BEER INFO

Brewed by:
The Schlafly Tap Room
Missouri, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

A - nice golden amber murky color, white head that sticks and leaves nice lacing
S - Nice bitter grapefruit, overly ripe fruit, dank, mango, papaya, kiwi
T - Immediate fresh orange/lemon/lime zest, bitter grapefruit rind, kiwi, mango, papaya, very dry, almost no malt character is discernable (which is a good thing for an IPA)
M - light - medium mouthfeel, alc is completely covered, after taste is bitter citrus peel, fresh citrus fruit, bitter
O - this is an awesome beer, and a nice surprise for Missouri. I have a hard time finding great beers from Missouri other than the big Boulevard Beers and Mother's Milf. This is probable the first rock solid IPA I've had from Missouri.

Look - yellow color with a good head and slight lacing
smell - great galaxy hop scent, tropical fruit... pineapple citrus scents. Great malt backbone.
taste - pineapple and lemon citrus taste like the smell but still with that good maltiness. Sweet but not to sweet and not to bitter as well.
feel - medium body and carbonation.
overall - fantastic Galaxy IPA. Love galaxy hops!

Schlafly never fails to wow me with their "special release" beers!

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle to a pint glass, pours a clear golden orange with a half finger off white head, keeps a solid lacing throughout.

A fruity, hoppy aroma stands out that'll make any hop head like myself's mouth water in anticipation.

The taste is much of the same, hops up front followed by mango, peach and citrus. Finishes off with a light maltyness that balances well with the hops.
Mouth feel is slightly resiny /oily.

All and all this is an excellent beer that will be my choice session brew while it is available. Anyone that appreciates hops and a well balanced IPA would love it!

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a bright, slightly hazed, straw-gold coloring with some sedimentation throughout and a clingy, frothy, bright white head. Steady flow of carbonation throughout the body, as well. Aromas of tangerine, orange zest, grapefruit, lime, and melon, with hints of bitterness. This smells amazing. Flavors are a heavy dose of citrus sweet and tart forward, with a tangy melon characteristic once again coming through. A bit more bitterness in the backbone, with a subtle spice building at the end of the palate. Peppery, giving an edge to all the sweet and tart notes throughout, and providing a more solid, bitter backbone into the aftertaste, as well. Mid-bodied, but with a slightly sharp, effervesced edge to it, keeping it refreshing and somewhat on the light side. The finish is slightly frothy, with a tart and bitter power struggle continuing on right to the end. Hints of resinous characteristics finally come through, but only in the finishing linger. Pretty damn solid IPA...and the dynamic and rich flavor profiles hide the slightly elevated ABV very well.

Bottle courtesy of Brandon and bottle dated as just over three weeks old. Ughh...probably a gross, stale fallen off shell of a hoppy beer by now.

Pours a slightly hazed light yellow with a nice crown that sticks around...like British royalty. Lace like post prom.

Smells of green onion and tangerine.

Taste starts Summit-like...big onion...and moves into a vegetative dankness. The finish brightens up with sugared fruit slices...mango and orange with a trailing light sweetness and lingering fruitiness on the tongue.

Thank you Brandon for helping with a want here. A very nice IPA that stands neck-and-neck with, if not above, many of the IPA's I drank this past weekend in Portland.

"Bottled with love on 9/24"

A- A light haze within a yellow orange body. A great lacing yielded from a classic two finger fluffy head. A classic, but lighter than usual.

S- Citrus and tropical fruit notes of mango, starfruit, and unripe kiwi. There isn't really any malt in the nose.

T- My first though was, this tastes like the mooted juice of the chopped fruits in the nose mixed with the childhood thrill of Tang. There is some sweetness and a little of the English IPA take. A bit of bit for the 7.2% ABV to cut though everything.

M-Lightly carbonated, smooth, and tangy finish. Much lighter than the usual APA or IPA you are use to

Overall: Forget the 30 day rule: Seek, Acquire, Consume

Glass Used: Nonic pint

Appearance: Hazy golden-orange with an egg shell white two finger dense foamy head. The lace left behind was ample.

Smell: A very delectable sweet grapefruit and pineapple aroma that kept my nose in the glass. Very tropical smelling.

Taste: Full sweet citrus all the way through - orange, pineapple, and some other tropical fruity flavor that has me wanting another swig from the glass. The malt is there toward the end as well. The finish leaves a grassy floral hop note which is downright comforting and relaxing to me.

Mouthfeel:Lip smackingly delicious. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: The more Schlafly I drink, the more I wish they distributed in Dallas. I have not had a bad brew from them and the ones I have had have been down right tasty. Another hearty thanks to Pintofbrown for including this one in our trade.

Pours a clear gold body under a small fizzy white head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is nicely hoppy, very citrusy and fruity with a minimal malt influence. This aroma is all about the hops. The flavor is really juicy and fruity up front, but there’s still a fairly sufficient amount of bitterness as well. Nice lingering hoppiness on the finish. Fairly light, but decently dry and doughy malt backbone. Light bodied with soft fizzy carbonation.

Had it earlier and having it now with all the time in the world. Bottle dated 12/13/2012, so it is still very fresh.

Appearance: Pours absolutely pale in color. Almost clear. some minor haze due to dry hopping. A good one finger thick head of off-white color that fades to a small thin layer that persists well. Excellent lacing that sticks really well. Some bubbles.

Aroma: All citrus, flowery and grassy aroma that stays well but keeps fading. When opening the bottle, a burst of flowery hop aroma enters the nose.

Flavor: Nice bitterness of galaxy hops upfront, good malt backbone and delicious bitter finish. Some raw mango touch, herbal and grassy. Front part of the nose is left with an altogether different sensation. Raging and numb at the same time. Nice flavor overall. No sweetness throughout. Somewhat oily feel. Aftertaste is full of bitterness that is nice and strong.

Mouth feel: Light to slightly medium feel. Moderate carbonation. Hope derived astringency. Nice, easy and smooth.

Good IPA overall. Nothing out of the box but worth trying nonetheless. It is fairly close to Zombie Dust, as someone said while giving it to me the first time.

Presentation: 12 oz. bottle chilled and poured into a pint glass. I couldn't find a freshness date on the bottle, but it definitely tasted very fresh.

Appearance: Pale yellow in color with a slight touch of haze toward the thicker end of the glass. Two finger creamy white head with really solid retention. A really nice lacing up and down the glass.

Aroma: Mango, passionfruit, and pineapple notes all burst upfront. Definitely more on the tropical than earthy / piney side. Very hop forward. Some light biscuit pale malt notes too.

Taste: Mango, pineapple and grapefruit notes dominate the taste as well. This is definitely a tropical fruit bomb. A bit more bitterness than in the arom as well. Some light honey and passionfruit as well. Really tasty, refreshing and drinkable.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and really easy to drink. Refreshing.

Overall, a really tasty, tropical fruit heavy IPA that really has a great hop profile. The malt backbone is light enough to let the hops really shine. Not the most complex profile, but really tasty and solidly executed. I really enjoyed this.

A: This pours a translucent orange with a nice white head. Fine sediment suspended at pour.

S: The smell is incredible on this one! I get the tropical citrus punch, with dough, candy, and sticky nectar.

T: The taste is delightful! I get a myriad of tastes from the citrus spectrum, followed by a doughy maltiness, followed by a florally citrus wallop! Its really an experience. Dynamic taste! Fantastic!

M: The beer is medium bodied, especially for a 7+ abv.

O: Overall another quality special release series from Schlafly - which by the way, in my opinion, makes average staple - year round available beer. This is a fantastic single hop (galaxy) IPA! Strongly recommend!

Look - Poured a small one finger head that dissipated quickly. Very light for an IPA, light amber, hazy, lot's of floaties and debris.

Smell - Floral, pineapple, citrus, tropical, dankness, pine.

Taste - Follows the nose. Pineapple, lemon zest, orange, spice, pine, bright, lower malt character, moderate bitterness. Enjoyable and unique IPA with a very hoppy taste without much of a malt balance at all.

Feel - Medium body, slightly sticky.

Overall - Enjoyable and recommended to try if you are a hop head. Not really a west coast but not as full and sweet as IPA's that carry a more balanced malt character.

Clean and golden upon pouring, with a full head of white bubbles. Heavy-duty, finely-detailed lace, too. Very nice.

Nose is sharp and tangy, with ripened grapefruit all the way. Thirst quenching and delightful!

Taste is similarly citrus-oriented, with a well-pronounced hops profile and a light, citrus-grapefruit vibe. The malt profile here works well, complimenting the hoppy tang.

A delicious IPA, and one I wish were more widely available. High marks, here.

12oz bottle in Sam Adams glass
bottled with love on 12/11/12

A: Light straw colored, crystal clear, one finger pure white head. Looks like a pils
S: Fruit, melon, floral
T: Tropical fruit punch with a definite bitterness at the back of the tongue. A slightly sweet graininess underneath. The hops linger a little bit, but it is very easy to go back for more.
M: Very crisp and a lot of carbonation, not a sipping beer.
O: A dangerously drinkable 7% beer, it tastes like I could drink a 6-pack in one sitting. Just looked at the website, says this is just 2-row and Galaxy hops, I now know why everyone loves Galaxy. A truly delicious IPA, highly recommended. I hope this becomes an annual thing.

what a solid offering from schlaflys...i smelled tangerines and other citrus hops the second i opened the bottle. the hops were smooth, sweet, and balanced. the mouthfeel was medium bodied with slight prickling on the tongue. the drinkability was off the charts, and the bottle was empty before i knew it. best brew i have ever had from schlaflys...alcohol was non-existent. i rank this up there with lagunitas little sumpin sumpin for easy drinking smooth hop experience. well done, schlaflys!

Bottle shared by Thorpe429, thanks! Beer is yellow with a minor haze, nice white head, medium bubbles, some lacing, moderate carbonation.

Aroma is all galaxy hops, fruity, mango, pineapple, smells amazing.

Beer is medium to light in body, very hoppy, a little sweet, nice beer overall. These new hops are really pushing the boundries and this is one of the better 100% galaxy hop IPAs I've had. I'd definitely have this again.

12 oz bottle into a Hoffman House chalice. Dated 10-08-12 - four days ago!

A - Brilliantly clear deep gold with a large, bright white head that falls into a thick crown.

S - Exotic tropical fruits with a resiny, green background note.

T - Inital soft honey-sweet maltiness quickly transitions into a veritable fruit salad of hop flavors with a firm, but clean bitterness. Kiwi, passionfruit and pineapple. Finish is bone dry with only mild bitterness and subtle remaining fruitiness.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation.

O - One of the finest southern hemisphere IPAs available, and at a bargain price. Buy it by the case.

Bottle poured into a snifter

Mazy, hazy golden . Three fingers of foam that gently settle down with nice lacings on the glass. Lacings hold on as I drink down the glass.

Grapefruit! Wonderful citrus bouquet of fresh squeezed grapefruit. Faint, tiny carbonation.

Smooth , crisp clean taste of citrusy hops. Clean finish with a slight bitterness at the end. Nice , light to medium weight.

I prefer malty beers but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste, smell and appearance of this Tasmanian IPA. A good beer that I would enjoy again.

I must admit that Schlafly has not done a lot to impress me over the years. As a result, I passed by Tasmanian IPA when I saw it at the liquor store. Only when I had it at a brewfest was I impressed, and consequently bought a six pack. From one of those bottles, I write this review.

From the bottle into a pint glass, the beer was a light straw color with a white head. It demonstrated generalized lacing and retention on the sides of the glass. The aroma was a combination of citrus and peach skin. The aroma was not overpowering, but well-balanced. In the initial taste, one detects peach, pine, and a mild resin flavor. The malt backbone is well disguised but there is a generalized sweetness that compensates for a lack of maltiness. In the aftertaste, the peach and citrus continues, but the resin comes to the forefront making this one a little more bitter. The linger of the hop afterbite is a little suprising because the beer runs a little this. Easily, this is the best thing Schlafly makes and probably a top ten single IPA for me.

Bottles 10/8/12 poured into Founders Bolt Cutter glass
Thanks to tut2528 for this one

Pour: A light orange-lemon color with 2 fingers of bright white head. The head consisted of small tight white bubbles with good lacing and retention. This beer upon pouring and standing for a few minutes remains cloudy .

Smell: Citrus and tropical are the dominant player in the aroma with orange, tangerine, pineapple and grapefruit. Some grass notes in there too but second to the citrus.

Taste: Quite bitter at first but also the citrus and tropical notes are at the front. Pineapple and grapefruit dominate with some orange playing a supporting role. Lemon is also noted along with some mild maltiness in the form of slight cracker and bread.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with mild carbonation. Actually pretty creamy/oily but with a dry finish to it.

Overall: Though I tend to enjoy the DIPA over IPA style, this is a very enjoyable tropical citrus bomb. Just the right amount of hop bitterness with tropical infusion creates an awesome highly drinkable IPA.

Must also mention that the lacing is something to behold as I drink this beer.

Pale gold body, good clarity, steady carbonation streams, topped by four fingers of white micro bubbles of all sizes. Good thorough drippy lace. This could sneak up on the non-craft drinker because it looks like an excellent pour of an America Lager.

Terrific fruity aroma, take your pick, mango, tangerine, grapefruit. It's a cornucopia.

Nice light semi-sweet foundation. Juicy fruit squirting all over the mouth. Mild bitter snap at the swallow. Light fruity finish.

Light medium smooth mouthfeel.

A very good seasonal IPA. Big fan of galaxy hops, and they are used well here.

At first pour this was a cloudy gold rapidly forming inch and a half head of white aromatic foaminess. My first impression was heavily floral and grapefruit like but upon further review its more pineapple and grapefruit. Taste is citrusy with bitters but not as bitter as I would have expected from the aroma. Mouth feel is carbonated but far smoother than I expected.

Pours an opaque, golden orange, with a foamy white head. Medium to light lacing. Citrus and hops tingle the nose when you take a sniff. Immediately upon taking a sip, there are notes of sweet citrus flavors, backed up by bitter hops. The sweet to bitter ratio is quite nice. As such, it is pleasant and easy to drink. The mouth feel is good. Overall, great beer right here. Pleased with it.

Served in a 12oz snifter.
