Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our American IPA gets its bold hop flavor from 100% American hops and its deep gold and full body from pale and crystal malted barley. A blend of Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hop varietals imparts AIPA with bitterness and prominent aromas of citrus and fruit. Our brewers select these hops on an annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of Pacific Northwest.

IPAs (India Pale Ales) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Purchased from a local distributor in the Bronx. Should've payed attention to the bottle date. This beer was bottled in March. I purchase another beer from the same establishment, and again, it was 7 months old. Oh well, here we go. 12 ounce bottle into a nonic pint. small bone head that dissipates quickly. Gold color. Here's where it gets weird. Smell is almost nondescript. Faint hops? Tropical fruit? Malt? Can't discern. For an IPA that was bottled 7 months ago, the taste is not too bad. Getting a good amount of hops, pineapple, mango, a little pine, and finishes dry. Can't believe how tasty it is with that much age. I'd love to try this beer on draft at their tap room. I'd also love to find a fresher bottled offering. Perhaps within 1-2 months. Overall, for an IPA that's 6+ months old, I was pretty surprised.

L: Pours a hazy golden with a short lived white head. Small bits of dry hop particulate.

S: Hoppy grapefruit, apricot and mild earthy tones with a malt underbelly. A bit of white grape.

T: Hoppy citrus and grapefruit with moderate bitterness. Good maltiness and clean flavor with low esters. finishes dry.

F: low to medium body. medium carbonation.

O: This is a great IPA, nicely balanced towards the bitter side. Clean malt flavor that lets the hops take center stage. A perfectly crisp citrus bite. Really like this brew.

Pours copper with a nice puffy head, not overly tight and fades a bit more quickly than typical. Lots of sediment floats around in the glass.

Nose is a bit malt forward, bottle is a couple months old and not much hop presence in the nose at all.

Flavor is much better than expected. Isn't a malt bomb but a more balanced (still a bit more malt than I'd like) IPA. Decent bitter, but not much in the way of other hop characteristics - I get no citrus, onion, floral etc. notes. It's fine but not something I'd seek out.

A - Hazy brown/ orange with a creamy off white head with nice cling.

S - Floral, perfume, citrus, piney.

T - Huge punch of hops - citrus, grapefruit, piney, resinous, some malts present, but the bulk of the work is carried by the hops. Showcases some in your face hops, but the balance is off.

O - Solid IPA with big flavor. Definitely worth a shot.

From notes. A slightly hazy amber color with a medium off-white head. The aroma was hops forward with a little citrus, but mostly pine, grass, and herbal hops. The flavor was similar, but I thought there was more bitterness than flavor. Good malt balance. It picks up a little dankness toward the end which I didn't care for. A pretty solid IPA, but it did not meet my expectations (which may have been too high).

Enjoyed in a Tulip Glass. I was very excited by the rating of his beer. Beer yielded a decent amount of head that sustained for a while. Detected pine and floral scents in the aroma. Same with the taste. Bitter in a good way, but the pine and floral dominated and perhaps I'm just not a big fan of the hops that they used or maybe I just couldn't taste enough of them. Feels good. Very smooth. Overall, just not really a big fan of the flavor of this beer. Can see why it has been rated highly though.

Nice pouring orange amber with a bright head.
Nice typical IPA aromas with citrus, pine and malt.
Taste is right there with the aromas.
Mouth feel is real nice with a dry mouth and a good bitterness behind.
This is a good beer. Hits all the notes for an IPA but pretty average.

Pours a decent amber color with an average off-white head. American IPA has a good nose full of citrus and pine. Orange, lemon and caramel can be discerned on the tongue and there is a lingering bitterness which is reminiscent of pine.

Very nice brew, good nose. I appreciate how well balanced the beer is. Both the hops and malt get their time in the spotlight. Smooth and easy drinking, I think I'll have another.

12 oz. bottle, with bottled on date 03/02/2015 printed on the label. Another new IPA to me from Schlafly, acquired the six pack at the local beer store.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a nice burnt sienna orange color, hazed with quite a bit of dark sediment flecks. Two fingers of frothy off-white head with decent retention. Looks good.

S - Citric stone fruits: mango, peach, grapefruit, subtle caramel malts, and mild alcohol fumes. Lightly floral.

T - The taste follows the nose: juicy stone fruits - peach, apricot, mango, grapefruit bitterness. Clean fruity hops all the way.

M - The feel is smooth, crisp, & clean. Fruity hop bitterness, medium-light in body, and easy-drinking for the moderate 7.20% abv. Lingering dry hoppy bitterness.

Overall, a nice IPA offering from Schlafly. A likely contender for repeat drinking.

12oz bottle, dated 3/16/2015, poured into a Ballast Point Victory at Sea snifter.

The beer pours a nice golden copper color, light haze but good clarity with a good solid two fingers of soapy, foamy white head, good retention yielding big swatches of soapy lace. The aroma is very nice, wonderful dry, grassy hops, wildflower, light pine, spice, resin, mild tropical fruit and a touch of grapefruit citrus. The flavors echo the nose, dry, grassy hops, a touch of dank, weedy character, pine, spice and resin, light grapefruit, nice earthy bitterness, with a really sturdy pale malt backbone. The mouthfeel is nice, crisp, coating, full bodied, lively carbonation but still gentle, very dry finish.

Verdict: A really good IPA from Schlafly, dry, crisp, bitter, earthy, grassy, bright, very nice balance. It's quaffable, refreshing and delightfully bitter, definitely a good surprise from Schlafly, kudos to them.

Bottled with love on 02/23/2015

Gold with some suspended sediment and topped by a beautifully thick and creamy off-white head. Rings of webby lacing coat the glass and a bubbly layer is a permanent fixture on the surface. Smells like a handful of fresh resinous hops: sticky, spicy pine, herbal pungency, dank weed, and a hint of grapefruit. Flavor is equally hoppy, but with an added grainy note. Resinous pine, citrus rind, melon, and general green hoppy bitterness. Medium bodied, frothy mouthfeel. Oh snap, this is great stuff. Right up my hop alley.

It is very bitter and has very few redeeming qualities when swallowed. It has a great resin smell. This beer was bottled on 3/15/2015 (making it 6 days old). I concur that it leaves a very harsh taste in my mouth. Over all it's an okay enjoyable drinking beer.

Edit: The remaining three bottles in this sixpack were strangely more palatable. Not as much a feeling of unbalancedness now, and I can taste more hop character and a slight drop in bitterness. A decent IPA I guess but the discrepancy in taste between one sixpack is unusual to me. I still wouldn't rate it over a 3/5 overall.

I would dissect how gross this is to me, but I love so many kinds of IPAs, dank, piney, resiny, floral, fruity.. This is really not a good balance. A strange vanilla mintish essence. Full frontal bitterness that stands immediately on your taste buds with the first sip. Not the kind of bitter I enjoy, it conjures more thoughts of chemical grass-taste; and something about the feeling overall drinking these gave me made me need an extreme palate cleanse.

Maybe this is personal taste but I swear I'm being as fair as I can be with the taste of this thing. 91 is baffling. And this is certainly fresh.

A: Orange gold with a nice layered head.

S: Big citrus, tropical fruit punch, followed with some pine and faint lemongrass notes. This thing smells amazing.

T: Right in line with the nose. Tons of juicy hops and sting the tongue with a nice malt sweetness on the back end. Drying hop finish with some citrus and lemon.

M: Silky smooth. It is a little thick for the ABV, but it doesn't take away from the taste and feel.

O: If this beer originated on the west coast, it would be all the rage. Unfortunately, I think its middle america origin will make it a bit over looked. Its a shame. Schlafly has made a real gem with this one.

Great beer! The hoppy aroma is phenomenal. I will say the smell is not a direct representative of the taste. Not quite as hoppy as the smell denotes. It is a great beer in both cask and kegged versions!

My oh my this is an outstanding IPA. Schlafly has the Seasonal Special Release IPA twins, this one and the Tasmanian IPA. While Tasmanian is still my favorite, this one plays a very close second. I tasted this one on tap at the Bottleworks location.

While T-IPA is a very grapefruit/tropical fruit forward IPA, this one dials that flavor profile back a notch, and pushes the hops ever so slightly forward. The grapefruit/citrus flavors are still there, but seem to be more of a background flavor on this IPA twin. The fresh, floral hops come to the front and dance on your tongue. There is a slight grassiness here ( hop flavor I am not normally a fan of in other beers I have tried) that is exceptional here. I think it is the sweetness that seems to round out this flavor a bit more. All in all, an exceptional IPA that is easily near the top of my list of favorites.

Pour is transparent golden in color with a tight white head. Nose has a bit of slightly stale grain up front, a touch doughy, and moderate malt sweetness. Hops are herbal with a decent amount of citrus. Taste is a bit doughier and sweeter. Some stale grain, pungent sticky caramel malt, chewy feel, lots of fleshy orange citrus hop in back with low bitterness.

The beer pours some very white and fluffy head that takes a while to dissipate. The beer itself is a clear orange color.

The beer smell is very citrus and orange. The hops are fairly strong, and with a slight hint of resin. The beer also has a slight sweetness to it that gives it a slight tropical fruit note such as pineapple.

The beer taste is a bit different than the smell. The taste has a grassier taste with a sweet orange flavor and a hint of pineapple. The taste has a nice pine aftertaste.

The mouthfeel is unusually thick for an IPA, but is still medium bodied. Biting carbonation. Overall, a pretty good beer and easy extremely easy to drink. It's not a hop bomb by any definition, but certainly enjoyable.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Pours a hazy, deep golden color. Small head without much lacing.

Smells a little malty, which is odd. Maybe even a little sour. Not a whole lot of citrus, but it is here.

Taste is pretty hop forward at first, but falls of and a slight maltiness takes over. Aftertaste of hops with a little sweetness. Not much hoppy citrus, which I think is odd for an American style IPA.

Nice feel on the mouth. A little thick and malty. Not as crisp or light as most IPAs.

Good beer. Easy to drink.

Pours a golden body with two finger head and a lace ring that dies slow. Classic citric hop aroma with minimal sweet caramel and a hint of bread. Smooth, dry, the hops are juicy and a bit floral at times as citric flavors abound and there is quality balance with touches of both bread and sweet malts to keep hops from overpowering everything. Classic American style IPA that is a great, simple beer to relax with.

This is a re-review. My original review is below.

A: slight haze; deep gold in color; with a fairly aggressive pour, a 2 finger ivory head that receded slowly to a thick cap; very nice lacing;

S: really nice - pine with a touch of caramel behind it;

T: earthy and metallic; pine comes through a bit at the end; moderately bitter on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation;

O: unfortunately, the flavor didn't match the aroma;

Original review 6/8/2014

A: hazy, burnt orange; 1 finger head that receded over a couple minutes; minimal lacing; (3.25)

S: distinct peach - unexpected and intriguing; (3.0)

T: a bit of peach upfront; some pineapple crept in that lasted through the middle; the finish is red grapefruit; almost no bitterness; (3.0)

M: seems a little syrupy, but that might be in my head from the peach nose; carbonation is a little light; (2.75)

O: interesting and different; refreshing in a way I don't expect from an IPA; my scores are low because this didn't seem to fit the IPA category; as a fruit beer, this was nice; other reviews are quite different than mine, so I might have gotten an off bottle; (3.0)

Deep golden pour, good clarity with a small half finger cap of tight white foam. Sloppy lacing coats the glass, quite a bit is slipping down towards the liquid.

Powerful aroma, you can smell it right out of the bottle. Vibrant splash of grapefruit and pineapple atop citrus and pine. Rather floral with underlying honey sweetness and mint.

Pale two row is slightly bready with a drop of honey sweetness. Tangerine and pine are turned on full bore with honeydew melon settling in near the finish. The hops are resiny and features overripe tropical juices. A bitter shock and alcohol but it isn't lasting.

Crisp and sharp body and carbonation. Doesn't feature alot of drying since the character of this beer is juicy. Some rising alcohol.

This is a very good IPA, juicy, floral and variant. Very crisp and bright, wish I had a few more of these.
