Notes & Commercial Description:

Our American IPA gets its bold hop flavor from 100% American hops and its deep gold and full body from pale and crystal malted barley. A blend of Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hop varietals imparts AIPA with bitterness and prominent aromas of citrus and fruit. Our brewers select these hops on an annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of Pacific Northwest.

IPAs (India Pale Ales) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

A: Fairly transparent but with visible floating sediment. Nice well-formed white head. Sparse visible carbonation. Moderate lacing on the glass.

S: It's very catty, with a hint of resin, and some citrus thrown in the mix. It smells very fresh, although it is exactly one month past the date on the bottle. Some alcohol is present in the nose.

T: I get a grapefruit rind right off the bat, then it's followed by a toasted wheat biscuit flavor. It's very bitter. Some alcohol peeps through at times. Catty flavor...

M: Very dry, with lingering bitterness. There is a harshness...a rough edge to the bitterness. It's nothing bad...just something to note.

O: Overall I really enjoyed the beer and I would recommend it. It's very bitter with a good amount of hop character. I think that fans of any style of IPA from any region would enjoy this beer. I know that some IPAs don't really satisfy that "hop fix," but this beer is certain to satisfy any hop cravings.

12 ounce bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It is amber with golden highlights. It has a slight haze to it. On top sat an inch of off-white head.

S - I get some citrus and that foreboding skuny weed smell.

T - It starts out all nice with the citrus flavors. Then it slaps you in the face with skunky bitterness. I think this is a simcoe hops trait, but I am ignorant to specific hop profile save a few.

M - Moderate

O - This IPA does not represent the characteristics that I like. I don't care for the extreme bitterness and skunky taste. Call me a pussy, but I like the citrusy mid-western style IPA's. I am not saying this is a bad beer. Just not to my liking. If you like the real bitter skunk weed IPA's then this is for you.

A- pours golden on color with a small white foamy head with decent retention, good lace sticking

S- citrusy and grassy hop resin, sweet cracker-like malt

T- grapefruit citrus-like hop with some lemony grass, sweet-yet-crackery malt backbone, dry finish with pungent citrus hop linger

M- medium-light body, creamy mouthfeel, smooth finish, quite drinkable for nearly 8%.

O- pretty good, borderline DIPA, I did however prefer the 'T' version over this one.

Pours an orange tinted clear golden color, medium white frothy head.

Smell is bright citrus, mostly orange.

Taste also has that bright orange citrus quality, some lemon zest too maybe, it's almost acidic in the way orange juice is.

Another really good IPA/pale from Schlafly, not quite as good as the TIPA but still good to have around.
