Style | ABV
Maibock / Helles Bock |  6.40% ABV

Availability: Spring

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Maibock is a golden, malty lager with a hint of sweetness. This festival Bock is balanced by German Noble hops, giving the beer a slightly dry finish.

Bavarian brewers made Maibock for Maifest, the annual celebration of the arrival of spring. Accordingly, the festival beer has a medium body and gravity, thus bridging the divide between the stronger, darker bocks of winter and the lighter, paler lagers of summer.

Tan and clear, with great sheets of lacing and a nice head.

Smell was somewhat like a hef, with plenty of yeast and a little sweetness.

Taste was plenty malty with some honey like sweetness, lots of great yeast flavors, and some light spices.

Feel was light and drinkable, yet still had plenty of great body. The alcohol is well concealed and the aftertaste was lightly sweet with lingering yeast.

Overall it's a fine example of the style, and another great beer from the Schlafly taproom.

A: GOlden yellow color with small white meringue fluffy head. Large, slwo rising bubbles. Looks thick.

S: Alcohol right up front followed by a huge rush honey sweetness. Smells of a big time rich pils with an awesome hop spice bite.

T: Alcohol, sweet malt, lemon pepper bite/spice. Clean flavors and comes and goes quickly.

M: Oily and creamy with spicy carbonation. Thick and simple syrup like consistency.

O: I ahve never ahd this style so I feel inadequate to judge it based on the style, however, I will review based on my idea flavors of beer. A little to sweet for me but the mouthfeel was quite nice.

This beer isn't as crisp as some other maibocks i've had. It still has a very good, golden taste. My roommate and I took a growler of this back from the Tap room and I have to say it tasted fery fesh and tasty. It has a really good blend of hops and malt with the hops coming out on top. Not the best of this style i've had but still very good

Pours a clear, dark gold color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, pale malt, grain, yeast, hint of hops, and slight citrus. Fits the style of a Maibock / Helles Bock. Mouth feel is smooth and clean with a low carbonation. Tastes of sweet malt, slight earthy malt, dough, slight hop, and slight citrus. Overall, good appearance aroma, and body.

on tap at the Schlafly Taproom

Deep bronze color with a constant plume of bubbles emitting form the glass bottom. Head head leaves some sticky lace up top but none of the foam held for very long.

Smells like spicy grain and heavy, viscous sweet unripened bananas.

Tastes of spicy grain and honey covered unripened bananas. Agressive carbonation really bolsters the spicey flavors.

Poured a nice bronze color, very carbonated with a rich foamy head.
Smelled very sweet, with good hop aromas.
On first taste, there was a bite of hops, and slightly bitter. It followed with a nice caramel flavor and smooth hop taste. Slight warming sensation from the higher alcohol (The bartender at the Tap Room said between 7&8%). A little sweet for my tastes, but still very drinkable.

This one really fooled me at first, color was a clear lemon yellow with nice white head. Had to double check with the waitress to make sure it was the Maibock. She confirmed – and had 2 more pints exactly the same.

Nice malty aroma, very smooth honey laced taste, balanced with hops, but no hop kick or finish. Perhaps a tad too sweet, but perfectly carbonated – would make a good spring/summer brew.

This is a favorite style of mine. Steve and Otto (the brewers) didn’t disappoint. This Maibock leaned more toward the golden color (which I prefer). It didn’t pour much of a head, but retained a lace. The aroma was of hops, with a little alcohol (to be expected). Taste, malt, sweet malt. The malt hits you first, and tastes great. It does a nice job of covering the alcohol bite, no lingering taste. This is a great Maibock. I think it may be a little too sweet to drink more than 1 or 2, but that is the rule for me with Maibocks. In my opinion, this is a great example of the style.

A mild to deep copper color with a casual froth at the top.

I smelled an alcohol bite at the forefront which was calmed by a little caramel and decent hop burst.

Tasting followed close to the aroma. An alcohol bite at first but was then calmed by a nice helping of malt. Toasted caramel and a slight citrus sting made this an excellent brew.

Thick and chewy mouthfeel that left a nice sweet coating on the toungue.

Overly zealous drinkablitly could lead to a cab ride home! I would've had another but I had to get back to the hotel which was a confusing drive sober. Hey, I'm not a local I just visit.

This beer had a large sized ivory head that contained fine-large sized bubbles that was mostly lasting. The body was clear with some carbonation observed, and the hue was amber. The nose was lightly malty, sweet and fruity. The flavor was sweet tasting and bitter with an aftertaste. The mouthfeel was smooth with a thin texture and full bodied. This beer left a good lacing on the sides of my glass.

A nice brew that has full body and is mixed in many dimensions. The gold-hued copper colored body is clear but lacks a decent head. The lace dimension is nil and the aroma a bit light and mostly malt. The flavor is malt and little else with a bit much sweetness. Lacks crispness for this style.

Reviewed from a growler...

Appearance: Pours an extremely pale copper with gold edges. The clarity is fantastic; the head is not, as it starts out as a small cap and quickly fades to a small ring.

Smell: Faint aroma of sweet malt...not much else.

Taste: Starts out sweet and malty, with a touch of honey. There's a small hint of freshly mown hay, as well as a bit of toasted malt. A touch of bitterness shows up halfway and takes control through the finish. Slight alcohol flavor on the tail end. A bit lacking, but still decent...

Mouthfeel: Full and round with a medium mouthfeel. A touch of dryness in the finish. I'm noticing that most of Schlafly's lager seasonals feel the same in the mouth.

Drinkability: Not bad. This is by no means a bad brew, it's just not all that interesting. The mouthfeel isn't right for the style. As strange as this sounds, it feels more like an ale on the tongue. It's missing that crisp effervescence...
