Notes/Commercial Description:
Our American IPA gets its bold hop flavor from 100% American hops and its deep gold and full body from pale and crystal malted barley. A blend of Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hop varietals imparts AIPA with bitterness and prominent aromas of citrus and fruit. Our brewers select these hops on an annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of Pacific Northwest.

IPAs (India Pale Ales) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Thanks to Crabbicuss! This one was bottled on 04/26/11. Enjoyed on 08/16/11.

A - Pours a cloudy bright orange color with a one finger white head that dissipates quickly. Leaves little lacing.

S - Lots of citrusy hops, orange zest, some sweet malts in the background. Little bit of mango as well.

T - Similar to the nose. Very citrusy hop flavor with a minor malt presence. Finish is pretty balanced with more of a fruity hop flavor and some sticky sweetness.

M - Mouthfeel is pretty good. Medium bodied with decent carbonation.

O - Overall, this is a solid American IPA. Nothing mind-blowing, but straight forward and tasty.

On tap at the Tap Room in St. Louis. Served in a snifter.

Appearance - Deep orange. A little hazy. Nice white head. Sticky lacing. Wispy surface.

Smell - Grapefruit. Hint of tropical fruits. Some orange hops. Toasty malt.

Taste - Grapefruit hops. Much less hop complexity. Toasty malt and then a musty bitter hop finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Finishes dry with a moderate bittetness.

Overall - More impressed by this than any of the other Schlafly beers I tried today. I enjoyed this with my meal.

12oz bottle to pint glass

A - Pours a pale, gold, amber with nice and consistent rings of lacing on the glass.

S - Nice piney, citrus pop.

T- As with the smell, you definitely get some tangerine, citrus, and big pine taste. Very well balanced malts in this brew. Tasty stuff. Love the AIPA's.

M - Nice brew on the plate. Just full enough and the right amount of carbonation to tingle the palate. Refreshing yet substantial.

O - Fantastic. Will definitely buy again.

Grainy appearance with a lot of carbonation. The aroma is just what you want a American IPA to have, wonderful citrus smell with a bit of piney aroma. Nice taste with a grapefruity and very slight orange, with a good bitter bite at the middle and finish that you want in a good solid IPA. Overall, this was a solid American IPA that I totally stumbled upon and would try again!”

Consumed in a snifter.

The beer has a soapy, white head that builds to a finger's width with a straight down the middle pour. The golden-copper body has amazingly clear clarity.

The nose carries dank aromatics: chive, especially garlic. Light notes of citrus do play around, mainly grapefruit in character. Malt is mainly held out of the way, mostly cracker-like in character.

The flavors of this IPA mimic the nose closely with more dank garlic and chive. Orange and grapefruit do come through, but not boldly. The finish brings a light, piney bite, with some more citrus. Again, malt is held well out of check, not easily discernible.

The feel of this beer is great: medium bodied, drying, long lingering hop bitterness.

Overall I was not expecting this to be such a dank hop forward IPA. The hops also play a huge role, not allowing for any kind of malt to take a foot hold in this offering. It drinks very well though, with a great heft and long drying finish.

on tap at Pazzo's (Lexington, KY)
clear amber body with good clarity; durable, creamy white head leaves the glass well coated with sticky lacing.

Aroma: moderately strong; unusual hop component is fruity but not citrusy excepting some grapefruit Also rather floral.

Flavor: a bit unusual too. Again, odd fruity component. A hint of vanilla; a touch floral. A good bit of grapefruit and grapefruit rind in the fnish and aftertaste.

Feel: light-medium bodied; medium carbonation that seems a touch low.

O: odd enough that I wonder if there's a quality control issue with this sample.
