So I had a work project that put me up at the Hampton Inn about 2 blocks from here so I was there on three consecutive nights. First night, just popped in for a quick beer before getting ready for work the next day. Second night for dinner and a few beers and the third night for two more pints.

The building itself is pretty cool. An old brick structure with lots of exposed wood on the inside. What looked like a really small set-up on the first night turns out to have more fermenters in other rooms and is a decent sized operation.

First night there was a big post Cardinals game crowd so service was quick but I didn't really get a chance to ask about the beers or the operation. On the second night was calmer and talked extensively to a different bartender who has an obvious passion for beer (we talked about our experiences in Belgium and wanting to go back) and he knew his own products. Basically the kind of experience I love to have in an unfamiliar brewery/out-of-town city. Third night, yet another bartender was more interested in talking to a regular at the end of the bar than keeping an eye on things. It was slow and my glass sat empty and others would wander from the pool tables to the bar and stand and wait while she talked. Oh, well...

The dinner I had was a nice steak and the food I saw coming out of the kitchen all looked pretty good. The menu is pretty much pub grub but a little more extensive than most brewpubs.

There were about 10 beers available and I got through more than half of them. They were all good but I'll admit I didn't have one that would have me clamoring to get back here. But in a city dominated by you-know-who, I think they're doing a great job of trying to break through without shocking people. I would definitely recommend it if you find yourself in St. Louis.

This was the first Craft Brewery I ever experienced. The food was good and the beer was great. It made a lasting impression on me. Even though there are several new breweries in ST. Louis Schlafly is still the original, and they are still making great beers.
