Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Hefeweizen is a light, unfiltered wheat beer, often served with a wedge of lemon. Made with thirty percent American winter wheat, Hefeweizen is balanced with sweet golden malted barley and Tettnang hops from Oregon that evoke a hint of spice. The American ale yeast is subtle, but the grains take center stage and, when left in the unfiltered beer, gives it that classic cloudiness and additional body.

The German Hefeweizen (say “hay-fuh-vite-sin”) traces its history to 16th century Bavaria and eventually came to America with the wave of German immigrants in the 19th century. Although the rise of light lager beer diminished the sales of wheat beers on both sides of the Atlantic, the sale of wheat beers began to rise after WWII, especially in Southern Germany where a unique ale yeast strain fermented the beer with banana and clove esters. In the late 20th Century, the new American craft brewers sought out a lighter style to complement their beer selection and brewed Hefeweizens with the same yeast strains they used to brew their Pale Ales and Stouts.

Bottled with love on Jul 24 07. Poured using a technique found on Schlafly's website. Poured an inch and a half of it in to a clear pint glass. Swirled the bottle around for about ten seconds to gather all the wheat from the bottom. Poured the rest medium speed in to the pint glass. Has a beautiful cloudy golden color common in wheat beers. Head was a nice two finger width and dissipated quickly. Smell was not over powering but I could tell it was there. Taste was that of wheat with very little hop taste. Not too sweet but, bitter enough to balance it out. Mouthfeel was good but not the best of other wheat beers. This was a very drinkable beer. I will buy this beer again and would recommend it to any beer lover. Can't wait to try it on-tap at Hop In The City.

I poured a bottle into a weizen glass.

Appearance- Hazy golden yellow with two fingers worth of head that sticks around for a little while. Fair amount of runny lacing.

Smell- Light aromas of wheat grain and straw.

Taste- Wheat grain flavor with some lemon and some tartness on the back end. I'm not detecting any banana or clove esters that is usually associated with this style.

Mouthfeel- Light bodied and slightly dry with an average amount of carbonation.

Overall- A refreshing beer that is worth having again. It reminds me more of an American wheat beer instead of a hefeweizen though.

12oz can
A) Pours with a finger thick head that settles quickly leaving a thin lacing at the edge of the glass. Yellow-gold in color. Slightly hazy body but still some transparency.
S) Wheaty. Hints of lemon. Not overly aromatic.
T) Grainy. Hints of clove and banana.
M) Light body. Dry. Chalky. Alcohol warmth.
O) A hefeweizen with a weak body and taste profile, and a not as hazy as the style norm. An okay beer.
