on tap at the taproom, this one let me down. it comes to the table murky auburn in color, with almost no head. the nose is great, smells just like a flanders red should, sour and pungent, leaning in the vinegar direction, with lots of cherry and apple fruit esters, really nice. the taste however, is really lacking. the fruits come through overripe, almost rotting, and the sourness is more acid than anything else, it almost hurts my teeth. lots of lacto happening here, but its all out of whack. the feel is even more off the mark, almost totally flat, caustic to the front of my tongue, and really thin in body. it turns my stomach a bit too. as someone who has consumed, reviewed, and pondered countless sour beers, I know what a good one looks like, and this one really doesn't cut it. I appreciate the ambition, but this might be a bit out of schlaflys wheelhouse. I would skip this if you want to eat a big lunch, or if you are interested in tasting any other beers. sort of a palate grenade here.

Appearance: Arrives with a minuscule head topping the garnet colored liquid; not much retention or lacing

Smell: Tart cherries, oak and some sweet cherry jam

Taste: The sweet and tart cherry elements intermingle with one another through the middle, when the oak adds complexity; lacto sourness builds into the finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with low carbonation but puckery tartness

Overall: Pretty darn nice though it lacks a little funky complexity; still a respectable effort and quite approachable

Poured into a snifter at the Schlafly Tap Room.

Pours a very nice dark copper color with some slight amber and ruby hues. There is a thin slightly off white head that forms that is about 1/4 of an inch and of a light ecru color. Very pretty color.

The aroma is very true to style and delicious. Starts off with midl vinegar notes and some fruit tartness. Some raspberry vinaigrette notes are present in the nose. There is also a nice dry woody character to the nose as well as some slight dark fruit sweetness that is very hidden amongst the tartness. Sight hint of woody vanilla as well.

Flavor start off with a sharp and drying tartness that isn't intense or overwhelming. Very refreshing with some slight vinegar notes and some mild yeasty funk. There is some nice slight fruity notes such as grape and even some midl cherry. Nice vinous character to the brew with some woody vanilla hints present mixed in with good mild, dry and refreshing tartness. Light body with a nice dry finish.

Overall a delicious take on the style by Schlafly. Very true to form IMO.
