In Missouri, en route for points further west yet. This is the definition of a shitty trip, not so much because of the ride but rather the end game. 4 hours in and another 4 hours to KC where I'll set Randy free; this break in the day was to be the last supper in the lunch hour. Seems my best laid plans won't pan. We're a few hours away from knowing this, but inklings abound...
Housed in a post apocalyptic Manhattan-type set of massive brick brickings, it looks like buildings pieced together. Park in the big empty lunchtime lot, enter and hook to the right. Sizably open room with an "L" shaped stained stainless steel panel topped bar with a wood lip on the up front. Diamond plate front base, piping foot rail, and seating for a dozen on stools not backed. Barback is wood counter space with wines & booze displayed, and centerpiece 750's pedestalled. Large ornate framing, the inlayed area a green mosaic tiling of shapes with a logo crest on center, and diamond plating below with shelving extended glassware, a center shelf of scotch & singles. They've got a beautiful hand carved Schlafly logo piece of hops & leaves, painted up nice. Long double wide plank table bar counter just behind me, and nearly 2 and a half dozen tables out across the room.
Brown walls and brick outers with archway windows, old plank wood floors & ceiling, and massive beam up rights. Black ducts, spinny fan & pan lamps, and track spots over the bar. Spacious brew room with a trio of 15bbl fermenters behind glass on the far wall. Mash tun/conditioning tank action as well. Logo piece and beer style placards of "what you missed" stuff not on now, paneled "Schlafly beers on tap at such and such bars & restaurants" boards done up in colored chalk, an events & music board, a "hop in the city" mural, mounted deer heads, you know, the usual.
A trio of 2-pronged stand up microphone tap handles on each end, and sunken handpumps off each set. Looking at the tap selections displayed as a list on magnetic strips on the pillars along the bar, I think, um, maybe, sampler (I always think sampler). This one comes with 5 house standards on a place mat listing ABV's & IBU's (Oatmeal Stout, smooth, roasty, oaty, with a sweet bitterness; Dry Hopped APA, done with Zeus grown up the side of someone's garage, a good hoppiness there; Hefeweizen, hazy, but very unhefelike overall with its lack of clove and bananalessness, it's more an American wheat Ale, Kolsch, it's just a good clean Kolsch is all; Pale Ale, easy drinking amber oddly on the sweet side), and then because I was my usual pleasant self (sarcasm), I was able to, well, keep them seasonals coming (Wit, damn, that's a whole lot, and I mean, a whole lot of coriander, uh huh; Hop Harvest, earthy, spicy, a big mouth of Amarillo is what I got, okay, I get the Amarillo children's aspirin thing now; Oktoberfest, malty sweet wonderfulness; Oud Bruin, tasty, with some light sourness, it's no Goudie but then Goudie isn't even Goudie anymore; Pumpkin, rings in at 8%, cinnamonny backbone but it's a good pumpkin; Cask American Brown Ale, big grapefruity hop presence; cask dry hopped APA, took all the corners off but the CO2 version is better; and a blackberry cider, apple based, not too bad. The Oatmeal Stout, Kolsch, Oktoberfest & Pumpkin were the best of 'em, although there was nothing there that really sucked.
And foodings. I did a bowl of the steak chili, solid, beans, warming, and a BLT that defeated me, it's true, but to be fair, it was unruly and did come with fries. Randy; the veggie burger, and yes, pickled vegetables. The carrots, done in star of anise, were excellent, and the cucs didn't suck either.
Around the other side, an 8 seat bar with logo pieces inlayed on the stainless steel. 6 raised roundies adjacent for the sitting at and a small cool side nook room with 4 tables on benched seating. Past the bar, 2 pool tables with a foos in between, 3 dart boards, a Dirty Harry pinball machine in the corner (I know what you're thinking, did you play three balls or only two?), and a juke and some high tops back there. Deep greens, with black & whites of old goings on & this space under construction. Views over the out back Biergarten, a ½ dozen tables enclosed gatingly. Shirts & bottlings in the front area, and an event space upstairs.
Paul is the single most knowledgeable guy behind a brewpub bar ever (Well, he has worked here for like 19 years). He let me sample some things, some things, he did. Beer was solid overall and the food was a-plenty. Good scene and no TV's, so you'll have to actually hold a conversation in lieu of the idiot box. Oh, poor you. Solid joint.
Bonus: they've got the coolest Star Trek bathroom hand dryers, you know, ever.

I flew in to Lambert Saturday afternoon and hit up the Tap Room straight from the airport. We ended up rolling in around 5ish, and it happened to be during a Fish Fry event that was being held. Even with the event (and the place was absurdly packed, the wait was less than it took us to finish an entire pint. We hit up one of the bars, easily found seats and waited for our table. The building itself has a lot of character, very rustic, all exposed hardwood. It was cozy, but yet had a bit of a factory feel to it. Our waitress was the perfect balance between attentive and not being up your arse, which is difficult given how busy it was to begin with. The food offered here is extrodinarily different than that at the Bottleworks - so if you're looking for some of your favs from bottleworks, don't come here. However, I enjoyed the selection and was amazed to see Poutine on the menu! This is a Canadian app that I've only ever seen offered in Maine, and is a favorite of mine. My dinner companion went for a burger, and I did a soup and salad. The portions were HUGE and I definitely ordered too much. For what we ordered, and what we got, the pricing was great. They had about 8 different beers on tap - one being the Smoked Porter which hadn't been brewed in several years. So we got a growler to go and were very happy with the experience overall.
Schlafly continues to be one of my favorites while in the St. Louis area.

When you first enter Schlafly Tap Room (the original brewery of Schlafly beer) you're greeted with a limited selection of merch and a mess of the 750s and some of the seasonal release beers for purchase. Then you can go to the right (main dining area, main bar, brewery facility) or left (small bar, food service at the bar, and billiards tables) or up (large 2nd floor area for private parties with a nice little bar). The small left bar (typically where my friends congregate because it's quieter) has everything offered at the main bar and a few flat screens for games. The main bar and dining area is beautiful with hand crafted wood work. There are typically about 14 beers on tap (couple staples, then the rest are rotating taps). Tap Room is also great for getting cask beers and on-off beers. The staff matches the atmosphere, they're very knowledgeable and helpful across all levels of beer knowledge (for helping new initiates experience beer to talking shop with home brewers).
If you're in St Louis and you love beer, you better get yourself to the Tap Room. End of story.

There is no wonder why this is the number 3 brewery in Missouri! They've got a great BrewPub to back up their tasty ales! While only staying at this brewery for two pints (Christmas Ale & Oatmeal Stout), I had a great vibe from the place and will be returning once I am back in the area of Washington Ave.
While Schlafly has a variety that is usual tremendous, they only offered 2 of their beers on tap that I haven't tried and I wanted to explore new beers they had to offer. The service also was average as it took us 15 minutes to order a beer and our party was never greeted. Overall, the beer was excellent, prices very cheap, and atmosphere friendly and inviting.

Have returned over 5 times since my first visit (including their Anniversary Party, Cod&Cask Festival, and for dinner 3 separate times). Have much more of a positive review now that I've seen both busy nights, events, and also dining in.
Both Paddy and Paul have done a fantastic job at the bar with all of the parties I attended with. If you are coming with a group of friends and just there to hang out, the north bar is more for you with a dart board, pinball machine, pool table, and jukebox to keep you busy. The south bar is more easy going and is next to the dining room so isn't as rowdy. You are by a few of their brew kettles and have a clear hop note on your nose the entire time. Just what I like!
When it comes to food, I highly recommend their Swine Plate, including a bratwurst, fried bacon, a pork chop, mash potatoes, and gravy. What a feast. I have also enjoyed their 1 lb. reuben sandwich, roasted amish chicken, pretzels, and boiled shrimp. One thing I wouldn't recommend and won't be going back to will be their frog legs. Not much meat or anything to them.
I'm hoping they keep brewing more innovative styles! I lately have enjoyed their Vanilla Milk Stout and Chocolate Orange Stout and both were amazing! Also, the New Zealand IPA was fantastic but will not be around much longer. Get yourself into this place!

Stopped in on a recent visit to St. Louis. This was our dinner stop for our brewery day. The dining area is very nice with a good looking bar and a cool look at some of the brewing equipment through a window. The menu is not really my style. Not a typical brewpub menu which is neat but a little too much for me. The beers are good and there are quite a few to try. The staff is easy to talk to and helpful with the beers. Lots of small batch bottles for sale and Schlafly gear. Grabbed a few bottles and a growler. I'd go back for the beer bread and a flight some day.

Last time I was at the taproom, I wasn't impressed overall. We didn't have anything to eat but it looked like they had a great selection of eats. The selection on tap was pretty small taking into account that Schlafly brews over 40 different beers. I think, at the time we went, there were only 8 beers on tap. I ended up having an oatmeal stout and their APA as well as some other standards/flagships.
Atmosphere was relaxed and the bartender was absent when not quickly and rudely filling our requests. We didn't ask anything major out of the staff, didn't ask for samples, etc. A group of four sober patrons simply ordering a couple of pints... Beer pours were off but filled generously enough. The place was empty enough for our group to enjoy our conversations without shouting but the service/workers really didn't add anything to the experience.
All in all, this is just an average run-of-the-mill brewpub where one can try Schlafly beer. Maybe I'll have food and sit in the restaurant portion of the building next time and re-review...

A family reunion in middle-of-nowhere Illinois = the opportunity to stop in for lunch at a brewpub in St. Louis.
Schlafly Tap Room is located in an interesting part of downtown that looks to be the historic district. Neat, old buildings line the streets. The Tap Room occupies a restored building that was previously a printing factory - big and beautiful. I love brewpubs that find spots like this and make it work. Feels like it could have been a brewery all along. The interior is huge and begs to be explored. Space is definitely not lacking. The outside front patio (more like a small courtyard) makes for an enjoyable outdoor experience weather permitting.
Solid beer all around with about a dozen beers on tap. Regular lineup sampler doesn't disappoint (APA stands out), and the seasonal Pumpkin Ale is pretty good. The C3 (as in collaboration between three breweries) is an interesting hoppy Mild. Excellent.
Service this particular visit wasn't so hot. It wasn't bad necessarily, just not great. Considering the lack of crowd on an early afternoon, it was odd that our waitress seemed to be in slow motion. We sat quite a bit just waiting. Not a big deal, though, and nothing that would keep me from going back again by any means.
Interesting menu consisting of the usual suspects along with some more atypical offerings. It's refreshing to see things like frog legs, rarebit, falafel, and roasted lamb on a brewpub menu. Priced well too.
Good beer and excellent surroundings - I could spend many hours wasting away lazy afternoons if I lived here. I will visit again next time I'm in St. Louis.
EDIT: To me, this is definitely an "A" brewpub. Hopefully I'll get to go back sometime and remedy the service rating that has dragged down my overall score.

Well I went here last week and was exceptionally pleased. Overall value was very fine, and they gave us a military discount too!
The beers were great, especially the pumpkin, and they had two cask offerings on hand, the dry-hopped APA and the brown, both of which were delicious.
The selection was quite good, as they had about 14 offerings on tap or in cask.
The prices were quite reasonable, not super cheap but very acceptable for a bar, and for such quality brews.
I thought the food was quite good, not super cheap but on par with the type of establishment.
The take out was great too. 6.99 for a standard sixer, 8.99 for the grand cru and other premium bottle conditioned beers, and 10.99 for the 2008 special reserve imperial stout. With a tee-shirt I think I bought sixty plus bucks of take out, and would do it again. The sixers were cheaper than I can find them elsewhere. Since I haven't seen their premium bottle conditioned beers anywhere else, I can't say if that was a good price or not, but it seemed on par with others of similar type that I have found around the country (aka Boulevard Smokestack).
I will be back for sure! Highly recommend!!
My most recent trip here resulted in my liking the place even more. Not changing my rating numbers but I tried the swine platter and the beer battered bacon... to DIE for! Which you probably will, due to artery cloggage!
Also every time I go there people are really nice and wind up buying me free beers. :-) Military discounts.
Also, you can get a "sampler" of beers. I got the six pack sampler for myself and two other people I met there and we shared them. Each was a five ouncer, I think. it's not on the beer menu tho, it might have been in the food menu but I'm not sure, so ask for it. Good way to gauge what you'd like to have a full glass of before you buy.
Also, I got a growler of dry-hopped APA, definitely one of their very best offerings which I highly recommend.
Very nice location because it's about a six buck cab ride from union station (where the ball park is) or you can walk if the weather is nice (it's a bit of a walk tho). It's also just a six dollar cab ride back to the arch/casino/landing district, which is right by the train station. Essentially any hotel in town that's near the train is a fine place to access the Taproom from, being able to get there pretty easily/cheaply and without having to drive.

A - This place is located ina very cool area of St. Louis where most if not all buildings are red brick. The inside is nice and old school with nice wood beams and finishes amongst the nice brick structure. There are two bars one in a more traditional sense and the other ion a larger dinning room area that views the brewing equipment. The place is loud even at traditionally off hours like a Sat at 230pm which is awesome. Overall great feel.
Q - Schalfly beers are great! This time around I tried their cask India Brown Ale a great Brown Ale spiced up with great quantities of hops.
S - This was my first visit to the Tap Room and initially our waitress seemed annoyed when I asked what was on tap as opposed to recognizing the menu that was pinched between the salt and pepper shakers at our table. Other than this she was prompt and adequate.
S - Great offering of the Schlafly draft menu that you might not usually find in bottles. vEry good stuff.
F - Tried the pub fries and the pita and dip. Very good pub food.

I took my family here for a part of my wife and I's anniversary a couple of days ago. I intended to go to the bottle works, but accidently went here with no regrets.
The place is located in a slightly run down part of town, but the area does have some potential. We were going to sit in the beer garden, but moved inside for fear of becoming victims of a drive by. Once inside, I kind of got the feeling of an olde school style of bar circa 1935... Lots of wood, a lot of dudes having a beer to discuss the events of the day, or just to chill.
The waitress was very attentive, so no complaints in this department. I did not strike up a conversation with her in order to gauge her beer knowledge.
I didn't look at the drink card for the day, but I'm pretty sure one cannot go wrong when coming to a great beer producer.
The food was okay, but I could tell very fresh. I started off with the frog legs (my first time ever). I loved them as well as my two year old daughter. My wife wouldn't touch them, since she's a wimp... The shepherd's pie I ordered tasted great, but wasn't what I would consider a shepherd's pie. It was vegetarian. My wife ordered a pita thing that was supposed to have humus as the main ingredient, but it didn't have any humus. The worst was their "German" style potatoes salad. I've lived in Germany for eight years and never had potatoes salad like this before... Still had a good taste to it, though.
Overall the beer was decently priced, but the food was a little expensive and overpriced. We did share the desert at the end. It was labeled as a bread pudding I believe. It was big enough for three people and tasted out of this world. Besides the beer, that was the high point of the occasion.
Lastly, don't hold your breath for a deal on the beer to go. We got some Shlafly reserves, and I bet they are way over priced.
