Style | ABV
English Porter |  5.40% ABV

Availability: Fall

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Porter is a dark ale with a mild roasted character and a distinct sweetness from caramel malt. This medium-bodied porter has a velvety body with Pilgrim hops adding a subtle bitterness and East Kent Goldings hops adding aroma and flavor. The English yeast helps showcase all of these flavors in this traditional British-style porter.

In 18th Century London, the word porter was first used to describe a relatively strong, dark beer, popular amongst the working class. London brewers became famous for this style, as they began refining the process using better quality malt. The World Wars led to a higher tax on malt, resulting in lower alcohol strengths in porters. Porter nearly disappeared in the late 20th Century, but was re-introduced in London after small American brewers revitalized interest in the style.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 1.5 | feel: 2 | overall: 2

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into an ale glass

Appearance: Dense, very dark brown color with a thin, quickly dissipating tan head

Aroma: Overall there is very little aroma, but with repeat evaluation there are faint hints of walnuts, earth, and pine needles.

Taste: Harsh hops are out of balance with any malt flavors

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a brief bitter aftertaste

Overall, I was disappointed with this rather bland, tasteless, out-of-balance porter.

From 1/24/14 notes.

a - Pours a dark brown color with one inch of light tan head and light carbonation evident. Looks pretty good.

s - Smells of vanilla, cream, roasted malts, light milk chocolate, and toasted malts. Nice nose.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark fruits, chalk, chocolate, cream, and toasted malts. Slight step down from the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a nice porter. Easy to drink and a nice nose, though the taste is a bit chalky. Worth checking out, would have it again.

pours out a dark brown colour with chestnut hues. a thin tan head appears and dies down quickly to some sparse lace. aroma of dark roasted malts with accents of molasses, cocoa, caramel, nougat and ripe red fruit covered in chocolate. the taste provides the same nuances as the nose did, with a yeasty, chalky base and some english hops for good measure. sort of baltic porter in nature, this offering really provides some depth of character and enjoyable flavours. this is described as an ale, but the medium body seems lagerish to me, with a velvety/chalky mouthfeel and lingering gentle bitterness. this is highly drinkable and quite enjoyable.

overall a really top notch porter in my opinion. i would highly recommend this for the winter season. great brew from Schlafly!!

Appearance - It is dark brown to a black color, with a tan head.

Smell - It is a nice roasted malt smell, with a hint of mocha, chocolate, and coffee.

Taste - Like the smell, its basically like a lighter stout. But with a bit of hops at the end.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied, but the carbonation is a bit too much.

Overall - I enjoyed this porter, but the carbonation is too high and it feels like I am drinking a AAL.

A- Pours a deep, deep brown in color, almost black, with a little bit of light getting through the edges. The light gives the edges of the beer a red tinge. About a 1 finger head forms and retains very well. Lacing is ok.

S- Classic, dark roasts and burnt malts. Rich with a mild amount of bitter coffee and a slight hint of semisweet chocolate.

T- Just like the scent. Starts with a slight bit of bitterness up front, mostly of the coffee and dark chocolate variety. Pretty one dimensional all the way through to the end, where it ends with a slightly elevated coffee bitterness bite.

M- Light and smooth like a good porter should be. Heavy flavors and appearance lead you to believe a heavy drinking beer, but this beer drinks more like a German lager, minus the creaminess. High in carbonation.

Overall, just a standard, everyday, solid porter. Good flavors, good feel, and a good overall and dark beer to drink regularly.

Poured into a shaker pint.

Look: A cola black color with ruby coming through in the light. A dark cream colored head sits on top with great retention. Sudsy lacing remains.

Aroma: Dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, hints of coffee.

Taste: Roasted malt flavors at first, faint vanilla sweetness, bitter dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel: A bit watery and cola-like, highly drinkable.

Overall: A vanilla presence comes on more the longer I drink this. Very good tasting porter.
