Munich Helles Lager |  4.50% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Helles-Style Summer Lager is a bright, golden beer, perfect for summertime. The malts we use impart a wonderful, fresh grain character, reminiscent of European lagers. The German Noble hop, Mittelfrüh, lends a mild lemony, spicy flavor.

The German word “Helles” translates as “light” and “Lager” means “to store”. This beer style emerged in Germany through the Spaten Brewery’s marriage of British, Bohemian and German brewing techniques. This style is an integral part of brewing history and a predecessor of the straw-colored, light-bodied beers which are the most widely consumed beers in the world today. The lager yeast ferments the beer more slowly and at lower temperatures; it is then stored for maturation. This results in a beer which is more smooth and drinkable. Today, many American craft brewers offer this style as a maltier and hoppier alternative to American light lagers.

Presentation: 12oz brown pop top, simple Schlafly label. "Bottled with love" on 6/18/12. Into a tulip pint.

Appearance: Bright medium gold beer with a stark white cap with decent retention. Medium to medium-high, steady carbonation. Nice looking beer.

Smell: Cold, this smells like it might include adjuncts (corn), but the website says it's all malt (American 2-row, European Pils, and Carapils). As it warms, you get some pleasant (if light) grainy malt and a bit of floral Noble hop aroma. Light and delicate, but pleasant.

Taste: Light grainy malt and floral, fruity hops. Delicate, if firm, crisp hop bitterness on the finish. Somewhere between a bit richer German helles lager and a 'premium' American macro-lager. Light flavor, but pleasant, delicate flavors, unlike the macros, and certainly with a bit more hop presence.

Mouthfeel: Light, crisp, almost snappy.

Overall: Nice, light, easy-going thirst-quencher for your summer. Also, this may be the ideal 'pizza' beer for discerning beer drinkers. I'll definitely pick up a sixer or two of this next summer as well.

A-Clear yellow, not much carbonation, one finger head that doesn't last long.

S-Bread, toast, very malty, minimal grass.

T-Very sweet, bread notes dominate. Good balance not much bitterness. Grass and lemon notes come through a little more.

M-Light, nice carbonation, crisp and refreshing.

O-A decent summer beer, could use a better nose but it can hit the spot on a hot day.

A: Clear, bright golden color; lots of bubbles seen in the glass. Big rocky white head of 4+ fingers, showing good lacing and a very good amount of retention.

S: Clean, with a pilsner malt character, followed by spicy and grassy hops.

T: Nicely balanced between slight sweetness and a light amount of bitterness. Flavors also include some lemon citrus.

M: Crisp with medium carbonation and a light body. Finish is dry with lingering citrus notes.

O: Good and refreshing lager for the warm weather.

It has a wonder full deep golden colored body. There isn't much for bubbles or head. There is however a bit of tight lacing. It has an average lager aroma there is nothing that special about it. There are some grassy tones but that is about it. It has a grainy and light hops flavor. There is a bit of a corn tone to the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is light and easy to drink.

A- Clear straw yellow body with a small white head that quickly dissipates to a foam cap.

A- Light sweet malt aroma. Light earthy hops.

T- Light sweet malt, with a slight breadiness to it. Hops were very light a very faint bitterness towards the end. Sortof lemony.

M- Medium-light body and moderate-light carbonation. I think the carbonation could have been kicked up a notch.

D- A very enjoyable light beer for the horrid summers in Missouri.
