Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Megahertz on 10-12-2012

Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Clear golden, with a thick white head, leaving a thick film as it dies down. Uniquely good looking, given that the color is exceptionally pale and mundane.

Looking rolling orange rind between your fingers and then breathing it all in. The freshness eminates through the air, up the nose, behind the eyes. Nice, though a little one-dimensional.

Perky, bright, showing flashes of citrussy oiliness, bitterness and a crispness that is unique to this beer. Again though, somewhat singular in its approach.

Very subtley carbonated - nearly resting beneath everything else, waiting for you to notice it, draw it out.

A really enjoyable beer and one that is unique to Schlafly. Well done, St. Louis.

Paid $10.99 for a growler at DEP in Fort. Thomas, KY...

First note is that Schlafly makes some killer special release beers and this one is pretty special. The beer pours a clear golden base with huge white, organic fluffy head, and thick lacing on the glass. Smell great, reminds me of the Victory's Headwaters PA; very bright and floral hops, with a touch of citrus-like sweetness.

The brewer notes pineapple as the fruit element and it is abundant yet very complimentary to the single Tasmanian hop used, it comes off as an extremely bold yet simple flavor. It's extremely light on the mouth and is a perfect session beer.

Final Thought: This was a huge surprise, it's refreshingly simple and oozes of quality, one of the best beers I've had in my ten years of sampling craft beers, well done!

Yellowish in color with a cloudy body, this beer features a nice, frothy head of white foam that holds its own for some time. The nose on this beer is fruity all the way, with scents of pineapple, orange peel, grapefruit, and more emanating from your glass.

As for the taste, this beer seems to be firing on all IPA cylinders in its own unique way. The flavor, like the nose, emphasizes the tastes of different fruits with pineapple and citrus standing out above the rest. There are other tropical fruit flavors to behold but the beer also offers some nice biscuit and toasted malt flavors before returning once again to the flavor of fruity hops.

IPA are often fruity in nature, but this beer is even fruitier than most and both its flavor and appearance are unique for the style. Its flavor is almost like that of a cask- drawn beer and its taste is second to none for any style. I know that they brew this beer with Australian hops and that accounts for much of the interesting flavor. It is the type of beer that could be consumed very quickly and the alcohol could really sneak up on you if you’re not careful.

This is certainly a one-of-a-kind beer and I am glad I took the time to give it a try. It belongs in a class all by itself and I recommend finding it and sampling if you happen to be in the state of Missouri.

This came to me as a 20 oz. draft in a mug. Lucky me and thanks to the bartender for pointing out this new offering.

In the looks department, the IPA is gorgeous crystal clear deep yellow-gold topped with a finger and a half of meringue-like head, reducing slowly to a form lasting cap and exemplary lacing.

The aroma hit me before the glass his the bar, wafting fresh floral and citrus hops and a bit of honey-ish sweetness that was almost tactile in quality.

The flavor was lots of fun and mixed freely with the nose in a potpourri of fruity yeast, malt, and very fresh hops, just ever so delicately piney. Everything about the flavors evoked freshness an to me evoked a garden or orchard like essence.

A medium body and just the right amount of carbonation rounded out this glass fairly perfectly.

Overall very well-balanced in all aspects. I have been impressed with several other Schlafly offerings, and this Tasmanian IPA is the best so far. I will be going back for more of this one.

Acutally the first time I had this beer was on tap at the Shirlington October fest. Since then I have had it from the bottle, poured into the Dogfish Head IPA glass

A - I was surprised how light it is, almost pilsner like, say Yellowihs. Left a nice ring on the glass

S - Lots of grapefruit and floral smells. Almost like an orchid or similar tropical sweet smelling flower

T -Mostly a grapefruit or citrus taste, and other tropical fruits, very little of the piney taste of some IPAs. A little bit sweetness helps to balance out the bitterness. but the bitterness is not lingering, a very pleasant finish. ... Loved the taste, reminded me of some other great 'hop bomb' beers, such as Hopslam!

M - Nice amount of carbonation, refreshing

Overall this is one of my favorite IPA's, I like it as much as Hopslam or Lagunitas Sucks

Pours a hazy golden orange, half finger of white head, nice lacing

Smell is crazy citrus, orange juice, grapefruit, pineapple, tropical notes, fresh cut flowers, tangerine, mangos, guava.... Well you get the idea

Here we go... Taste and I can not wait!, well, citrus and tropical fruit, but no where near the smell. Not that I am not impressed, but bases on the smell I did expect a little more. Orange, Citrus peal, tropical fruit, pine needle, floral notes, grapefruit bitterness in the end... No real notable malt flavor that I can pick up.

Mouthfeel is medium light, heavy carbonation, dry finish

Really nice IPA, if I could get it here I would stock it like mad while in season, If you are looking for citrus/tropical IPA that does it real nicely you can not go wrong here!!!!

Review taken from notes October 2013

12 oz brown bottle with nice simple Schlafly logos and labels. Really nice looking bottling as usual from these guys. Poured into a standard American pint glass.

A - bright glowing yellow golden with a slight hint of orange throughout. White head pours nice and forms a nice ring of lace leaving trails of stick behind.

S - fruity citrus aromas galore of juicy orange and pineapple fruity hop whiffs. A hint of hop spice and light malt toward the back end with more fruit goodness coming in the finishing whiffs of the nose.

T - juicy fruit filled notes nearly gush my palate. Orange, and pineapple with loads of citrusy hops. The malt is on the light side but still finds itself balancing nicely in what's a pretty sturdy bitterness in the finish. Fresh fruity citrus, a big bitterness but still juicy and refreshing flavor.

M - medium bodied and a very good thickness to the mouthfeel. Bitter but exactly the way an ipa should be.

O - Tasmanian ipa is a surprise to me. I'm up and down with Schlafly. While some of their stuff I find awesome I also find some to be lacking an it factor. But in the case of Tasmanian IPA they nailed it. Galaxy hops are some of my favorite while I'm also a firm believer in single hop brews and this brewery knocked this out of the park and in brilliant fashion. I will most definitely be drinking this again!

Wow! What a fun beer to savor in the fall or winter weather. I picked up this sixer from one of my local stores.

The beer pours an off white head, and the body is as pale as a Bud or Coors Original. The head retains well, and a lace remniscent of fine lingerie remains. Carbonation is friendly, but not excessive like a cola.

As for how it feels, it feels like a standard IPA. Folks, you know you're drinking beer.

Taste: Pineapple at the start, with a sharp bite right after. Beechwood follows, and next a hint of pine. At the finish, a floral hop kisses you goodbye.

Overall, this is a grand beer. This changed my mind about the Schlafly brewery once and for all. I've got to explore more my fellow BAs. Time's a wasting! My next haul will have Schlafly!

Had on tap at Magnolia's in Purcellville

A - Clear gold body with a sticky white head that clings to the glass. Moderate carbonation rising from the bottom

S - Very citrusy and a nice break from the pine-forward IPA's I've been having. Canned pineapple with a good bit of grapefruit. Slightly candy sweet in the nose

T&M - Great burst of citrus hops right off the bat that is neither overly bitter nor sweet. I taste more grapefruit than pineapple but both are evident. A little mango aftertaste once swallowed. Very different flavors from most IPA's I've had which I really appreciate. I absolutely HATE grapefruit but evidently I love the taste in my beer. Very smooth mouthfeel with less than moderate carbonation. Goes down very easy. Slightly sweet taste without making the mouthfeel sticky.

O - really enjoyed trying this one. WIll buy a sixer if I see it around. Would like to compare vs having on tap.

Bottled on 11/7/12.

Pours a clear light golden color, with visible carbonation and a fluffy 2-finger off-white head. Nice lacing, too. This is a gorgeous beer.

Smell is big on tropical fruits. Pinapple, mango, some peach, orange and mandarin, a light biscuity malt backbone. Ever so slightly skunky. On tap this was ridiculously pungent - kind of reminded me of Zombie Dust. In bottles, it's a bit less so, though it opens up as it warms.

Taste is a grainy biscuity malt backbone, with some nice hop profile. A lot of the same flavors as the smell, but they're somewhat muted. Finishes with a nice warmth.

Mouthfeel is excellent. Light, well carbonated, tingly. No complaints at all.

This is a solid IPA. It's a fun hop. Let it warm before you drink it, though, and have it on tap if at all possible. This review is for the bottle, but on tap this beer is a whole different beast.

I've had this one a handful of times, once on draft, but mostly bottled. Reviewing based off a bottle poured into a nonic glass.

A: Pours a hazy golden color with over a finger of white foamy head that reduces quickly and leaves a fair amount of lacing.
S: Wafting of citrus, slight pine, and almost a sugar candy. I'm intrigued by this one.
T: Similar to aroma - lots of mango and pineapple, pine to tone down the sweetness. There's a sweetness that I can't place my finger on, but it becomes dominant near the end and follows through the after taste.
M: Carbed well, leaves an ever so slightly dry after taste, but mainly a sweet taste that lingers.
O: Love this beer, it offers a great unique twist to a common style that certainly helps it stand out.

Bottled 10/17/2012, 9 days old!

A: One of the lightest colors I've seen in an IPA. Gold, with generous head. Making me thirsty just looking at it.

S: Freshly cut mango, hops. Oh baby.

T: Tropical fruit explosion, thirst-quenching. Light malt backbone. A little grassy. Outstanding beer.

M: Good carbonation, medium bodied. Creamy. Alcohol is well hidden for 7.2%.

O: This might be the best beer I've had from Schlafly to date, and I've had a lot of them. I think I prefer this one over their AIPA. Really wish this was their summer seasonal rather than winter.

12oz bottled, dated 11/22/2013, received as an extra from BA trader Moyman.

Slightly hazy, straw yellow elixir poured into SA perfect pint glass. Vigorous pour yields a two finger, white head. Thick lacing as the beer is consumed.

Heavy tropical fruits (pineapple, mango), mild spice, earth tones. Sweet malt biscuit.

The Galaxy hops are doing the solo boogie in this brew. Very fruity but not sweet, a guava or passion fruit flavor; the muted hop bitterness lingers on the palate.

Medium body, well carbonated, sooth without any alcohol coming through.

This is a nice brew overall but I prefer my IPAs to be less subtle.

Pours golden orange. Nice 2 inch head. Fantastic hoppy citrusy smell. Loads of orange and tangerine. The taste is incredible. Loads of citrus. Loads of hops. Mouthfeel is full, very carbonated. Overall, this is by far my favorite beer of 2012. I can drink this for breakfast every day. You must buy this beer. If you don't, you will regret it.

Damn good ipa. Pineapple citrus flavors are delicious and balanced out so perfectly by a nice earthy hop finish. My biggest complaint is consistency had the February batch and the pineapple was the main event, and the September batch seems to be much more herbal and grassy. Still awesome amount of drink ability but not at all the same beer.

Color is perhaps the lightest I've ever seen in an IPA. If not for the cloudiness and the head, you might think like is a macro lager! The aroma is kind of funky. Off putting, actually. However, that funkiness isn't in the flavor. There is a fruitiness to it, but not quite like the citrus flavors from most hops. Mellow for an IPA, but I like it. Sneaky ABV at 7.2%

Gotta love the uniqueness. Bonus points just for that!

Hazy golden orange with a thick white head and tons of chunky lacing. Sweet citrus aroma fills the nose, light cracker notes from the malt let the hops just shine. Initial light cracker followed by a blitz of citrus hop flavor that finishes slightly bitter. Taste starts off orange citrus and sweet and finishes grapefruit and bitter. Mouthfeel is light end of medium body with nice carbonation and a dry finish. This is an outstanding IPA with great citrus flavor that I will look forward to every year.

Poured into nonic glass from 12 oz bottle. Pale golden hazy appearance w/pure white 1/2" head which lasted to the last drop. Nice lacing on glass. Very skunky grapefruit/citrus aroma and flavor which is nicely balanced by the malt. Medium body, just the right amount of carbonation. Excellent IPA. Well done St Louis Brewery!

My god, that aroma. Big, bright tropical fruit mingles with prickly pine. Exciting and inviting.

The flavor brings a softer, tamer version of the intensity hinted at in the aroma. Quite tasty and juicy, dry and somewhat bitter. Some dank characteristics emerge as the beer warms, as well as a distinct kiwi flavor. Still doesn't quite live up to the nose, but this is a great representation of a contemporary southern hemisphere IPA.

12oz bottle poured into a Schlafly snifter.

Appearance: This beer pours a mostly clear brightly light golden orange. About one finger sized of white frothy head. Retention holds up nicely. Nice lacing lines throughout the glass.

Aroma: The galaxy hops are bright and citrusy. Tropical fruits like pineapple and mangoes and grapefruit come to mind. Hints of some piney dankness linger in the background.

Taste: Bright fresh juicy citrus and tropical fruit flavors dominate. Apicots, pineapple, grapefruit, mangoes. At 60 IBU's it's not an overpowering or overly bitter flavor but there's not much here as far as malts go. Perhaps just a little for some balance. Finishes dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Carbonation is a little high and prickly but I don't have any complaints. The finish is very dry with some moderate bitterness.and wants to keep bringing you back for more.

Ale pours a medium yellow with a small white head that laces down the pint glass. Bright citrus aroma, taste of citrus, balanced with sweet malt and a slightly dry bitter finish. No alcohol in the flavor which makes this dangerously sessionable. Very delicious and well made.

Schlafly never fails to wow me with their "special release" beers!

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle to a pint glass, pours a clear golden orange with a half finger off white head, keeps a solid lacing throughout.

A fruity, hoppy aroma stands out that'll make any hop head like myself's mouth water in anticipation.

The taste is much of the same, hops up front followed by mango, peach and citrus. Finishes off with a light maltyness that balances well with the hops.
Mouth feel is slightly resiny /oily.

All and all this is an excellent beer that will be my choice session brew while it is available. Anyone that appreciates hops and a well balanced IPA would love it!

Poured from the bottle into a Deschutes pint glass.

Pours a super light, light orange with a small white head. It's almost the same color as the label! Head doesn't last long, but leaves some decent lacing. Surprisingly light colored for an IPA, but it's super tasty looking.

Smell is a puncher. Just wow. Galaxy hops will take the craft brewing world by storm by year's end. Lovely mango, tart, passion fruit and citrus smell. Very sweet, with minimal resiny quality.

Taste follows. Uber punch of the most flavorful hop on the planet, next to cascade. Lots of mango, citrus, melon, apple. Very juicy quality. The contribution the hops make to the othewise light beer are quite wonderful - one of the few beers I've ever had that the hops contributed to the drinkability of a brew. The hops make me want to drink more and more of this.

Overall a very stellar brew.

I'm a fan of Schlafly and visit the Tap Room whenever in St. Louie; couldn't resist this 6'er from TW for $10.99 (after $1 coupon).

A - the yellowest (looks like a Bud) IPA with barely any head. Despite the small amount of foam, beautiful lacing decorated the glass throughout.

S- Great olfactory sensation! Grapefruit, mango, with a relaxed herbal scent.

T - Similar to the smell, but a little tamer in terms of the citrus. I get almost a roasted fruit flavor (e.g. grilled apricot/peaches) followed by the mellowest piney spice. The warmth of the 7.2 ABV% comes through without overwhelming the flavors.

Mouthfeel - medium body and not overly oily.

O - This is another winner from Schlafly. I really enjoyed the complexity that came with each sampling. Careful though, at 7.2 ABV these could go down waaay too easily.
