Served well chilled into a franziskaner hefe glass while touring in Lubeck, Germany.

Appearance - Vibrant orange color, with nearly three fingers of fluffy white head that settles into a coalescing half finger head after a while. Lots of spotty lacing interspersed with some spidery lacing on the glass.

Smell - fairly aromatic banana bread, and some very subtle hints of citrus. The usual wheat, banana, and clove dominate though. Traditional hefe fare, and well executed.

Taste - light orange peel and coriander with a tremendous banana burst up front then a dropping of into the flavours of wheat and banana with some clove mixed in. Some pepper in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - smooth, reasonably well carbonated, with a bit of a spritzy feel. Not quite as light as some of the true greats, but definitely not heavy either.

Overall - a vey fine hefe that's in the same class as some of its great German brethren.

A- Slightly hazy gold with about an inch of fizzy head. The head goes down faster than a... well, you can probably fill in the rest with your own dirty mind.

S- Big aroma of overripe bananas with that characteristic wheaty twang. Stronger than I was expecting and pretty nice.

T- In contrast to the smell the taste is quite mild. There's still that banana character and the wheaty twang, only dialed down a bit. There's also a slight vegetal hint on the finish and a bit of a chalky aftertaste. Not overly complex, but pleasant.

M- Light and bright thanks to an active carbonation. It's pretty much what a good wheat beer should be.

O- Not a bad hefeweizen at all. I wouldn't have minded a bit more complexity, but you could do worse than this on a hot summer day. I don't know that I'd seek it out, but I wouldn't mind drinking it occasionally.

On tap at Redlight Redlight. Color a little dark. Rich creamy head. Good aroma. Taste’s too sweet, almost cloying as it warmed. The balance of banana to clove was good, but too much sweetness detracted from the refreshing quality of this style. Body was medium heavy. Good carbonation. A good hefe but just a little too heavy.

500mL bottle into a hefe glass

A: Pours a rusty copper color, opaque even more so than is typical in the style. 3 fingers width of off white colored head builds then dissipats down fairly quickly to thin film. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

S: A bit of clove and some banana-y esters, pale malt, a bit of skunky aromas, wheat.

T: Wheat, some peppery spice, subtle clove and banana, pale malt. Ok but not hefe punch I got in the best of the style.

M/D: Lighter side of medium bodied, carbonation o the higher end which is appropriate, drinkability is average.

O: Overall, its ok. Better than some of the American hefe's but far from the best in the style.
