American IPA |  4.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our IPA is a session IPA, a smooth golden ale packed with the bold flavor and aroma of American hops. We crafted it in the spirit of the low gravity IPAs common in the UK where the style stands for hoppy, not heavy.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with hops as a natural preservative. Today, the term IPA is used for many full flavored beers along a wide array of recipes.

12 oz can into a pint glass.

A: Pours a golden amber color with good clarity. The head poured is ragged and downright ugly - it has a soapy-looking texture and fades away pathetically. She's not a looker, that's for damn sure.

S: Now this is better. The hops win out here, providing notes of grapefruit, pine, lemongrass, and even some tropical fruit touches. Maltiness doesn't really come through, but I don't care about that.

T: A combination of lemongrass and pine needles open things up, changing to a slightly tropical tone in the middle. There isn't much of a finish due to the dryness. All the carbonation creates an illusion of bitterness on the palate, but when given the chance to calm down, it reveals a nice flavor-to-bitterness ratio, with even a negligible hint of flavor layering.

M: Dry, dry, dry. It manages to avoid a watery pratfall, though, because of the lingering resin qualities. On the other hand, it's ridiculously fizzy - which makes the brew seem more bitter than it is, among other things.

O: It doesn't make me hard the way Lagunitas DayTime did, but that's because Centennial is pretty low down on my list of preferred hops. Still a successful low-alcohol hop vessel, though.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a light brassy hue with a two finger frothy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured balmy citrus hops and a touch of tropical fruit.

The taste offered a springy citrus hop with a secondary smooth pale malt sweetness.

The mouthfeel was typical of a session IPA.

Overall a tasty and quaffable IPA.

Ale poured a bright gold with a healthy inch and a half head. Aroma was light citrus and pine.. Taste was hop centered with a balancing malt backbone. Very refreshing and light on the palate but with a sufficient flavor for an IPA. The lower alcohol and quality flavor makes this a future go-to in the coming summer months.

Whenever I go down to DC to visit my aunt and uncle, like last weekend, I make it a point to stop in at the Whole Foods Market near Dupont Circle. They always seem to have new and different CANs on hand for me to take away in furtherance of The CANQuest (TM).

From the box housing the six-pack: "Schlafly Brewing Since 1991"; "CAN Sessions These are beers with big flavor, trialed over the bar at our brewpubs in St. Louis and crafted to be both easy to drink and hard to resist."; "IPA Schlafly IPA is a session IPA, a smooth golden ale packed with the bold flavor and aroma of Ameri[CAN] hops. We crafted it in the spirit of the low gravity IPAs common in the UK where the style stands for hoppy, not heavy. 4.5% ABV."; "Visit One of Our Brewpubs The Schlafly Tap Room The repurposed turn of the century historic building where Schlafly started. Choose form over 16 of our beers on tap and a menu of classic European fare. 2100 Locust Street. Schlafly Bottleworks Where we bottle over 20 different varieties a year. Visit us on a weekend for a free tour and tasting or pair a pint with food that features local farmers. 7260 Southwest Avenue."

From the CAN: "CAN Sessions Bold Flavor".

A Crack! befitting such a wondrous CANned beer set things in motion and was followed with an inverted Glug, resulting in two rocky, tawny fingers of dense head with decent retention. Color was a bright deep-amber (SRM - TBD). Nose smelled of fresh-mown grass and fresh-baked buscuits. Mmmm. Mouthfeel was a little on the thin side, but I was here for the hops, which were subdued for the style. It had more of a caramel-like sweetness, underlain by the grassy hops. I think that it should be redesignated as an "English IPA", given the verbiage of the packaging. Finish was still sweeter than I would like in an AIPA, but fitting for an EIPA. I CAN't say that I was disappointed, but neither was I totally enthusiastic, either.

Poured this 12 oz. can into a Sam Adams glass. Dated only weeks from consumption, so fresh! The body is a pale apricot color. Clear and bright. The white head settled to a ring.

The smell is earthy hops. Milled grain and lightly piney. Crackers too.

The taste was of bright, crisp hops. Crunchy, crispy hops bite. Not harsh but very flavorful. Light pine. I just love the drinkablity and the dry finish. I stocked this one in the fridge all summer!

The mouthfeel was medium to light and zesty in the mouth. Overall it is so satisfying.
