Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Hefeweizen is a light, unfiltered wheat beer, often served with a wedge of lemon. Made with thirty percent American winter wheat, Hefeweizen is balanced with sweet golden malted barley and Tettnang hops from Oregon that evoke a hint of spice. The American ale yeast is subtle, but the grains take center stage and, when left in the unfiltered beer, gives it that classic cloudiness and additional body.

The German Hefeweizen (say “hay-fuh-vite-sin”) traces its history to 16th century Bavaria and eventually came to America with the wave of German immigrants in the 19th century. Although the rise of light lager beer diminished the sales of wheat beers on both sides of the Atlantic, the sale of wheat beers began to rise after WWII, especially in Southern Germany where a unique ale yeast strain fermented the beer with banana and clove esters. In the late 20th Century, the new American craft brewers sought out a lighter style to complement their beer selection and brewed Hefeweizens with the same yeast strains they used to brew their Pale Ales and Stouts.

Appearance: Pours a medium hazy body that is bright straw yellow. Head of about a finger which dissipated quickly which was slightly odd for a hefe. On par with the head, the active carbonation is below average but still pretty good.

Smell: Cereal and biscuit notes greet the drinker. Fresh cut straw with some very light vegetal greens on the body. Crisp buttery yeast and more dough and toasted malts on the back end.

Taste: Creamy malts and biscuit all over the front and linger into the body. A touch of banana with some semi-sweet toasted malts follow the front. Some light vegetal notes pop up on the body then as quickly as they came they disappear. The finish is creamy malts with lingering buttery yeast.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is very light on the mouthfeel which really lets the creamy malt and butter shine through. Lighter in body but very drinkable.

Overall: Not the most traditional feel for a Hefe but in the end what it brings is tasty and highly drinkable. The butter and biscuit notes are the highlights. An awesome grilling, or finisher beer for sure.

In true Bavarian form, St. Louis' premiere craft brewery doesn't miss a beat. Its highly complex rendition of the unfiltered wheat ale delivers all the complexity and and ease in drinking that the Hefeweizens of Germany promise.

Its rich canary haze delivers dense aromas of fresh baking bread, dough and sugar cookie. With citrus and tropical wafts swirling about, its taste is spicy, backed with the grain sweetness and malted taste that's uniquely German.

The delicate ale simply blooms across the middle, opening up the unique banana, apple and lemon esters along side of its distinctive clove, white pepper and vanilla spices that work in tandem, negating the need for hop flavor or bitterness beyond a timid herbal accompaniment.

Its creamy and medium body is pillowy and softly of marshmallow, especially as vanilla and mint cool the palate and balance its raw grain flavor and feel in finish. With aftertaste of light bread and citrus, another series of gulps are sure to follow!
