Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Megahertz on 10-12-2012

Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Sweet fruity spicy hop aroma. Unique and pleasant. Some hops oils but without any excess.
Quite pale and rather cloudy. Very white head, fizzy and settles out with a bit of time.
Interesting and complex hop flavors. Still fruity, a little less spicy and a greater sense of "green" and vegetative (but not unpleasant. Again some hop oil intensity, but not too excess or distaste. Malt is really in the background and there appears to be little to no crystal and it's a flatter duller background, like primarily pale malt and little else. This is a hop show. A little touch of alcohol.
Moderate body and carbonated well.
This is a solid and enjoyable beer. Unique and interesting hop flavor and done very nicely.

Draft service into a goblet at The Flying Saucer in Kansas City.

A: Clear, medium golden color with one finger of diminishing white foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.

S: Hops are featured in the smell, though not as intensely as the flavor might suggest. Mostly floral with pithy grapefruit.

T: Begins dry, with pungent tropical fruit that is over-ripe and funky. Crackery malt follows into the middle, austere in the wake of the early hops assault. Aromatics never fade entirely, tasting alternately green-herbaceous oniony, and awesomely funky. Acidity is moderate the transition, as is bitterness at the end. Slight phenolic taste is revealed as the beer warms in the glass.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, slightly acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: A fine IPA featuring a very modern hops profile. Galaxy hops are not wasted here, although they do not appear as clean as they could be. This beer presents a different experience when bottled, with a much fruitier nose that will require a separate review.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Grey Sail pint glass

Appearance- Hazy orange color with a small white head.

Smell- Strange. Skunk, citrus, tropical fruits, and earthy hops.

Taste- Fruity/citrusy hops. Piney flavors. Very earthy. No alcohol at 7.2

Mouthfeel- Smooth carbonation. Lighter in body.

Overall- Great tasting IPA, but smells really weird to me.

Appearance: Pours a clear goldenrod color with a frothy head that leaves a nice dotty pattern behind

Smell: Lemon, pineapple and grassy tones

Taste: A touch bready, with the hops quickly taking over; the pineapple is slightly rotting, with lemon, passion fruit and a grassy, Germanic tone, as well; there is also a vinous, white wine character, as the finish is dominated by the unusual Antipodean hops

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A surprisingly austere Germanic influence and a vinous element make this a rather unique IPA

A - pours a clear yellow color with a nice head that leaves a nice lacing down the glass

S - nose is juicy, dank and earthy hops with a little bit of spiciness

T - taste starts off with sweet syrupy citrus flavors that are replaced by some of the caramel malt backbone. However, the Tasmanian hop comes back with a juicy grapefruit flavor that wasn't detectable in the nose. These yield slightly to a little bit of earthy spiciness, but some grapefruit bitterness helps round it off.

M - a little watery, but it works well with this beer

D - overall, this is a solid single hop IPA. I really like this hop...it reminds me of Citra, but more spicy and not as juicy. Recommended while it's on the shelf.

Appearance: Pours a golden yellow color…about a finger width, white head formed and lasted…hazy and not overly transparent…livens up nicely when I swirl it around…(4/5)

Smell: Tons of pineapple and grapefruit emanating from the glass as soon as I poured it…light and zesty…orange, tangerine and tropical fruits also very apparent…mildly sweet, there is some grassy and biscuity notes balancing things out…mildly floral, but nothing too powerful, this is a citrus hops dominant IPA…(4/5)

Taste: Orange, pineapple, grapefruit, mango and general tropical fruit tones right away with a noticeable grassiness to it…malts are mildly sweet and biscuity and play a background role…some lemon zest in there as well…a touch of musty yeast lingers after I swallow…fantastic! (4.25/5)

Mouthfeel: Light body, light carbonation…some fluff does form bringing a bit of lemon peel bitterness to the palate…the light body is refreshing and overall, mildly bitter considering it’s an IPA…light lemony/pineapple citrus flavor with a touch of bitterness lingers in the after taste…one of the lightest mouthfeels for an IPA I’ve ever had…(3.75/5)

Overall: This is a good brew and I wish I had more than one…the “T” in T.I.P.A. stands for Tasmanian, signaling this ale was made with 100% Australian hops…I found it while traveling through Kentucky, though it’s made in STL, and picked it up on a mix-a-six rack…this is a quintessential summertime brew with it’s super light, drinkable and refreshing nature…I’m not sure if or when I’ll be seing this again, but I highly recommend picking this up if you see it…this bottle was born in 12/12 and seeing as it’s made with Australian hops, it may be strictly a winter seasonal…even though it’s 3 months old now, I found the flavor to be fresh and zesty and well worth picking up even at this late date…if you see this floating around in your area, pick it up and enjoy…(4/5)

A: Pours a clear gold with a billowing white head that lingers for some time.

S: Aromas of tangerine, navel orange, pineapple, mango, guava, herbs, grass, and biscuit are most pronounced on the nose.

T: Notes of tangerine, navel orange, lime, lemon, pineapple, mango, guava, grass, and herbs are balance by delicate notes of crackers, biscuits, minerals, and caramel. The finish is bitter, fruity, and mildly resinous with tangerine, navel orange, pineapple, and guava flavors giving way to subtle biscuit and caramel.

M: Medium-bodied and somewhat sticky in the mouth. Carbonation is initially a bit prickly, but quickly softens. Alcohol is very well hidden.

O: A nice IPA. This makes me wish more American brewers would experiment with Australasian hop varietals more frequently.

12 oz bottle into 8 oz glass cup (hey, i was in a hotel room)

A: light golden, very bright and clear, active carbonation, offwhite head

S: mango and clementine orange,

T: more citrus in the mouth than the nose but the mango is right there. juicy and a bit of a pear like astringency, so damn fruity, a bit of a sweetness that i swear reminds me of the first 10 (the only good) seconds of double bubble gum.

M: Very chewing and lush, good match for the nose and taste.

O: I love this beer. It's by far the best thing I've had from schlafly's and i wish it wasn't a special release. the S, T and M are perfectly complimentary.

12oz bottled, dated 11/22/2013, received as an extra from BA trader Moyman.

Slightly hazy, straw yellow elixir poured into SA perfect pint glass. Vigorous pour yields a two finger, white head. Thick lacing as the beer is consumed.

Heavy tropical fruits (pineapple, mango), mild spice, earth tones. Sweet malt biscuit.

The Galaxy hops are doing the solo boogie in this brew. Very fruity but not sweet, a guava or passion fruit flavor; the muted hop bitterness lingers on the palate.

Medium body, well carbonated, sooth without any alcohol coming through.

This is a nice brew overall but I prefer my IPAs to be less subtle.

Great schlafly offering overall… Doesn't drink like a triple IPA. A lot of fruit and citrus character here with a nice smooth finish you would not expect from a triple IPA. Good stuff! Will track down again for sure!

Bottle: Poured an orangey color ale with a rather large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of fruity and tropical hoppy notes with some light sweet notes. Taste is also dominated by some nice tropical and fruity notes with some light residual sugar notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Solid use of hops form down –under countries.

L: Bright gold/straw color with a slightly orange core. Lasting, fluffy head and strong lacing. Lots of little suspended particles.
S: Sweet candy / citrus (especially grapefruit). Tangerine
T: Bitter, not as much fruit presence. Strong malt backbone. Grassy herbal hop flavors.
F: Great balance. Not too effervescent, not too thick and oily. Slightly "chewy"
O: Very good beer. Was surprised by the tropical fruit aroma. Not overly bitter or acidic. Easy drinking.

On tap at Downtown Crown Beer and Wine. Medium golden coloring with small foam head. The Galaxy hop is growing on me, the aroma is somewhat pineapple/citrus and develops the slight "oniony" characteristic when it warms. Flavor is grassy and slight citrus, again, somewhat oniony. Definitely a hop bomb, bitterness is on point and is very well-rounded.

Poured into an IPA glass. Golden/light orange hazy color with a generous white head. Pretty good retention and lacing. Nice aroma with grapefruit, orange, cracker and some pine. Taste was typical Galaxy hops - citrus notes as above with (to me) a nice mild smoky spiciness on the back end. Clean dry finish. Would definitely buy this again.

Big thanks go to Kegatron for gifting me with a bottle. I heard nothing but good things about this brew, so I am excited to have a go at it. Bottled roughly 2 weeks ago. 12oz bottle into a tulip shaped pint glass. The brew appears a pale golden yellow with a finger of white froth that fades to a thin film across the top leaving some webby strings of lacework sticking to the glass. Rising bubbles of carbonation maintain that film and a light swirl brings back about a finger to the surface.

The aroma starts off a little leafy, grassy, herbal and slightly vegetative. That green hoppiness quickly gives way to a lovely amount of fruit like tangerines. As the glass is swirled, a bit of sulfur emerges along with some trace mineral quality and biscuit-like graininess. As the brew warms up, it goes back and forth between the leafy quality and fruity tropical aspects. Overall a nice smelling IPA for sure.

The taste starts off just like the aroma leads you to believe; it is bitter and grassy. There is a bit of vegetative aspect blending into herbal components that get progressively fruity, rindy and citrus flavored to bright and zesty. There is a very mild grain presence that is a bit toasty but it is faint in comparison to the hop character. As it warms up, it displays almost a tea-like finish that is minorly astringent but flavorful and not distracting at all.

This is a medium to lighter bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. The alcohol is very well integrated for a 7+ percent brew. This is a very well put together example of an IPA. It displays a super enjoyable depth of character and has quite an ease of overall drinkability. This is worth seeking out. Thank you very much for the gift Heath!

From bottle to Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass...

A. Pours relatively light in color for an IPA. Straw gold with darker hues around the edges. About a half finger of offwhite head that settles to a quarter finger. Lacing is thick and consistent.

S. Some nice tangerine and orange zest blended with a heavy does of grassy, herbal notes. Not the most complex nose for an IPA, but simplicity is not always a bad thing. While it's less lush, dank, floral, and tropical than its maltier cousins, this beer hits the right notes and hints at a crispness and lightness that a lot of IPAs lack.

T. Orange zest, tangerine, grapefruit, a little bit of pinecone, grassiness, herbal notes, some cracker-like malt. Very nice flavors.

M. This is the truly special part of this beer. Balance is really nice, with a significant punch of hoppy flavor, but also some nice, dry yeastiness and biscuit notes from the malt profile. Nothing overwhelms here, and I think it's a special achievement that this has the flavor of an IPA but the lightness of a pilsner. The 7.2% ABV is remarkably well-hidden...I'd say I was drinking a much lower ABV if I didn't know any better. High marks here.

O. A very unique and well-crafted IPA. The Tasmanian hops are certainly interesting, and give this a minerality and dryness that is unique for the style. Even more impressive is the biscuity malt profile which gives this an almost pilsner-like quality. It won't knock your socks off, but it is certainly unique and of high quality. I dug this quite a bit.

slightly hazy light golden color. Dripping with tropical fruity piney hop goodness and just enough bready malt to bring it all together. Very nice IPA!

This is a completely clear, golden brew. The head is white and frothy, tall, and lasting. Fresh hop smell...pine, wood, wine-casks, and a distant malt. Flavorful. Hops, bitterness and great balance. Not much warming for the ABV. The body is full and firm. Nice, clean, and very, very hoppy. Great brew.

Great top beer from great brewer now available in NY-NJ.

A: Pours a clear yellow, bright amber color with a frothy head that leaves a plentiful dotty pattern.

S: Bright like a west coaster. Bright herbal, lemon, pineapple and grassy tones, like a California IPA.

T: Starts a bit bready, English legacy, w hops asserting very ripe pineapple, lemon, passion fruit and a grassy, California trail tone. great finish.

F: Medium body with moderate carbonation, with long drawn finish.

O: Fruity and herbal and big in the California way, but bready, European strain as well - even a Germanic influence. A unique IPA

The head was a thick beauty with a tight knit foam that set to a crust on top. The bodies color was golden and clear with loads of bubbling.

The aromas are creamy, almost a vanilla lacing, with a balance of floral and citrus hops. The scent has a Pina Colada like mixture of pineapple and coconut with some leafy, piney hop aroma. The malt scent has a cardboardish aroma but that is not bad only what I can describe it with.

The flavors are a mixed bag of creamy pineapple, coconut and tropical fruit with an alcohol laced pine, caramelized nut, bran and flower taste. What I find most alluring about this is that as I drink it I keep finding fleeting New tastes that disappear so quickly I can't find the words to describe them.

The feel is easy and crisp but a light astringency seems to pull at the tongue. Otherwise this is quite remarkable.

Pours hazed golden yellow with a thin head that settles and stays. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of citrus - grapefruit and orange/tangerine.

The taste is of juicy grapefruit backed by a cracker-like bread. Bitter bite in the finish. Alcohol is very well-covered.

It has a firm medium body, that could be chewier, but I'm more than satisfied with it.

A juicy, citric, well-hopped IPA!

A: Translucent blonde with a light head and a bit of lacing.

S: Excellent. All hops, mainly citrus.

T: Top notch IPA. Interesting profile. Different citrus and pine combo. Quite sweet with minimal aftertaste.

M: Prickly. Lots of tiny bubbles. Coarse.

O: Love the Galaxy hops in this.

Poured this into a standard pint glass and the brew makes a good two finger thick bright white head, with a cleanly filtered body that is a golden white color. Looks kind of like a Kristalweizen.

The aroma is very citrus in the way of lemonade... Almost smells like a Shandy. There is some pine, but almost smells like Sprite altogether with odd soapy fragrances.

Taste wise it's grainy huskiness with some lemon, and a hint of caramel.

Oddly feels medium in body, which makes this 7.2% a sleeper and can creep on you very stealthily.

This is my favorite beer from the schlafly family to date. Pours a milky light golden hue with heavy frothy head. Notes of light hops and heavy citrus on the nose. The beer is smooth on the palate, balanced with citrus, light hop and some earth. I would have desired a stronger hop bite especially on the finish. A solid keeper
