Bottle dated 1/17/2013 poured into a DFH glass. Nice pale amber color and 2 fingers of tight head. The nose is very punchy and fresh. Strong pine and floral tones with just a hint of grapefruit.
The feel is good and firm, but the flavor seems off. The biting hoppy notes come in quickly and join with the nice bready malt to give you marmalade-like fruitiness. At mid-palate, a big, grassy, herbal, onion-like, vegetative flavor comes in and dominates everything until it reaches the back of the palate. The finish is a relief after this. That strong oniony flavor is very unpleasant on my palate.
Wow, I've had this beer before and I swear something is NOT right here. If that strange flavor is a hop, I'd like to know what hop it is so I can avoid it in the future. I have to give this one poor marks, but I'll try another batch sometime and see if I just got an odd bottle.
