Munich Helles Lager |  4.50% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Helles-Style Summer Lager is a bright, golden beer, perfect for summertime. The malts we use impart a wonderful, fresh grain character, reminiscent of European lagers. The German Noble hop, Mittelfrüh, lends a mild lemony, spicy flavor.

The German word “Helles” translates as “light” and “Lager” means “to store”. This beer style emerged in Germany through the Spaten Brewery’s marriage of British, Bohemian and German brewing techniques. This style is an integral part of brewing history and a predecessor of the straw-colored, light-bodied beers which are the most widely consumed beers in the world today. The lager yeast ferments the beer more slowly and at lower temperatures; it is then stored for maturation. This results in a beer which is more smooth and drinkable. Today, many American craft brewers offer this style as a maltier and hoppier alternative to American light lagers.

I poured a bottle into a pilsener glass.

Appearance- Golden yellow with two fingers worth of white foamy head. Light amount of lacing.

Smell- Grain and malt aroma.

Taste- Biscuity malt flavor with some grassy hops and a hint of lemon-like citrus after the swallow.

Mouthfeel- Light bodied with an average amount of carbonation.

Overall- A good summer beer. Easy to drink and refreshing on a hot summer day.

Draft, half finger head

Appearance: straw golden yellow, high carbonation

Smells: wet grain, grassy, lemons

Taste: biscuits, graham crackers, fiber wafers

mouthfeel: watery

Overall, I'd choose Konig Pilsner or Pilsner Urquell when I want a lager. I'd probably never have this again.

Poured into a fluted pilsner glass.

Look: Pure golden wheat color. White fizzy head leaves a wisp, light lacing.

Aroma: Grains, malt, and faint sour hops.

Taste: A nice sweetness about it, with grains, malts, and hops playing well together. Some tangy citrus in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light.

Overall: Good summer brew, refreshing.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a very pale straw yellow with a fizzy half finger white head that quickly fades away to nearly nothing. No lacing at all although there is fairly abundant carbonation.

Aroma is very biscuity with caramel undertones. Lots of grassy hops and hay dominate the nose. Quite nice.

A quick shot of biscuit and caramel in the flavor with spicy, grassy hops quickly following. It is a very nice interplay for a short period of time before everything just sort of fades away into nothing. Mouthfeel is quite watery but is refreshing.

Overall, a decent beer although the flavors are quite fleeting. I only wish they would hang around longer. Something I would consider picking up again, though.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a dark straw hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured sweet pale malts and a slight grassy hop.

The taste consisted of the same sweet malts, cut by a light herbalness. Overly sweet in my estimation.

The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a decent lager. A bit too sweet for me.

A- Pours a partially hazed golden yellow color and appears to have a fair bit of carbonation. The head isn't overly thick and fizzles our rather quickly, settling into a thin, white, but dense layer of bubbles over the beer. The lacing of this one is modest, as some soapy foam does cling to the side of the glass, but over a time frame of about twenty seconds, it all but disappears and instead leaves behind an oily looking film.

S- This has quite a nice aroma profile, ranging from rich and malty, to slightly fruity...citrus rinds come to mind. The finish has some mild bitterness, and overall, this lends to a clean smelling beer that doesn't linger.

T- The flavors are clean and fresh....the barley malt tastes unprocessed and grainy, which in this case works for the beer. There is a modest caramel richness lingering in the background, which is offset by a crisp, lemony acidic note that helps to balance this out. The finish isn't overly bitter, but does a good job in cleaning up the palate.

M- Thin bodied and the carbonation is rather zesty....typical and expected for the style. I find this to be quite refreshing on the palate and I agree that it is a great summertime lager. I really like the mild citrus nature that keeps this from potentially becoming a cloyingly sweet beer.

O- I would say that this is a highly drinkable lager, and it stands up really well to it's American counterparts....can't say if its the best out there but it has great flavor for the style that doesn't overpower, and would be really refreshing on a hot day as a patio beer! I recommend giving this a try!
