Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Hefeweizen is a light, unfiltered wheat beer, often served with a wedge of lemon. Made with thirty percent American winter wheat, Hefeweizen is balanced with sweet golden malted barley and Tettnang hops from Oregon that evoke a hint of spice. The American ale yeast is subtle, but the grains take center stage and, when left in the unfiltered beer, gives it that classic cloudiness and additional body.

The German Hefeweizen (say “hay-fuh-vite-sin”) traces its history to 16th century Bavaria and eventually came to America with the wave of German immigrants in the 19th century. Although the rise of light lager beer diminished the sales of wheat beers on both sides of the Atlantic, the sale of wheat beers began to rise after WWII, especially in Southern Germany where a unique ale yeast strain fermented the beer with banana and clove esters. In the late 20th Century, the new American craft brewers sought out a lighter style to complement their beer selection and brewed Hefeweizens with the same yeast strains they used to brew their Pale Ales and Stouts.

Pale straw-yellow liquid under a half-inch fluffy head arrives in a 4 oz taster at the Black Dog BBQ and beer in Urbana, IL (see my review in BeerFly).

Smell is pineapple and clove rather than banana, and the smell is subdued all around. Perhaps it's drinking this lighter summer beer after a hearty snowfall, but I'm just not feeling it.

The taste is a bit thin, although this is true to style at 3.9%, but I've had plenty of flavorful lower-alcohol beer, particularly Hefeweizen. There's just something missing here. Ends very yeasty in a rather unpleasant way.

Quaffable at 3.9%; I just don't see why anyone would bother.

Schlafley generally leaves me cold, and I tasted this blind and so do not demure from expressing my disappointment in the brewer generally.

In true Bavarian form, St. Louis' premiere craft brewery doesn't miss a beat. Its highly complex rendition of the unfiltered wheat ale delivers all the complexity and and ease in drinking that the Hefeweizens of Germany promise.

Its rich canary haze delivers dense aromas of fresh baking bread, dough and sugar cookie. With citrus and tropical wafts swirling about, its taste is spicy, backed with the grain sweetness and malted taste that's uniquely German.

The delicate ale simply blooms across the middle, opening up the unique banana, apple and lemon esters along side of its distinctive clove, white pepper and vanilla spices that work in tandem, negating the need for hop flavor or bitterness beyond a timid herbal accompaniment.

Its creamy and medium body is pillowy and softly of marshmallow, especially as vanilla and mint cool the palate and balance its raw grain flavor and feel in finish. With aftertaste of light bread and citrus, another series of gulps are sure to follow!

Appearance:
Hazy hay colored body that pours with a small, white head. Retention is poor, fading to nothing in minutes. Light streams of carbonation.

Aroma:
Light, damp hay notes mixed with sweet malts and subtle citrus. Sweet corn, pear, and apple notes along with an incredibly mild spice give it a nice aroma... but it's not like any hefeweizen I've had before, but it's pleasant.

Taste:
Again, this isn't your typical hefe. Reminds me more of a light American lager than it does a hefe. Bummer. Sweet wheat and light corn notes and a bit of lemon peel.

Mouthfeel:
Light bodied beer with medium carbonation. Crisp and easy to drink.

Overall:
A solid beer that is very refreshing and light. Decent flavor, BUT, missing a lot of the signature traits a hefeweizen should have. And that, is it's downfall. Remove the style from the picture, this is a heck of a beer, but if you want banana and clove or bubblegum - go elsewhere.
