beer style emerged in Germany through the Spaten Brewery’s marriage of British, Bohemian and German brewing techniques. This style is an integral part of brewing history and a predecessor of the straw-colored, light-bodied beers which are the most widely consumed beers in the world today. The lager yeast ferments the beer more slowly and at lower temperatures; it is then stored for maturation. This results in a beer which is more smooth and drinkable. Today, many American craft brewers offer this style as a maltier and hoppier alternative to American light lagers.

When poured into my glass, the head was small sized and white with fine-large bubbles that quickly dissipated. The body was carbonated and clear with a golden hue.The nose was malty and somewhat skunky. It had a bitter flavor that left an aftertaste. The mouthfeel was tingly, smooth, thin textured, watery and medium bodied. There was virtually no lacing with this beer.

Two fingers of bright white head, a hazy pale gold color.

The aroma is of faint lemon, corn husk, and metallic characteristics.

Slight cereal grain and tbat's about it.

Overall this was a dissapointing beer. Back to the drawing board for this one.

This looks like a pretty typical lager. Light amber/yellow color. Not a lot of body or head. I always expect a salty flavor from a helles but this one is particularly mild. It's a good beer for a hot summer day but there is no need to go out of your way to try Schlafly's, which is a a shame because they typically do a great job.

S - Poured into a pint glass from a bottle

A - Poured a golden yellow with just over one finger of bright white head.

S - Faint lemon and very little else.

T - A bitter lemony cereal taste, and that's about it.

O - Overall not to my liking, but it was fresh. Wasn't what I was expecting from a summer style brew. It made me want to snack on peanuts or have a pizza. Don't get me wrong, I would have another, however I think I would first ask, "What else ya got?"

Draft, half finger head

Appearance: straw golden yellow, high carbonation

Smells: wet grain, grassy, lemons

Taste: biscuits, graham crackers, fiber wafers

mouthfeel: watery

Overall, I'd choose Konig Pilsner or Pilsner Urquell when I want a lager. I'd probably never have this again.

Poured into a thin tulip.

A: A bubbly and cloudy body is pale yellow in color and is topped off by a thin white head that leaves no lacing. Certainly active enough if not very beautiful.

S: Strong scents of grain and hay give this beer a very funky and earthy aroma. The hearty malts are complimented by a pop of hops and some faint but bright citrus. A little too funky, but fine nonetheless.

T: Malty and earthy, sure. But this taste is too faint and still too funky. The citrus is more of an implied taste than an actual characteristic. Some pepper and spice is a nice flavor, but this is too faint to be considered anything better than a simple, drinkable beer.

M: A little too heavy, but I like the carbonation, and this is a pretty appropriate feel.

O: Not much to say. It's faint, a little too funky, but pretty drinkable and unoffensive, if not quite pleasant.

Poured this 12 oz. brown bottle into a Sam Adams glass. Bottled on: 3/30/09. Fresh! The body was clear and golden yellow in color. Active carbonation visible. Modest head left a film and very minimal lace.

Smell was clean. Mild grain aroma and light citrus notes. Subdued aroma.

Taste was mildly lemony. Mildly bitter. Mildly sweet. Mildly peppery. A little too much like a macro, without the vegetal notes. I didn't detect the noble hops.

Mouthfeel was zesty and light to medium in body.

Bottled 3/22/11

Hazy light yellow gold in color. Forms a large sudsy head. Good retention. Smell is odd an unappealing: a combination of bready malt and cider vinegar. Taste is slightly more appealing with bready malts, some light noble hops, and a little beast of yeasty banana.

It has a wonder full deep golden colored body. There isn't much for bubbles or head. There is however a bit of tight lacing. It has an average lager aroma there is nothing that special about it. There are some grassy tones but that is about it. It has a grainy and light hops flavor. There is a bit of a corn tone to the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is light and easy to drink.

Smells somewhat citric and a tad of Noble hops. Nothing too special or out of the ordinary for this style.

Predominately citric in the body, which again is pretty run of the mall. Has a toasty malt note that's pretty light and restrained at the finish along with a small aspirin bitterness that hits and lingers a little. Again, not powerful or surprising.

Just a very average beer here. I know that not all beers of this style are that mundane and restrained, which is good.

A: Pours a golden straw color which is completely see through with almost no carbonation to be seen. Creates a tiny head that disappears almost instantly.

S: Smells kind of grassy with a bit of grain. Also a hoppy herbiness.

T: Very run of the mill basic lager. A little bit of a bready taste with a bit of hop bitterness in the back. It's not bad just nothing special. Still very flavorful.

M: Medium bodied. Not as watery as it looks. Has a good weight on the tongue and a has a surprising bite considering the near absence of carbonation. Goes down smooth and refreshes your mouth.

D: Easy to put them back. Pretty much a perfect lawnmowing and fishing beer. But of course you can get that for a much more reasonable price tag.

Overall: Not a bad beer by any means, it's just not something that I would pay the extra dollar-fifty a sixer for when I could just drink some Dos Equis or Modelo and get the same effect.

Served in Pilsner glass...

A: transparent, golden brew with a quarter inch of bubbly head. fades away quickly.

S: smells very much like any domestic. light greeny hop smell. other than that not much

T: crisp and clean. like white bread that been in the oven for a minute or two. very plain

M: alot of carbonation. leaves mouth feeling clean. slight bitterness after everything is said and done.

Overall, not my favorite of the schlafly beers. or maybe its just me. This entire winter I have indulged in Belgians, stouts, and dopplebocks. really complex brews with alot of flavor and alcohol. As for this beer, I just don't feel it is exceptional or unique

Poured this Helles Lager from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. This Helles poured a golden hazy straw color. It produced a average white head, it has poor retention and there was a average amount of lacing left on the glass. The aroma consists of a slight hint of grain, and hints of citrus hops. The taste of the Helles Lager is light in body, some mildly toasted malted grain, slightly sour citrus hops in the finish. Overall the beer is very smooth, drinkable. Excellent session beer/lawn mower beer. Good intro into craft beer.

original 5/19.10
bottled about 7 weeks ago; should be pretty fresh.
pours a straw color, perhaps a touch lighter than I expected. Many lines of bubbles stream their way towards the surface, but to little to keep the head from receding to a thin ring in a couple minutes. Slight cloudiness and certainly well short of bright or vibrant.
DMS is more than the background note I'd like here. Otherwise pale malt aromas are pretty fleeting and noble hops even more so. No diacetyl.
A bit sweet - not out of style. Pale malt and a general graininess are here. Faint bittering fails to balance the malts - again not out of style. Just wish the malt flavors were a little more robust. Call it 3.75 and maybe I'll eventually bump it up to "4" on flavor.
Carbonation is pretty high, body medium. Quite crisp, pretty clean, no astringency.
Mostly per style, and the areas where it differs are not fatal flaws. reasonably enjoyable beverage, a nice alternative as a lawnmower beer, but I'd like to see a bit more malt flavor here.

7/2/14
tried a fresh bottle again today. Most of this is the same, but there's overwhelming diacetyl here too now. Obtrusive in the nose, obtrusive in the flavor, and leaves a really slick body on the mouthfeel. Bumped all scores down; disappointed in this version.

Pours a clear, wan yellow with a thick and not persistent white head. However, the unimpressive appearance is this beer's weakest point. Aroma is fairly strong, malty and a little fruity, typical but still acceptable. Flavor is rather well-rounded, better than most lagers I have tried, malty with a firm undertone of apple and pear. Texture is smooth, a little thick, just a bit fizzy. All in all, fair to middlin' and worth at least a try.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a very pale straw yellow with a fizzy half finger white head that quickly fades away to nearly nothing. No lacing at all although there is fairly abundant carbonation.

Aroma is very biscuity with caramel undertones. Lots of grassy hops and hay dominate the nose. Quite nice.

A quick shot of biscuit and caramel in the flavor with spicy, grassy hops quickly following. It is a very nice interplay for a short period of time before everything just sort of fades away into nothing. Mouthfeel is quite watery but is refreshing.

Overall, a decent beer although the flavors are quite fleeting. I only wish they would hang around longer. Something I would consider picking up again, though.

A - clear golden yellow with a small head

S - grassy, grainy, and peppery.

T - light and clean taste to it. There is some bready malts and grassy hops on the finish. There is also a nice touch of spice as well.

M - nice and smooth

D - this is the definition of a summer beer. Light, easy to drink, and refreshing.

12oz bottle with bottled on date 3/16/11 poured into Maudite stemmed glass, reviewed on 6/5/11.

A: Pours a clear straw color with thin white head that leaves little lacing around glass.

S: Bready pale malts with some yeast, hints of herbal hops and a touch of alcohol.

T: Like the aroma, bready malts, a distinct yeast character with light hop flavor and little hop bitterness.

M: Smooth moderately carbonated lighter body, finishes dry.

O: Quite drinkable and refreshing, good beer to crack on this first hot day of June.

Looks like straw in a glass, with a thick fluffy cloud on top.

Hops were present in the nose, with what I think was touch of honey.

I was expecting the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. There are strong flavors from the hops and a gentle sweetness to counter the bitter before giving way to a slightly bitter finish.

It's a crisp, refreshing drink on the palate, perfect for a warm day.

It would not be hard to drink a lot of these.

An ok lager, nothing special even though it comes from one of my favorite breweries.

Pours a clear pale gold color with a medium sized head that fades quickly, leaves some good lacing on the glass.

Smell is some grassy hops. The taste is fairly well balanced between biscuity malts and grassy hops.

Mouthfeel is crisp, smooth, and a bit thin.

Overall this is a better alternative than Budweiser on a hot day.
