My interpretation of an Irish stout, with an extra portion of choice barley, special and aromatic malts to give the beer its distinctive full-bodied flavor.

A robust beer of deep, dark color with an aroma of roasted malt combined with the taste of sweet caramel, delicious dark chocolate notes and a hint of wild berries.

Feb. 2014: 750 ml bottle, from Alcampo Gran Canaria. ABV is 7.5%. Dark brown colour, large beige head. Moderately roasty aroma with hints of chocolate and dark berries. The flavour is malty but not too sweet, notes of pumpernickel bread and chocolate, hints of berries and coffee in the finish.

dominated by roasted grains, dark chocolate -roast coffee. Starts sweet and ends slightly sour/bitter.
Not a standout bock but pleasant enough.

Pours a deep, dark, almost black, brown coloration with a large, fluffy head. Smells of slightly roasted, caramel malt and light chocolate and coffee aromas, as well as just a hint of earthy/herbal hops. Taste follows the nose, with a good balance of slightly roasted, bready, caramel malt, light chocolate and coffee notes and hints of dark and much lighter red fruit: raisin, plum, redcurrant, as well as just a touch of licorice and earthy/herbal hops. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some lightly roasted malt, coffee and chocolate lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

The brewer describes this as "his interpretation of an Irish Stout, bottom-fermented as a Bock" and that's exactly what it tastes like, a mixture of a Dry Stout and Doppelbock, combining the roasted, bitter elements of the former with the sweet, fruity elements of the latter in really a nice way that really works out quite well. At 5€ for a 0.75l bottle, M&F are proving once again that they are the kings of value for money in Germany.

-Caution, for people who do not favour beer with sediment in the pour/glass. This bottle had rested for over a week yet effectively all the sediment was in the pour, and that IME is unusual that it still hadn't setttled much at all. I don't mind that, in this case it suggests the brewers expect it and haven't an issue vs quality, but if you happen to, maybe try resting this 2 weeks+, or even a month?

L- Very dark ruby chestnut. Despite resting for several days since purchase, and poured carefully it's strikingly cloudy. Pours with 1Cm pale tan fine-bubble head. Holds incredibly well plus forms lacing right down the sides of the glass.
S- Fresh roast coffee, very roasty-toasty.
T- Espresso, high quality 75%+ dark chocolate, quite rich. Both aspects come in balance, neither dominates.
F- Puddingy, like a choco-coffee dessert reinterpreted as a beer. It's rich, I expect blind-tasted I'd be open to suggestion that this is higher than 7.5%.
O- Coffee + chocolate prominent but neither dominate. Rich for 7.5%, would work well in colder months, ideal as a festive treat. Nothing out of place or notably off-balance. Nothing off-piste/niche like rauch/smoke flavours.
I'd happily buy this again, but wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit of a challenge to source outside Germany. I bought this from BeersOfEurope in the UK.
750ml bottle. BB 26/03/2021.

ps. It's an interesting note to be reminded of, this is brewed per the trad German Reinheitsgebot, ie 5*ingredients, water, barley, malt, hops+yeast only. All, or perhaps I should write ALL that coffee and chocolate comes from within those trad ingredients; pretty remarkable!

Best before September 9th 2019.

Pours a dark brown, some reddish hues, ample and pleasant looking head of off white foam.

Smells of roasted malt, kinda sweet, dark chocolate bitterness.

This has a bitter sweet thing with going on with some lactose, roasted malt and toffee. Pretty tasty.

Medium body with medium carbonation.

More malt forward than hoppy, thank goodness. It's a big bottle but the drinkability is also big. I favour this one.
