Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Megahertz on 10-12-2012

Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Poured from 12 oz bottle dated 8/19/2015 into snifter.

A: Clear golden yellow with two finger white head. Decent retention and plenty sticky lacing.

S: Grapefruit, pineapple, and lemon. Bright floral hops.

T: Light citrus with grapefruit, pineapple, and maybe a touch of lemon. Light cracker malts and subtle sweetness.

M: Medium body and average carbonation. No real hop bitterness. Very easy drinking.

O: Wonderful IPA. Very happy a picked up a wider instead of a single.

2015: 3.8
Much less intense than previous years, more of an earthy bitterness that dominantes, as opposed to the intense citrus of the past. Wondering if they use less Galaxy now since there's so much demand.

2012: 4.28
Bottled with love on 12 11 12, aww yeahh.
Served in a mini mug, it pours a bright pale gold with a creamy foam dome that rises above the rim and sits for a few minutes before settling. Good retention, and sheets of soapy lace after a couple sips. Lasting head retention.

Big citrus aroma initially, grapefruit and a little tangerine, slightly dank. After a few minutes in the glass it seems more subdued.

Orange pith, brief nectarine sweetness, balanced citrus oil bitterness and lightly bready pale malt underneath. Dry green hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Super drinkable, almost a cousin to Zombie Dust. Impressed by this beer, Schlafly should rotate this in with their American IPA...

Clear, golden/orange look. Thick white head that last a long time. Smells great. I love the citrus. Great citrus iPad flavors. Freshness is key with ipa's so I always try for local and this fits the bill. It's a thinner feel, but I usually drink stouts. Overall, get it fresh if you can, it's great.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours a really nice clear gold color with about a finger of soapy white head, medium lacing around the side.
S - Lots of pine and citrus, then you get some pineapple with some mild pale malt and a hint of rye, and slightly grassy.
T - Big fruit flavors, tangerine, orange, a touch of white grape, some pineapple, a really mild pale malt to bring it all together, some pine bitterness on the end.
M - Very dry, but still crisp and not overpowering.
O - Outstaing IPA, glad I could finally have this after hearing so much about it. The taste on this has a ton of flavor, and to think its single hopped with galaxy makes it that much better.

Served into a pint glass at Lures

A-Bright yellow with a thin white head.

S-Big aroma of citrus and pineapple - the best part of this beer. Can't put my finger on the galaxy hop smell.

T- Taste is hoppy with a light bitterness that lingers through the finish like grapefruit. Some sweetness of the pineapple but mostly gently bitter.

M-Medium carbonation and mouthfeel.

O-overall great IPA by schlafly, must get six pack

A-pours a clear, goldish type color with a two finger head and plenty of lacing

S-heavy citrus including lemon/lime, pineapple, maybe tangerine..not so much grapefruit smell, it has more of a sweeter citrus aroma

T-strong hop bite that doesn't linger too aggressively; traditional citrus peel with some grapefruit type flavors in the taste

M-not too thin, enough carbonation; fairly dry but not overly harsh aftertaste

O-a really solid IPA that delivers more on the aroma than the taste; it uses light malts to really highlight the hop aroma, but I wish there was a bit more pop in the taste

*12 oz. bottle* Look: Sunset orange body, 1 finger white head.

Smell: Very citrus (Oranges, lemon peel), toasted cracker sweetness, bit of mango and a touch of tropical flowers.

Taste: Mango, oranges, grapefruit, flowers, earthy leafiness, papaya, very solid malt backbone, semi dry mild bitter finish.

Feel: Medium smooth body, mediocre carbonation.

Overall: This is solid and also very tasty. I’m glad I tried this ale. This is balanced and enough hop flavor that it lands on what could be DIPA status. The bitter factor isn’t offensive. If you like exotic fruits/flower flavors in your beer, this is a go to. This beer is recommended.

A: The beer is hazy yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down, but left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderately strong aromas of pineapples are present in the nose along with notes of other tropical fruits.
T: Following the smell, the taste has tropical flavors of pineapples and mangos along with hints of orange citrus and a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The Australian Galaxy hops used in this beer make it very unique, particular from the pineapple aromas and flavors that they impart. I really enjoyed this beer and it was also quite drinkable.

Pours a hazy yellow with a strong orange tinge. Little lacing which dissipates quickly. Prevelant lacing for the lack of head.

Scent is tangerines, grass and gasoline.

Flavor is much the same. Yet it works more. Hops are just prevalent enough.

Mouthfeel is almost perfect. Just enough sweetness. The mouthfeel really makes this.

I dont know why these hops always taste llikegas to me. Luckily I'm getting used to it, as I like this one. Very balanced.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass, bottled 12/3/13
A: Light orange color with a 1/2-finger head that leaves a nice lacing
S: Wow what a pleasant smell. Pineapple, mango, papaya... just full of all kinds of tropical fruits. Backed by hints of earth, herbs and malts.
T: Tropical fruit but this adds a lot more malt up front to go with it. These continue through to the finish but add some herbal notes
M: Medium-bodied, fairly smooth
O: I like what the Galaxy hops add, and would really enjoy seeing them mingled with some that add citrus notes. Really enjoyable to drink

12oz bottled Dec 13 2012. Served at around 40-45F.

Pours semi-hazy yellow/gold with a one finger white head that leaves lots of spots of lacing and maintains a very good cap.

Aroma is nice lemon citrus, pineapple, somewhat grassy and floral, biscuit, doughy malt. Very good strength.

Flavor is lemon citrus, pineapple, grassy, floral hops, grapefruit rind, tropical fruit, malt is light and unobtrusive, cracker, bread, biscuit. Minimal sweetness, very good bitterness, some alcohol on the finish. Very dry.

Mouthfeel is light/medium bodied, good carbonation.

Wow, this is some awesome stuff! Very hoppy, unbalanced, just the way I like it. Love pineapple in my IPAs and this delivers. Reminds me a bit of a baby Founders Double Trouble.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a fairly hazy light straw yellow with a one finger white head. Ok lacing and head retention and really the overall appearance isn't all that impressive.

The aroma on this really blows me away! i love the tropical fruit nose this one puts out. Tons of pinapple and mango but there are also some really nice Earthy undertones. A touch of dankness in there even.

The flavor just continues the tropical fruit explosion. More pineapple and mango along with that tea-like earthiness that is present in the aroma. Bitterness is on the medium to high side along with a slightly chalky mouthfeel. More stickyness in the finish than I was anticipating but it works.

Overall, a very tasty IPA. I love the Galaxy hop and it is showcased beautifully here. A really nice, unique, IPA that is worth picking up.

Poured from a growler.

Pours a nice straw gold color. Kinda hazy. Big foamy, marshmallows head that hangs around. Great lacing.

Smell is of tropical fruit. Pineapple, mango, grapefruit are all present. Kind of a rich yeasty smell as well.

Taste is right upfront with tropical fruit. Pineapple, mango, with a slight grapefruit twang. Mellows into a slight hop bitterness that lingers a little bit. Not overly hoppy, but very light and refreshing.

Mouthfeel isn't too crisp, but is slightly creamy.

Great floral IPA. Very different with all the tropical flavors.

L: It pours a golden yellow with a thin white head which quickly turns into a very fine lace. The beer is opaque and there are a lot of particulates floating in it with almost no carbonation bubbles. One of the least appealing IPAs to look at that I have come across.

S: Fortunately, the smell is great. Extremely bright tropical and citrus notes greet your nose with mango, papaya, pineapple and passion fruit. There is a little bit of a floral smell underneath and some cattiness, with no hints of malt presence. Certainly an Australian beer. It's just bursting with those Galaxy hops and I could smell them all day.

T: The tropical notes that you can smell are bursting right up front and dominate the body of the beer. The pale malt backbone balances them out a bit with some touches of floral hops, but tropical fruits dominate everything. A great showcase for Australian hops. My only complaint for such a hop showcase is the cattiness which comes in on the finish. It's a bit unpleasant after all the mango, pineapple and passion fruit notes in the body, but it's not terrible by any means.

F: Bright, crisply zesty and a little bready. Very pleasant, but the bready malt feel detracts a bit.

O: A great Australian IPA. I've really grown fond of these Galaxy hops lately and this beer doesn't disappoint. I think it would make a great summer seasonal IPA because of its light, crisp, tropical flavor, but they put it out in the fall. This is too bad in my opinion because I would be more likely to buy this for a hot summer day to drink while grilling than in the fall when I'm more prone to drink darker beers.

This beer was poured from a 12oz bottle into a Blind Pig mug at apx 55F.

Appearance- 2 cm white, thick head. distorted, transparent, yellow-orange color. Crisp.

Aroma-Smells of citrus. Strong grapefruit and hint of lychee juice. Also some peach notes. Could be some pine in there, but that might be because I was looking at a christmas tree...

Taste-Yes. Citrus up front being mostly grapefruit. Aroma expands and fills the mouth. Once down tarty bitterness hangs with a resiny, malty finish. Tastes like it smells

Mouthfeel- medium to light. not full bodied by any means. sessionable beer.

Overall- great to try a different hop variety. I'd say Schlafly did a very good job with this one. i'd definitely have it again

Damn good ipa. Pineapple citrus flavors are delicious and balanced out so perfectly by a nice earthy hop finish. My biggest complaint is consistency had the February batch and the pineapple was the main event, and the September batch seems to be much more herbal and grassy. Still awesome amount of drink ability but not at all the same beer.

Pours light golden. Aromas of citrus, with subtle pine. Taste is good balance of malt and hops. 7% ABV not noticeable. Carbonation just right. Highly drinkable. Finish is subtle, grapefruit notes but not overly bitter. Great IPA to kick off the summer.

I really like this beer. I wrote earlier tonight that I pit several of the Alstom Bros 100 point rated IPA's against each other in a taste test. Victory Hop Devil, Dark Horse Crooked Tree, Sculpin IPA, and the Anderson Valley Hop Ottin'. This one is not in the Sculpin category, but I put it right there with Victory and Dark Horse, and definitely better than Hop Ottin'.

It pours a pale, straw golden color and has a great nose. It has a florally, citrus character and is so much better than people think. It is lighter in body than many of the flag waving IPA's and may approach Pale Ale category. If they knew how good this was it would disappear from the shelves. Very good beer. I am hard to please, and having had Zombie Dust and Flower Power I am jaded forever more. But for those that have been around, this is better than most. I rate it higher than Stone and Founders Centennial, on in the same discussion with Hop Devil, Lagunitas and Two Hearted and Sun King Osiris.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - Beautifully clear yellowish-orange with one-finger head. Beer left significant lacing. A really beautiful pour and very clear for an IPA.

S - Holy citrus batman! The heavy citrus notes kick in immediately, with some grapefruit up front. A bit piney on the finish.

T - Very bitter and typical of an overly hopped up IPA. Almost a DIPA in my opinion.

M - A bit grainy and very full / thick on the palate. Leaves the mouth a little dry and craving some more.

Overall - very great beer. Another solid effort from Otto and my friends over at Schlafly. I will be buying more of this as long as it sticks around.

Large bright white head that recedes to a veil with some portions still hanging on to thick foam.
Lacing all over the glass.
Transparent golden color with an orange tinge.

The nose is an excellent balance between candied oranges and sweet bread. The aroma is also quite floral, but I can't identify it.

The taste is somewhat similar to the nose. Primarily the flavor begins as a combination of orange and grapefruit. A little bitterness follows the citrus, but it all finishes cleanly. I do detect some of the bread-like flavor of the malt near the finish. The balance is perfect and everyone plays nicely.

The feel is medium and oily. It coats the mouth evenly with slight bitterness and subtle citrus flavor.

I love this IPA. The nose is very attractive, the flavor is perfectly balanced with mild bitterness and its appearance is nearly perfect. Here's another brew that I can drink everyday.

Schlafly "Tasmanian IPA"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "Bottled with love on 10/06/2014 08:40"
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

I'd argue against the name of this beer as using hops grown in Tasmania hardly makes it a "Tasmanian Style India Pale Ale" but that seems pointless.

The first thing I found interesting about this beer is that it seems unfiltered, and displays a cloudy body dense with suspended particulate. Normally that would be a defect but I'm assuming in this case that it's due to an enormous amount of dry-hopping in the fermentor or bright tank. The thin white head drops readily but it leaves some fairly impressive lacing behind on the glass.

The aroma would certainly indicate dry-hoping as it's bold and bright. Unfortunately I find quite a bit of musty-book and cat piss aroma amidst the citrusy hops. I can't decide if I like it or not, but it smells like a basement and that somehow just doesn't seem right in my mind. I've had beers made with Galaxy hops before but never found them to be so musty/funky smelling.

The flavor smooths things over, eliminating the mustiness, although there is a bit of earthiness to it. It's got a full maltiness that's bready and lightly toasty; full but not sweet. The hops are threaded through well, and you get for the most part one united flavor as opposed to finding malt, then fruitiness, then hops, or whatever. There is what I perceive as yeasty fruitiness, delivering apple and red berries, although that could be coming from the hops as well as there is a distinct peach component to it. The other flavors that I attribute to the hops include citrus pith, pineapple, orange, resin, and perhaps mango and/or papaya. It's solidly bitter, but doesn't step beyond the bounds of what the malt can handle.

Just based on it's uniqueness I'd have to recommend it but I feel it goes well beyond that, delivering a compelling, satisfying IPA that could easily be enjoyed beyond one serving.

A-Clear orange, some carbonation and one finger head.

S-Good deal of hops, citrus, grass, balanced out with caramel and other malts.

T-Great balance. Starts with caramel, grass, citrus, orange. Ends with nice bitterness. Most likely as close to Nugget Nectar as you'll get.

M-Medium bodied, nice carbonation, velvety.

O-A great brew, wonderful balance, how an IPA with a lot of Red Ale malts should be made.

Pours a dark amber with a light foamy head.

Nose is big on the tropical notes.

Flavor is a great balance, a bit of malt to smooth out the bright bitter hop characteristic. Very clean beer, nice finish.
