Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Oak Aged Barleywine has a deep copper color and an intense malt flavor balanced by assertive hops. Fermentation with American ale yeast allows the caramel malt to shine. We age the beer on new, medium toast Missouri Oak to enhance its complexity and to develop its smooth, luscious character.

Barleywine is a classic English-style hearty ale. The term refers to a beer with the potency of wine and is often vintage-dated.

This beer will continue to age well in a cool dark place for several years, but it is ready to enjoy now.

Schlafly Reserve Oak-aged Barleywine 2010 Vintage (cool!)

Poured hard into a Duvel snifter

Sight: Dark opaque brown with red hints when examined in sunlight. Tan red that when poured hard, develops into a nice inch-high cushion, but recedes to a thin film. Protein particles settle to the bottom. Should I have poured it with a softer hand? Lacing is one of icicles from the gutters and eaves of a house in Connecticut.

Smell: Much malt, bread and biscuit. I also smell a little booze, and dark fruit or raisin. Did they forget to put in hops?

Taste: More of the same I perceived from the smell. Malt, bread, biscuit… a touch of caramel? A touch of caramel. Some people mentioned butterscotch off a 2012 vintage, but I didn’t get it from its 2 year elder. Hops are only slightly evident, and show up late to the party. We’ll call this a dark-fruit malt bomb. Almost like a Belgian Quad… and I like it.

Mouthfeel: As a somm might say, “medium plus.” It’s coating and a bit of really tiny bubble, not Ian Anderson thick-as-a-brick.

Overall: I feel fortunate to have an aged beer, but not highly sought after, like others out there. I think I may have had my fill of English-style barleywine, but I still haven’t had Mother of All Storms… my white whale.

Poured into a clean tulip glass

A: Dark golden brown plenty of carbonation and three fingers width of head.

S: Spicy and oaky with rich caramel malt.

T: A really good spicy bite, with a sweet caramel taste.

M: slightly thick but still smooth and slightly creamy.

O: Very good beer. Because of the spiciness and its thickness it would be better to drink it in cooler weather but still very good

Sweet and unusually spicy, Schlafly's English-style Barleywine places barley malt on a pedestal with its complex flavors and strong sweetness. But the balance of spice gives the ale something that's richly oaken and earthy.

Pouring a rich honey-amber color, the beer is lightly tawny even though a supple haze exists. The thickness of the elixir allows for a slowly forming head to accumulate above the beer with semi-strong retention and lightly lacing on the glass. I get the impression that the beer's own viscosity impedes its head and lace character.

Juicy malt aromas of caramel, honey and fruit swirl about with the intensity that would rival port and raki. Its firm fruitcake aromas borrow almond, sultan, cherry, apple and grape- all in dehydrated and condensed form. But the scent of oak is paramount as a mild scotch whisky scent springs to life above its herbal hop presence and its fruity ester complements.

Strong and sweet to taste, the ale's bold caramel, butterscotch, biscuit and marzipan-like sweetness invites fruit and herbal flavors of oranges, apples and peaches in marmalade form. Its sweet fruitiness fuses with tea-like hops for a taste of curing tobacco. Finishing with sweet scotch flavor, its booziness is met with earthy peat, coconut and maple wood. Its mild bitterness is woody and broad and the oak only facilitates that.

Its full and syrupy body is creamy and lifted a bit with its medium carbonation- providing a fuller effect on the palate. As the ale's sweetness pulls from its carbonation, the ale lightens moderately and allows the alcohol, hops and tannin to dry the ale to a semi-sweet level of drinkability.

Schlafly's newest Barleywine shares some attributes with their Single Malt Scotch Ale, but not as intense on the wood. Another bottle shared reveals a much different character- a more white or rose wine flavor and feel accompanied the sweetness. It was much drier, more tart and more tannin-dry. Perhaps much variation can be expected from bottle to bottle.
