Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Megahertz on 10-12-2012

Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Appearance: pours a straw golden pilsener color with a.quick fading head. Good lacing.

Nose: galaxy is supposedly new Zealand grown Citra and it smells like it. Tropical citrus with a mild grassy undertone. Hops are the star.

Taste: really, really good. Light, pale malt. Hops steal the show. Slightly sweet. Very tropical and citrusy with that same slight grassiness. Bitterness is present but relatively low. Obviously big on the late hop additions and dry hop.

Feel: well-carbed. Light to medium body.

Overall: delicious. Great showcase for a great hop. The hops are the star and they really perform. (608 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a goblet. Bottled 9/26/13, les than a month old.

Pours a superb slightly hazy golden body with a generous thick white head. Carbonation is slow and consistent. Head slowly dissipates to a covering by the ned of the drink. Lacing is fine and widespread.

Smell...aah, I know I'm going to enjoy this. Nose is initially predominantly Mango, but then citrus pokes through, mostly grapefruit.

Taste. Just outstanding. Kinda the opposite of the nose. Bitter hops and a strong grapefruit taste with a wash of the sweeter mango coming through. How'd they do that? Gotta seek out other beers with Tasmanian hops.

Mouth was a good medium, all kinds of sharpness exploding in the mouth.

Just an outstanding beer across the board. Hoping they distribute to PA at some point. (M-I-L lives a few miles from Maryland border.) First time I can recall buying a sixer of a beer I've never tried, and actually wishing I'd pulled the trigger on a case. Grab some, you won't be disappointed. (1,001 characters)

This year's (2014) TIPA tastes like Thai basil... seems different from last years'. Still, pretty good. It's interesting to taste this against the new Flying Dog's Single Hop Imperial IPA (Galaxy), also with Australian hops. (225 characters)

This came to me as a 20 oz. draft in a mug. Lucky me and thanks to the bartender for pointing out this new offering.

In the looks department, the IPA is gorgeous crystal clear deep yellow-gold topped with a finger and a half of meringue-like head, reducing slowly to a form lasting cap and exemplary lacing.

The aroma hit me before the glass his the bar, wafting fresh floral and citrus hops and a bit of honey-ish sweetness that was almost tactile in quality.

The flavor was lots of fun and mixed freely with the nose in a potpourri of fruity yeast, malt, and very fresh hops, just ever so delicately piney. Everything about the flavors evoked freshness an to me evoked a garden or orchard like essence.

A medium body and just the right amount of carbonation rounded out this glass fairly perfectly.

Overall very well-balanced in all aspects. I have been impressed with several other Schlafly offerings, and this Tasmanian IPA is the best so far. I will be going back for more of this one. (997 characters)

Enjoyed at the brewpub in St Louis, reviews from notes.

A: 1.5 finger head with excellent lacing on a clear dull golden body.

S: many citrus notes present including tangerine peach pineapple and orange peel. Nice strong, full nose

T: hops are broad with herbal earthy and citrus notes. Nice malt, more of a pale malt, presence and mild bitterness.

M: creamy body and moderate carbonation

Overall: complex hop character. Best beer of the ones I tried. (455 characters)

finally, at long last...get to try this beer. picked up locally, bottled 1/9 so just over a month old. enjoyed from a schlafly flute.

a - brew pours a transparent straw yellow with a typical big foamy white bubbly yet somewhat creamy head. really nice streaky lacing as the head dissolved and attractive champagne like carbonation danced to the surface at a steady pace the duration of sipping the beer.

s - wow...i mean WOW. i've said fresh fruit before, but i almost feel like someone is switching a freshly ripped open perfectly ripe tangerine in front of my nose every time i take a sniff. this is far and away the most fruity and tropical smelling beer to hit my olfactory.

t - as the nose suggests, very tangerine and fresh fruit forward, but not as intense as the nose, but the smell is so in your face that you can't avoid sniffing it on every sip which really intensifies that odor.

m - super easy drinker, no bitterness at all. the hops here are for fruitiness.

o - overall, where has this been my whole life. schlafly was never really on my radar, but after a few huge winners from this brewery i need to explore more. this beer is a revalation and will be something i enjoy every time a new batch comes out, this is a MUST try for any ipa fan. you will not be disappointed. (1,290 characters)

Multiple 12oz bottles, bottle date 10/08/12, poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint

where do we start, i first had this years batch of awesomeness on tap at Country Boy Brewing for the Schlafly Event that also had the Black IPA(which was stellar too). The look of this beer is nice golden color, quite a few shades lighter than your standard IPA but in this SMaSH style beer it works perfectly for later on when you have a sip. The golden beer is topped off with a nice two finger high thick froth of head. After seeing such a clear beer, you tend to lean in for a smell and boy what a beautiful aroma from the wonderful Australian hop known as Galaxy. This beer emits aromas of grapefruit, citrus and some wild flower. The similarities it shares with a hop like Citra are as evident as the differences. The tastes that accompany the aromas are very similar except for a bit of the sweet from the 2 row malt. The bite from the hops is a very smooth bite with no rough edges. There is an apricot to almost grapefruit flavor left after the final sip that is all Galaxy, highlighting again why this beer is so good. The simplicity of it all worked better than most would have expected. The mouthfeel is spot on, not too much carbonation to increase the bitter but definitely enough to hold to style. The medium body is perfect for this as to not draw anything away from the hops. Overall, this beer is great and available and affordable. This is not a super rare beer or over hyped but it can stand up to a lot of overhyped IPA's out there. Thanks Schlafly for a great follow up to American IPA this year. (1,601 characters)

poured 12oz bottle into a snifter. Bottled on 11/14/13.

A - A bright and slightly hazy yellow tangerine liquid with a white 2 finger head. Fades into a collar and leaves behind generous amounts of webbed lacing.

S - So the aroma is near perfect to me. Tons of tropical goodness, pineapple, mango, tangerine, and even some apricot. The malt is a light honey suckle or clover sweetness that works in harmony with the hops.

T - What a mouthful of flavor this IPA packs. Again it is big on the tropical fruit, pineapple, mango, and tangerine. There is a nice bitterness, but it is not grapefruit. There is just enough sweetness to keep the hops from completely dominating.

M - Light body with moderate carbonation. Has a nice slick feel.

O - Schlafly has a real winner on their hands that can hang with all the big Citra IPAs. This was really well done and excellent to quaff. Harold, thank you for sending this! (917 characters)

Paid $10.99 for a growler at DEP in Fort. Thomas, KY...

First note is that Schlafly makes some killer special release beers and this one is pretty special. The beer pours a clear golden base with huge white, organic fluffy head, and thick lacing on the glass. Smell great, reminds me of the Victory's Headwaters PA; very bright and floral hops, with a touch of citrus-like sweetness.

The brewer notes pineapple as the fruit element and it is abundant yet very complimentary to the single Tasmanian hop used, it comes off as an extremely bold yet simple flavor. It's extremely light on the mouth and is a perfect session beer.

Final Thought: This was a huge surprise, it's refreshingly simple and oozes of quality, one of the best beers I've had in my ten years of sampling craft beers, well done! (800 characters)

A: Golden pour with a bit of an orange tinge. Finger's-worth of soapy, off-white, quickly-dissipating head.

S: Beautiful. Extremely citrus and fruity: Pineapple, mango, apricot

T: Bright and strong carbonation. Fairly malty, followed by a wonderful, juicy burst of pineapple and mango, ending with slightly bitter apricot and a touch of hop bitterness to dry it up. Much more fruit than bitterness.

M: Prominent carbonation and a smooth, malty backbone. Sticky fruit.

O: Easily one of my favorites of the style, although it leans a bit more toward the malty/fruity side. Incredible blast of fruit. Long live the Galaxy! This is one of the best things about coming back to the Midwest. (691 characters)

“Bottled with love” on 10/23/13. Purchased $12.99/sixer. Poured into a pint glass.

Well balanced for an IPA. Appearance is holding this beer back from greatness. 4.5

A – Pours a clear pale yellow, almost BMC-like color with a one-finger rocky white that dissipates to a thin layer. Good lacing. 3.25

S – A beautiful aroma, flora, almost perfume like. 5

T – Good bitterness up front with a slight sweetness in the finish. 4.5

MF – There is a smoothness to this beer, but it is also quite refreshing with a bit of sharpness. Medium bodied. Medium-dry finish. 4.5 (577 characters)

A- At first pour the color is faint yellow, somewhat relective of an American adjunct lager, however, a much nicer white foamy head. Don't let this fool you as the next steps improve dramatically.

S- Wonderful citrus hop aroma, and sweet malty undertones.

T- This is where the surprise just jumps at you. The citrus notes of the Australian hops melds exceptionally well with the light sweet malt. I'm so confused by the light color of the brew that I go back for another taste of the TIPA explosion of joy - nicely done Schlafly brewmasters!

M- The mouthfeel is medium to well rounded with a hint of warmth from the alcohol. Did I mention there is 7.2% by volume hidden within this flavor profile....near perfection.

O- I still can't get paste the color of the malt and the enjoyment of what I just finished. And this brew is part of a new Schlafly rotational IPA series. I only have 5 of these babies left, great job St. Louis brewery! (940 characters)

As light an IPA as I can recall. This beer almost looks like a pils! Great carbonation and head formation. Thick lacing is left as it diminishes in the glass.

And wow! The aroma hits me while I’m pouring it. Definitely the most exciting new hop aroma I’ve come across in a long time. I’ve had beers with Galaxy hops before, but none have been this amped up. Huge fruity/citrus notes, as well as an odd almost sulfur-like smell, but it’s not off-putting, just different and hard to grasp. Great smell to this.

The aroma just gets me excited to drink this, and the flavor thankfully does not let me down. As I understand it, this beer is comprised one type of hop and one type of malt. If so, simplicity really works here. Very drinkable, yet this beer is all about showcasing this interesting hop cultivar. I get a lot of mango fruit flavor, but then the finish has this really odd sensation, where it’s not just bitter, but it’s almost a stinging and drying sensation. The only other time I’ve experienced that was with Zombie Dust, but that is a Citra hop beer. Malt is definitely second fiddle, but the light touch of honey sweetness provides a good, but small counterpoint. Body/mouthfeel are spot-on—no complaints there.

Schlafly Tasmanian IPA is one of those rare beers that really makes me sit up and pay attention and is what the American craft beer scene is all about. It’s a new and exciting take on an IPA. And by far the best beer I’ve ever had by Schlafly. It’s only mid-January, but I have a feeling I may consider this one of my top 5 beers of 2013. (1,588 characters)

The appearance is a beautifully clear golden hue; could probably trick some bud drinkers into trying this on appearance alone. Aroma is amazing, tropical fruits, citrus and a slightly oniony/grassy smell. Tastes like it smells, pretty much no malt present and this is all hops. Bitterness is as expected, but not overdone. Mouthfeel is pretty standard. Overall one of the better IPA's i've tried. It's amazing what IPAs come from the midwest these days; really only a handful of IPA's on the west coast that are in the same league as this beer.

I would compare this to Stone's enjoy by or toppling goliath zeelander, but this is way better than both (no competition with either in my opinion). (694 characters)

Poured into a DFH IPA glass. Clear gold with a beautiful white head. Not the first time I've had this and each time I pour, I'm very impressed with the appearance and the gorgeous nose. Tons of tropical fruit notes waft in a very seductive way.

Really tasty pineapple and mango hop notes; Galaxy hops are a wonderful thing. Clean bitterness on the finish. Medium-bodied and nothing too complicated by the way of malt bill. Likely a simple two row pale malt; so light I don't think there is much else to it! I declare this is a likely a SMaSH beer and a mighty fine one at that. Something to be said about one malt, one hop.

Sexy-ass IPA, all the way. Delicious and good for the soul. (687 characters)

12 Oz bottle poured into a tulip
Bottled 11-14-12 (6 days young)

A- This beer pours a clear golden straw yellow with a two finger white head.

S- A massive nose on this beer. It starts off sugary sweet and the hop profile just takes over. A ton of orange and lemon and pineapple. One of the most citrusy smelling beers out there.

T- Sugary sweetness up front. The mats comethrough as a light caramel and very breaddy. The malts perfectly balance the hop bitterness and really help add another element to the beer as well as compliment the hop profile. The hops are crazy in this beer. There is an absolutely massive amount of citrus. This beer tastes like a tropical fruit buffet. The hops are also very floral and a remind you your not drinking a fruit beer.

M- This is a perfectly balanced beer. Sweetness and bitterness balance out to a clean finish and a hoppy aftertaste. Drinkable but still sizable for 7.2%

O- Absolutely awesome IPA. It definitantly helps out that my bottle is extremely fresh. This beer has a different and refreshing hop flavor and is perfectly balanced by the malts. Check it out if you can get it. (1,130 characters)

A - A very light orange, yellowish color, pretty clear, with a small head that produces minor lacing.

S - I really love the fruit smell coming off this one, with a slight hint of other hop notes, such as pine and grass.

T - A subtle grapefruit flavor is out front, with mango and pineapple forming a central base, and some lemon and zest for good measure. Some sweetness balancing off the bitter notes. Delicious.

M - Clean and crisp, with very little drying.

O - A great beer experience, and one I'd sign up for again. No sign of the alcohol when drinking this one, and it is very drinkable, so be sure to pace yourself. If you like your IPA to have strong fruit without being a bomb, this is an excellent example. (719 characters)

Pours very yellow with a foamy white head. Kind of plain looking. The smell is a very fresh hoppy citrus nose. Very impressed with the smell. The taste is good but afraid not very memorable. It does have a very smooth feel and a fairly clean finish but the hoppy citrus taste fall just a bit short for me to be a top notch beer. A sweeter IPA with tangerine nose and flavor. Outstanding. Had so much of it, I'm starting to burn out on it. It's a litte sweet. Light slightly cloudy. Excellent on tap and almost as good in the bottle. 95 is an accurate rating. Has a thick head for a lighter colored beer. Very drinkable. Not as shandy as the Founders All Day IPA, which has more of a grapefruit flavor. Clearly one of my favorite beers. (406 characters)

Poured into a pint glass from a 12oz bottle.

Pours a very clear and pale golden yellow with some mild copper hues. There is a nice 1.25 inch head that is white and very dense. There are some medium to smaller sized bubbles intermingled with the real dense foam. Retention is excellent. The head last forever and recedes very slowly while leaving some lacing.

Aroma to this brew is perfection. Citrusy notes with some tangerine, orange peel and slight grapefruit notes. Those citrus notes are well complimented by some nice tropical fruit notes. There are peach notes and some papaya as well as mango. Nose is awesome.

The flavor follows nose and is very nearly perfect. Tropical notes start things off with some nice papaya and peach. There is also some good citrusy notes that aren't too intense but perfectly balanced with some slight crystal malt sweetness. Some bready notes are present as well as some grassy and slightly piney notes. Mouthfeel is perfect. SMooth and crisp at the same time. Very clean with a nice slightly piney and dry finish.

A true winner by Schlafly. One of their best efforts to date. Great balance of hop and malts and great shinning hop presence. A hop lovers dream with a hidden 7.2% kick. (1,224 characters)

A - Pours a deep gold with a decent white head. Decent lacings.

S - Tons of fruit, namely apricot, mango, and pineapple. Under it all, a touch of pine and herbs. The smallest amount of biscuity malt.

T - More tropical fruit, but with a stronger malt back bone. The hops go through all the way leaving a nice bitter finish, but not overly so.

M - medium body, moderate carbonation. Nice and crisp.

O - I love this beer. The Galaxy hops bring a lovely tropical and citrus flavor to one of my favorite styles. I wish I could find it on the east coast. (553 characters)

Acutally the first time I had this beer was on tap at the Shirlington October fest. Since then I have had it from the bottle, poured into the Dogfish Head IPA glass

A - I was surprised how light it is, almost pilsner like, say Yellowihs. Left a nice ring on the glass

S - Lots of grapefruit and floral smells. Almost like an orchid or similar tropical sweet smelling flower

T -Mostly a grapefruit or citrus taste, and other tropical fruits, very little of the piney taste of some IPAs. A little bit sweetness helps to balance out the bitterness. but the bitterness is not lingering, a very pleasant finish. ... Loved the taste, reminded me of some other great 'hop bomb' beers, such as Hopslam!

M - Nice amount of carbonation, refreshing

Overall this is one of my favorite IPA's, I like it as much as Hopslam or Lagunitas Sucks (833 characters)
