Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

I’m not sure what an IPA made purely with Australian hops is like, since I’m not too familiar with the different strains down under, but I trust Schlafly. Cheers.

Brewed two months before the date of this tasting (“Bottled with love on 10 03 2012”).

A: Oddly pale yellow with a chill haze; as I first pour it, it’s reminiscent of a hefeweizen, especially after a bright, sudsy white head forms. Not your typical IPA presentation, but it’s nice. Sandy retention and stringy lacing encircle the glass.

S: Bright citrus: peach, mango, and pear over a sweet malt bed of banana and vanilla pudding. Not unusually strong, in any sense, but aromatically inviting enough to please. Mild pine resins appear as the beer starts to warm, as does a soft nuttiness.

T: Just what I enjoyed with Schlafly’s American IPA: taut and flavorful hops encased in a layer of chewy, bready malts. The citrus from the hops is so juicy you can nearly taste the flesh of the fruit: sweet mango and orange slices gush as resinous pine holds it all up from underneath, creating a sustained, flavorful hoppiness. I know it looks like a hefe, but now it’s starting to taste like one, too, with all these sweet fruit flavors – even from the grains, which come off like soft wheat and honey oat. At its very soul, this beer is about sweet, simple flavors, and it pretty much nails it. Moderately dry, crisp finish of grassy bitters.

M: As thick as you need it to be, really; there’s a viscosity to it that fits the bill right between a big DIPA and your typical thin pale, and that’s precisely what you want here. Has a slickness that makes it go down like something you’d get on-tap in the U.K. (or Australia, I presume).

O: TIPA, AIPA, XIPA, ZIPA…whatever you got, Schlafly, keep ‘em coming. These beers rock. I can definitely see myself killing a six-pack of this with ease, but most importantly, with pleasure.

12 oz bottle, bottled on 11/26/12, poured into a nonic pint glass.

A- Pours a clear golden color, topped with a finger of white head, leaves some spotty lacing.

S- Big citrusy aroma, lots of grapefruit and orange, as well as tropical fruit notes of pineapple and unripe mango. Also some white pepper and a little bit of caramel malt. It smells pretty damn awesome.

T- Follows the nose with a ton of juicy, vibrant tropical fruit and citrus. Caramel malt provides a nice sweet base, with hints of honey, but doesn't nearly stand up to the hops. White pepper is also noticeable, while alcohol is pretty nonexistent.

M- Medium-bodied, smooth and dry feel.

O- A delicious IPA that serves as a really nice showcase for Galaxy hops (probably the best I've had since Half Acre's Galactic Double Daisy Cutter), the fruit aspect is really awesome and it's also a highly drinkable beer and perfect to pick up as a six-pack. As I've been working my way through the six-pack this week it's actually grown on me more, I'm gonna pick this up again as soon as possible. Definitely give this a shot.

12oz bottle poured into tulip - thanks to hooliganlife

Pours a lightly hazed dark golden color with some auburn hues. Thinner crop of white head bubbles up and fades into a layer of film with plenty of spotty and patchy lacing around the glass.

Wonderful citrus and tropical hop aromas with pineapple, mango, grapefruit and tangerine. Lightly sweet with bread crust and touches of caramel and honey. Soft warm glow as well.

Stark hop bitterness right off the bat, driven by pithy, juicy grapefruit and citrus. Edges of pine and resin followed by some smoother tropical fruit sweetness. Caramel and honey throughout the malty backbone, which peeks through just long enough to separate the aggressive, yet pleasant hop profile. Finishes bitter and juicy with a light warmth.

Medium body, slightly higher carbonation, sticky and dry on the tongue with a lingering finish. Schlafly has surprised me with their beers on more than one occasion, and I'm happy to say this is another huge winner. As soon as I opened the bottle I could already smell the sweet, pungent hop aroma and couldn't wait to taste it.

12 oz bottle into 8 oz glass cup (hey, i was in a hotel room)

A: light golden, very bright and clear, active carbonation, offwhite head

S: mango and clementine orange,

T: more citrus in the mouth than the nose but the mango is right there. juicy and a bit of a pear like astringency, so damn fruity, a bit of a sweetness that i swear reminds me of the first 10 (the only good) seconds of double bubble gum.

M: Very chewing and lush, good match for the nose and taste.

O: I love this beer. It's by far the best thing I've had from schlafly's and i wish it wasn't a special release. the S, T and M are perfectly complimentary.

Bottle dated 11/7/12. Almost 4 weeks old.

A: Pours a clear golden amber. Big fluffy white head. Fades slowly, leaving nice islands of foam behind. Lots of fluffy lacework to boot. Great head retention.

S: Loads of tropical fruit. Pineapple for sure. Mango and grapefruit? Awesome aroma, so strong, fresh and crisp. Like biting into a fresh pineapple.

T: More tropical fruit. Pineapple is prominent with some mango and maybe....tangerine? Grapefruit follows with a little bit of bitterness. Some caramel malt sweetens it up nicely. Nay, perfectly. Lingering grapefruit and a bit of hop resin in the finish and aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied, smooth.

O: Well, this one knocked my pants off. This one is a sweet tropical fruit bomb. Not overly bitter (but still perfectly bitter), it is balanced very nicely in fact - making it super drinkable. Great beer, so glad I had the opportunity to try it.

Heard great things about this beer so I searched till I finally found a store in Nashville that had a 6 pack.

Appearance: Pours a nice yellowish with tints of orange with a finger of a white head. It's definitely filtered and you can see through it. It's pretty clear.

Smell: Smells wonderful. Sweet hops, tropical fruits, citrus, orange.

Taste - Taste is amazing. Sweet upfront mixed with a slight bitterness, then tropical fruits and a bready/malty taste at the end.

Mouthfeel: Mouthfeel is light to medium. Super drinkable. Would never know this was 7%.

Overall: One of my favorite IPAs ever. So good. I'm always looking for beers similar to Lagunitas Sucks and this isn't as good but along the same lines. Very tropical fruit-y, which I love.

12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a CRYSTAL clear gold, with several fingers of foamy bright-white colored head. This retains with at first a big creamy dollop in the middle of the glass and then finally a thick finger or so of robust froth which coats the sides of the glass with rich sticky lacing. The aroma is equal part floral and herbal in the nose with added notes of grapefruit, lemon, pine and then bright tropical fruit tones of mango and pineapple. A light bready feel hangs along the back. This is fresh and vibrant in the nostrils, with that fruit character in particular really being a stand out.

The taste is juicy grapefruit bitterness that gives off a robust bright feel in the mouth, surrounded on the edges by herbal textures and more sweet tropical fruit character. Malts are fairly neutral here but their sweetness does seem to help draw more of that fruit flavor out from the hops. The finish is dry and resinous with some lingering bitter pith. It’s a bit assertive but not overly so. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a soft oily crispness to the carbonation that really flows smoothly in the mouth. You don’t get much of a sense of that 7% ABV here at all.

Wow. This is just a tremendous showcase for Galaxy hops and easily surpasses their previous (and excellent as well) bottled American IPA from earlier this year. This has to be one of the best bottled IPAs on the market right now that’s seeing a decent distribution. Grab it if you find it!

Bottle shared by Thorpe429, thanks! Beer is yellow with a minor haze, nice white head, medium bubbles, some lacing, moderate carbonation.

Aroma is all galaxy hops, fruity, mango, pineapple, smells amazing.

Beer is medium to light in body, very hoppy, a little sweet, nice beer overall. These new hops are really pushing the boundries and this is one of the better 100% galaxy hop IPAs I've had. I'd definitely have this again.

A-nice cloudy gold with a nice frothy white head

S-an awesome scent of tropical fruits and fresh hops. Not such a great strength though. Fairly subtle.

T-comes in with a really decent flavor of tropical fruits and hops. Really it's like a hoppy fruit punch. It's a good mix of the two, though I'd like to see a stronger hops presence. It's really not bitter too much either, only a little bit in the after-taste. It's a fun tasting beer though.

M-dry medium carbonation with a dry finish

O-it's a good IPA. A lot of focus on the fruitiness which isn't a terrible turn from the norm. Even still, I'd prefer a bit more bitterness and hoppiness. An easy drinker for sure. Go out and try some!

Enjoyed at the brewpub in St Louis, reviews from notes.

A: 1.5 finger head with excellent lacing on a clear dull golden body.

S: many citrus notes present including tangerine peach pineapple and orange peel. Nice strong, full nose

T: hops are broad with herbal earthy and citrus notes. Nice malt, more of a pale malt, presence and mild bitterness.

M: creamy body and moderate carbonation

Overall: complex hop character. Best beer of the ones I tried.

This came to me as a 20 oz. draft in a mug. Lucky me and thanks to the bartender for pointing out this new offering.

In the looks department, the IPA is gorgeous crystal clear deep yellow-gold topped with a finger and a half of meringue-like head, reducing slowly to a form lasting cap and exemplary lacing.

The aroma hit me before the glass his the bar, wafting fresh floral and citrus hops and a bit of honey-ish sweetness that was almost tactile in quality.

The flavor was lots of fun and mixed freely with the nose in a potpourri of fruity yeast, malt, and very fresh hops, just ever so delicately piney. Everything about the flavors evoked freshness an to me evoked a garden or orchard like essence.

A medium body and just the right amount of carbonation rounded out this glass fairly perfectly.

Overall very well-balanced in all aspects. I have been impressed with several other Schlafly offerings, and this Tasmanian IPA is the best so far. I will be going back for more of this one.

12 Oz bottle poured into a tulip
Bottled 11-14-12 (6 days young)

A- This beer pours a clear golden straw yellow with a two finger white head.

S- A massive nose on this beer. It starts off sugary sweet and the hop profile just takes over. A ton of orange and lemon and pineapple. One of the most citrusy smelling beers out there.

T- Sugary sweetness up front. The mats comethrough as a light caramel and very breaddy. The malts perfectly balance the hop bitterness and really help add another element to the beer as well as compliment the hop profile. The hops are crazy in this beer. There is an absolutely massive amount of citrus. This beer tastes like a tropical fruit buffet. The hops are also very floral and a remind you your not drinking a fruit beer.

M- This is a perfectly balanced beer. Sweetness and bitterness balance out to a clean finish and a hoppy aftertaste. Drinkable but still sizable for 7.2%

O- Absolutely awesome IPA. It definitantly helps out that my bottle is extremely fresh. This beer has a different and refreshing hop flavor and is perfectly balanced by the malts. Check it out if you can get it.

A- At first pour the color is faint yellow, somewhat relective of an American adjunct lager, however, a much nicer white foamy head. Don't let this fool you as the next steps improve dramatically.

S- Wonderful citrus hop aroma, and sweet malty undertones.

T- This is where the surprise just jumps at you. The citrus notes of the Australian hops melds exceptionally well with the light sweet malt. I'm so confused by the light color of the brew that I go back for another taste of the TIPA explosion of joy - nicely done Schlafly brewmasters!

M- The mouthfeel is medium to well rounded with a hint of warmth from the alcohol. Did I mention there is 7.2% by volume hidden within this flavor profile....near perfection.

O- I still can't get paste the color of the malt and the enjoyment of what I just finished. And this brew is part of a new Schlafly rotational IPA series. I only have 5 of these babies left, great job St. Louis brewery!

Poured from tap into snifter at the bottleworks in stl. Pours a clear golden with a thin head. The look is its biggest downfall. Smell is just amazing. Sweet citrus hops. Pineapple and cotton candy just fill the nose. Wow.

This is one of those rare beers where, as soon as you take the first sip, you start worrying about getting back to the store to buy more before they run out.

Pour was a ruby/orange with a tight head. Hops lose not time getting out of the gate with a warm aroma of citrus fruits. Up front a touch acidic awash with a plethora of citrus-oriented hops notes - grapefruit, tangerine and blood orange. A veritable fruit bowl of hops without any fruity-qualities to the beer itself. Mid-caramel malt shows up toward the middle, never trying to upstage the hops. Finish is lingering with a firm bittering. ETOH lends the barest touch of white pepper at the finish.

Highly hopped, but not for the sake of hopping itself - an excellent example of citrus-centric hops. If you see it, buy it.

Bottled on 11/7/12.

Pours a clear light golden color, with visible carbonation and a fluffy 2-finger off-white head. Nice lacing, too. This is a gorgeous beer.

Smell is big on tropical fruits. Pinapple, mango, some peach, orange and mandarin, a light biscuity malt backbone. Ever so slightly skunky. On tap this was ridiculously pungent - kind of reminded me of Zombie Dust. In bottles, it's a bit less so, though it opens up as it warms.

Taste is a grainy biscuity malt backbone, with some nice hop profile. A lot of the same flavors as the smell, but they're somewhat muted. Finishes with a nice warmth.

Mouthfeel is excellent. Light, well carbonated, tingly. No complaints at all.

This is a solid IPA. It's a fun hop. Let it warm before you drink it, though, and have it on tap if at all possible. This review is for the bottle, but on tap this beer is a whole different beast.

T-Great balance. Starts with caramel, grass, citrus, orange. Ends with nice bitterness. Most likely as close to Nugget Nectar as you'll get.

Pours out a really clear bubbly yellow with 1/2 finger of white suds. Lacing around the glass occurs.
Smell is mango and pineapple with lemon peel and sharp piney hop. No alcohol here but there is a burn at the end of the aroma that is probably hops and not the alcohol.
Taste is sharp citrus and grapefruit rind with lemon peel and dark piney hops. No alcohol flavor here either.
Mouthfeel is very dry. The only thing left is a blackness that is the floral hops and the slight hint of the 7.2%.

A- Pale yellow with a nice, white head. Ring of foam remains throughout the drink, leaving behind white lacing throughout.

S- Sweet citrus, passion fruit, slight Simcoe-like cat box. Very faint toasted malts, and the faint smell of alcohol.

T- Very sweet passion fruit, and a huge range of citrus. I also catch a bit of a melon flavor in there. The bitterness is smooth and it hangs around. Slight boozy taste as it warms. The slight malt taste eventually starts to come through, but the hops are front and center.

M- Feels sticky and oily, coating the mouth. Feels great, and really enforces that sweet taste.

O- I am a huge fan of this brew from Schlafly. One of the best IPA's I've had to date, as the bitterness isn't oppressive and the hops taste absolutely fantastic. Well done, in my opinion.
