Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Hefeweizen is a light, unfiltered wheat beer, often served with a wedge of lemon. Made with thirty percent American winter wheat, Hefeweizen is balanced with sweet golden malted barley and Tettnang hops from Oregon that evoke a hint of spice. The American ale yeast is subtle, but the grains take center stage and, when left in the unfiltered beer, gives it that classic cloudiness and additional body.

The German Hefeweizen (say “hay-fuh-vite-sin”) traces its history to 16th century Bavaria and eventually came to America with the wave of German immigrants in the 19th century. Although the rise of light lager beer diminished the sales of wheat beers on both sides of the Atlantic, the sale of wheat beers began to rise after WWII, especially in Southern Germany where a unique ale yeast strain fermented the beer with banana and clove esters. In the late 20th Century, the new American craft brewers sought out a lighter style to complement their beer selection and brewed Hefeweizens with the same yeast strains they used to brew their Pale Ales and Stouts.

Delicious, not bitter. The taste is clean and rather sharp, unlike some other unfiltered wheat beers I've tried. Of the wheats I've had, this is my favorite.

12 oz can, poured into a bell glass at approximately 40 degrees F.

A: Poured very, very pale, like water with a hint of an echo of the shadow of a yellowish tinge. In the glass, it takes on a little more color, turning a polished gold hue. It looks more like a dark cider than a hefeweizen, forming a minimal head that dies away quickly and appearing more hazy than cloudy. It does leave some scattered patches of persistent lacing on the glass.

S: The aroma is primarily wheat and grain fields, with a few hints of clove and something slightly bubble-gum-esque. Not much in the way of fruit odors.

T: With all respects to Douglas Adams, the taste is not almost, but not quite, exactly unlike a hefeweizen. This drinks more like a yellow lager, with the same sort of hop profile - wheaten and grassy, with a slight citrus tang. None of the clove or bubblegum from the nose appears, and none of the fruity esters one would expect from a hefeweizen seem to be present.

M: Watery, but with rather active carbonation.

O: There are many better examples of the hefeweizen style out there. This seems almost mislabeled, more like a pale wheat ale.
