Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Megahertz on 10-12-2012

Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Bottle shared by Thorpe429, thanks! Beer is yellow with a minor haze, nice white head, medium bubbles, some lacing, moderate carbonation.

Aroma is all galaxy hops, fruity, mango, pineapple, smells amazing.

Beer is medium to light in body, very hoppy, a little sweet, nice beer overall. These new hops are really pushing the boundries and this is one of the better 100% galaxy hop IPAs I've had. I'd definitely have this again. (428 characters)

12 oz bottle into a Hoffman House chalice. Dated 10-08-12 - four days ago!

A - Brilliantly clear deep gold with a large, bright white head that falls into a thick crown.

S - Exotic tropical fruits with a resiny, green background note.

T - Inital soft honey-sweet maltiness quickly transitions into a veritable fruit salad of hop flavors with a firm, but clean bitterness. Kiwi, passionfruit and pineapple. Finish is bone dry with only mild bitterness and subtle remaining fruitiness.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation.

O - One of the finest southern hemisphere IPAs available, and at a bargain price. Buy it by the case. (643 characters)

Bottle poured into a snifter

Mazy, hazy golden . Three fingers of foam that gently settle down with nice lacings on the glass. Lacings hold on as I drink down the glass.

Grapefruit! Wonderful citrus bouquet of fresh squeezed grapefruit. Faint, tiny carbonation.

Smooth , crisp clean taste of citrusy hops. Clean finish with a slight bitterness at the end. Nice , light to medium weight.

I prefer malty beers but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste, smell and appearance of this Tasmanian IPA. A good beer that I would enjoy again. (539 characters)

I must admit that Schlafly has not done a lot to impress me over the years. As a result, I passed by Tasmanian IPA when I saw it at the liquor store. Only when I had it at a brewfest was I impressed, and consequently bought a six pack. From one of those bottles, I write this review.

From the bottle into a pint glass, the beer was a light straw color with a white head. It demonstrated generalized lacing and retention on the sides of the glass. The aroma was a combination of citrus and peach skin. The aroma was not overpowering, but well-balanced. In the initial taste, one detects peach, pine, and a mild resin flavor. The malt backbone is well disguised but there is a generalized sweetness that compensates for a lack of maltiness. In the aftertaste, the peach and citrus continues, but the resin comes to the forefront making this one a little more bitter. The linger of the hop afterbite is a little suprising because the beer runs a little this. Easily, this is the best thing Schlafly makes and probably a top ten single IPA for me. (1,045 characters)

Bottles 10/8/12 poured into Founders Bolt Cutter glass
Thanks to tut2528 for this one

Pour: A light orange-lemon color with 2 fingers of bright white head. The head consisted of small tight white bubbles with good lacing and retention. This beer upon pouring and standing for a few minutes remains cloudy .

Smell: Citrus and tropical are the dominant player in the aroma with orange, tangerine, pineapple and grapefruit. Some grass notes in there too but second to the citrus.

Taste: Quite bitter at first but also the citrus and tropical notes are at the front. Pineapple and grapefruit dominate with some orange playing a supporting role. Lemon is also noted along with some mild maltiness in the form of slight cracker and bread.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with mild carbonation. Actually pretty creamy/oily but with a dry finish to it.

Overall: Though I tend to enjoy the DIPA over IPA style, this is a very enjoyable tropical citrus bomb. Just the right amount of hop bitterness with tropical infusion creates an awesome highly drinkable IPA.

Must also mention that the lacing is something to behold as I drink this beer. (1,132 characters)

Pale gold body, good clarity, steady carbonation streams, topped by four fingers of white micro bubbles of all sizes. Good thorough drippy lace. This could sneak up on the non-craft drinker because it looks like an excellent pour of an America Lager.

Terrific fruity aroma, take your pick, mango, tangerine, grapefruit. It's a cornucopia.

Nice light semi-sweet foundation. Juicy fruit squirting all over the mouth. Mild bitter snap at the swallow. Light fruity finish.

Light medium smooth mouthfeel.

A very good seasonal IPA. Big fan of galaxy hops, and they are used well here. (582 characters)

At first pour this was a cloudy gold rapidly forming inch and a half head of white aromatic foaminess. My first impression was heavily floral and grapefruit like but upon further review its more pineapple and grapefruit. Taste is citrusy with bitters but not as bitter as I would have expected from the aroma. Mouth feel is carbonated but far smoother than I expected. (373 characters)

Schlafly ups their game in the highly competitive IPA market by celebrating the newly available Galaxy hops. With its simplified grain bill, the beer showcases this tropical and citrus-forward hop in all its glory.

Tasmanian IPA opens with a brightly lit orange-amber glow. An even hop haze diffuses the light and gives the beer a very inviting color. Capped with a frothy eggshell white head, the beer retains and laces as steadily as could be expected. This is one handsome looking beer!

Juicy aromas of citrus fruit, coupled with tropical fruits evoke a mouthwatering reation. Full of vibrancy, the supporting malts give a sweeter caramel scent to accompany the impressions of fructose and pleasant acidities.

As the beer starts malty and semi-sweet to taste, the light caramel and honey flavors draw in the hops. Red grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed tangerine, passion fruit, pineapple, mangoes, and apricots are just a few of the hop-induced flavors to be found from these sultry Galaxy hops. Malt sweetness keeps the fruit flavors seeming juicy, vibrant, and sweetly ripened. The balance of the beer tilts heavy toward the hops as the dialogue of malt to hops remain the focus, and without any distraction from outside.

Medium bodied to start, the early carbonated, malty creaminess develops into a dry-malt mid palate before turning moderately resinous and cleanly bitter to finish. Its dry character further keeps the emphasis on hop dominance- just as it should be.

The simplicity of this beer is also its charm. The thin caramel taste of 2-row malt and the stand-up complexities of Galaxy hops carry this beer from sip to finish with ease and boldness. Where brewers are tempted to over engineer the recipe or take shortcuts in technique, its refreshing to see that simplicity and confidence are still fashionable. Thanks Schlafly! (1,849 characters)

I've had this one a handful of times, once on draft, but mostly bottled. Reviewing based off a bottle poured into a nonic glass.

A: Pours a hazy golden color with over a finger of white foamy head that reduces quickly and leaves a fair amount of lacing.
S: Wafting of citrus, slight pine, and almost a sugar candy. I'm intrigued by this one.
T: Similar to aroma - lots of mango and pineapple, pine to tone down the sweetness. There's a sweetness that I can't place my finger on, but it becomes dominant near the end and follows through the after taste.
M: Carbed well, leaves an ever so slightly dry after taste, but mainly a sweet taste that lingers.
O: Love this beer, it offers a great unique twist to a common style that certainly helps it stand out. (760 characters)

A medium golden color. Light head retention.

S very floral. Hint of oak or leather. Fruity. Lightly Piney. Hops are amazing.

T delicious. Refreshing. Dont want to put the glass down. I could slam these repeatedly. I would like to have this in the early spring as well.

M not heavy at all. Refreshing. Crisp yet refined. Not a palate killer.

O for $12 a six pack i would buy it again. This would be a great beer to have around a fire when you get in from the slopes. I woild pair it with some good mexican food or indian or meditwrranean food. Delicious is all i can say. The hops are nice. (596 characters)

Thanks to shebby for the bottle. Excited to try this one. Tasted 24 January 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours quite pale for an IPA (though that's funny to say). Pale golden yellow , very clear. Half-finger of white head, good retention, and really impressive lacing. Little dots of carbonation drifting up through the glass.

I love the way this beer smells. It's full of luscious tropical fruits, pineapple, grapefruit, and a soft dose of pine. Amazing hop aromas, juicy, inviting, and complex. Amazing.

Taste is top-notch as well. Thin malt base, a bit grainy but mostly absent. There's an impressive amount of hops in the flavor. The flavor gets sucked out before surging back with a dry citrusy bitterness. Really nice.

Mouthfeel is fine. A little on the watery side. Medium-light body, moderately low carbonation. Could use a bit more carbonation, too. There's a dryness, but I find that more as a crispy flavor, rather than in the feel.

This is a really impressive IPA. Amazing smells, full of delicious tropical fruits. I dig this, and I plan to pick up more of it before I leave the land of Schlafly. (1,112 characters)

A: This poured a clear light gold with a bit of white head.
S: It smelled like bold fresh apricot and bitter grapefruit and dank herbal hops, with a little sweet honey malt.
T: It tasted like bitter grapefruit and unripe apricot, with some sweet honey and dank herbal hops. It had a clean bitter aftertaste.
M: It was watery with moderate carbonation. Decent body.
D: This was a top tier IPA. Great clean scent and taste like a liquid hop. The body was ok and the finish was really smooth, so it was quite easy to drink. Yum. (525 characters)

Bottled with love on 12 11 12, aww yeahh.
Served in a mini mug, it pours a bright pale gold with a creamy foam dome that rises above the rim and sits for a few minutes before settling. Good retention, and sheets of soapy lace after a couple sips. Lasting head retention.

Big citrus aroma initially, grapefruit and a little tangerine, slightly dank. After a few minutes in the glass it seems more subdued.

Orange pith, brief nectarine sweetness, balanced citrus oil bitterness and lightly bready pale malt underneath. Dry green hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Super drinkable, almost a cousin to Zombie Dust. Impressed by this beer, Schlafly should rotate this in with their American IPA... (693 characters)

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours a really nice clear gold color with about a finger of soapy white head, medium lacing around the side.
S - Lots of pine and citrus, then you get some pineapple with some mild pale malt and a hint of rye, and slightly grassy.
T - Big fruit flavors, tangerine, orange, a touch of white grape, some pineapple, a really mild pale malt to bring it all together, some pine bitterness on the end.
M - Very dry, but still crisp and not overpowering.
O - Outstaing IPA, glad I could finally have this after hearing so much about it. The taste on this has a ton of flavor, and to think its single hopped with galaxy makes it that much better. (666 characters)

Served into a pint glass at Lures

A-Bright yellow with a thin white head.

S-Big aroma of citrus and pineapple - the best part of this beer. Can't put my finger on the galaxy hop smell.

T- Taste is hoppy with a light bitterness that lingers through the finish like grapefruit. Some sweetness of the pineapple but mostly gently bitter.

M-Medium carbonation and mouthfeel.

O-overall great IPA by schlafly, must get six pack (425 characters)

A-pours a clear, goldish type color with a two finger head and plenty of lacing

S-heavy citrus including lemon/lime, pineapple, maybe tangerine..not so much grapefruit smell, it has more of a sweeter citrus aroma

T-strong hop bite that doesn't linger too aggressively; traditional citrus peel with some grapefruit type flavors in the taste

M-not too thin, enough carbonation; fairly dry but not overly harsh aftertaste

O-a really solid IPA that delivers more on the aroma than the taste; it uses light malts to really highlight the hop aroma, but I wish there was a bit more pop in the taste (595 characters)

*12 oz. bottle* Look: Sunset orange body, 1 finger white head.

Smell: Very citrus (Oranges, lemon peel), toasted cracker sweetness, bit of mango and a touch of tropical flowers.

Taste: Mango, oranges, grapefruit, flowers, earthy leafiness, papaya, very solid malt backbone, semi dry mild bitter finish.

Feel: Medium smooth body, mediocre carbonation.

Overall: This is solid and also very tasty. I’m glad I tried this ale. This is balanced and enough hop flavor that it lands on what could be DIPA status. The bitter factor isn’t offensive. If you like exotic fruits/flower flavors in your beer, this is a go to. This beer is recommended.

A: The beer is hazy yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down, but left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderately strong aromas of pineapples are present in the nose along with notes of other tropical fruits.
T: Following the smell, the taste has tropical flavors of pineapples and mangos along with hints of orange citrus and a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The Australian Galaxy hops used in this beer make it very unique, particular from the pineapple aromas and flavors that they impart. I really enjoyed this beer and it was also quite drinkable. (821 characters)

Pours a hazy yellow with a strong orange tinge. Little lacing which dissipates quickly. Prevelant lacing for the lack of head.

Scent is tangerines, grass and gasoline.

Flavor is much the same. Yet it works more. Hops are just prevalent enough.

Mouthfeel is almost perfect. Just enough sweetness. The mouthfeel really makes this.

I dont know why these hops always taste llikegas to me. Luckily I'm getting used to it, as I like this one. Very balanced. (455 characters)

S: Wow what a pleasant smell. Pineapple, mango, papaya... just full of all kinds of tropical fruits. Backed by hints of earth, herbs and malts.
T: Tropical fruit but this adds a lot more malt up front to go with it. These continue through to the finish but add some herbal notes
M: Medium-bodied, fairly smooth
O: I like what the Galaxy hops add, and would really enjoy seeing them mingled with some that add citrus notes. Really enjoyable to drink (578 characters)

12oz bottled Dec 13 2012. Served at around 40-45F.

Pours semi-hazy yellow/gold with a one finger white head that leaves lots of spots of lacing and maintains a very good cap.

Aroma is nice lemon citrus, pineapple, somewhat grassy and floral, biscuit, doughy malt. Very good strength.

Flavor is lemon citrus, pineapple, grassy, floral hops, grapefruit rind, tropical fruit, malt is light and unobtrusive, cracker, bread, biscuit. Minimal sweetness, very good bitterness, some alcohol on the finish. Very dry.

Mouthfeel is light/medium bodied, good carbonation.

Wow, this is some awesome stuff! Very hoppy, unbalanced, just the way I like it. Love pineapple in my IPAs and this delivers. Reminds me a bit of a baby Founders Double Trouble. (742 characters)

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a fairly hazy light straw yellow with a one finger white head. Ok lacing and head retention and really the overall appearance isn't all that impressive.

The aroma on this really blows me away! i love the tropical fruit nose this one puts out. Tons of pinapple and mango but there are also some really nice Earthy undertones. A touch of dankness in there even.

The flavor just continues the tropical fruit explosion. More pineapple and mango along with that tea-like earthiness that is present in the aroma. Bitterness is on the medium to high side along with a slightly chalky mouthfeel. More stickyness in the finish than I was anticipating but it works.

Overall, a very tasty IPA. I love the Galaxy hop and it is showcased beautifully here. A really nice, unique, IPA that is worth picking up. (836 characters)
