Poured a cloudy light yellow with a fluffy white head which died down quickly.

Smells sweet, banana, lemons and wheat.

Tastes of wheat with a little citrus and spices.

Has a medium mouth feel with medium carbonation.

A decent enough hefeweizen just a bit too sweet.

Label design: Lovely typo logo. Looks very distinguished on the shelf amongst the other beers.

S: Almost no aroma.

A: Beautiful almost amber colour. Opaque. Head is slightly yellow but vanishes without a trace after a couple of minutes.

T: Refeshingly no banana, okay maybe just a tad. Maybe peach and something else. Very summery. I get barley, like in those Lucozade glucose drinks. Quite fizzy but it suits the flavour. Very, very subtle hint of cat piss in the aftertaste.

O: It could probably work a bit harder but it's slightly unique and very summery.

500ml bottle poured into pint glass 3/2/12

A hazy peachy orange with some massive bubbles stuck around the glass, the foam is large but short lived leaving the surface looking like a boiling pot

S fruity gum and dry cereal with just a little spice

T much like the smell but with just a little citrus and faint banana, the flavor and smell are good but a little faint

M light and fluffy from the bubbles, I think I get more intense flavors after I swallow it

O decent stuff but need to be pumped up a notch, everything's there but in small quantities

there's better hefe's for the same price here in Alberta I might not be thinking of this one when summer hits

Recent addition to the beer stable @ Trackside in Medicine Hat.

Certainly looks like a Weisse with the cloudy aprocot colour( although this beer is slightly darker than say Weihenstephaner). Nice thick head, good retention.

Classic Weisse aromas..caramel, banana, clove, and a slight tinge of pepper. Nice balance as no single aroma dominates.

Solid in the taste department as well. Bit watery initailly, but then the malt and banana yeast kick in. Clove and pepper spice follow up and linger into the dry finish.

Decent feel once the very brief watery period at the beginning is over.

Solid example of the style. Good summer thirst killer.

500ml bottle, BB March 2012, 5.2% ABV, and "Aus Bayreuth" instead of 'Original'. Not much difference, I know.

This beer pours an only slightly cloudy, medium golden amber hue, with a multitude of tightly foamy, puffy ecru head, which settles at pace to a low-slung whipped cream topping, eventually leaving some reaching arches of lace in select spots on the glass.

It smells of crisp wheat grain, banana, clove, a bit of citrus candy sweetness, and some soft yeast. Most of this carries forward to the flavour, with perhaps more emphasis on the sweet wheat grain notes, the fruit laying low, and taking the spice and yeast with it.

The bubbles lay quite low, providing just a little edge to an otherwise smooth, fairly solid medium weight body. It finishes off-dry, the sweet wheat, earthy yeast, and fleshy fruit rounding things out.

A pretty decent hefeweizen veritable, the real deal. Drinkable, especially for me, as the notable banana and yeast characteristics are kept in check, and that always works for me. Not that I don't like these inherent essences, but just not being inundated with them. Prost!

On tap at Green Dragon in Portland, OR.

A finger of white head. Deep yellow body, some lace.

Bubblegum banana nose, very sweet.

Slight crispness up front, but then it's a banana-wheat smoothie. Nice.

Not too thick, sparse, bright carb.

Nice-a weisse! Get it? Because, you know.. it rhymes... It's a decent heff, but it's definitely on the sweet side, which works fine for me.

Bottle purchased from Binny's in Schaumburg, IL.
No clear bottled on date.
Poured into a US pint glass.

Pours a tall, fluffy head of off-white bubbles of medium and small size, creating a sponge-like head that slowly decreases to a thin cap atop the beer. Body is a cloudy orange-copper away from the light, orange-yellow when held to one. Carbonation is visible, along with some yeast that gradually floats to the bottom of the glass.

Aroma is pleasantly sweet and light from wheat malt, alongside banana, yeast, and light vanilla, orange peel, and clove scents.

Taste opens with sweetish wheat malt, then combines fair amounts of yeast with sweet wheat malt and banana esters. This perpetuates into the mid-palate, which also brings in, in the background, clove-like phenols, a bit of bubblegum, and very mild continental hops. Aftertaste of sweet bananas and yeastiness.

Body is medium, slightly lighter around the edges. Carbonation is in high enough amounts to be felt, but not caustic or getting in the way of being able to taste. The result is a relatively smooth mouthfeel with a fairly dry finish.

Overall, a very solid and good-tasting German-style hefeweizen. Should rank in the top members of the style that are available in the US, and one to add to the collection of those "good enough to get again."

Pours a cloudy, off-orange color. White foamy head dissipates quickly to a thin white layer. No lacing.

Smells of sweet malt and licorice, hints of ripe banana, and some orange peel. Some hints of bubblegum, and cloves.

Tastes of citrus and banana, with some tart sour notes in the finish. Carbonation in the finish as well.

Mouthfeel is tart, with some creaminess in the middle. Carbonation in the finish.

A nice example of the style.

I poured my Maisel's Weisse Originial from a bottle into a mug with a dark tangerine colour with a 1cm of head that left no lacing. The scent was of banana, cloves and bubblegum. In terms of taste and mouthfeel, a prickly spice hit me first, then bubblegum with a less prominent wheat taste. I'm a huge hefewiezen fan, and I really enjoyed this one, so I'll definitely be drinking it again.

Appearance: Poured into a half-liter weizen glass. I did an awful job on the pour, and it showed with a complete lack of head. A finger of light, white foam developed and dissipated quickly. The color, though, is pretty solid. (I could not mess that up.) It is cloudy gold/amber.

Smell: Exactly what I want from the style. The nose is hit by lots of fruit — apple, banana, and maybe strawberries — which are balanced with a perfect amount of bready yeast and clove and pepper spice. There is bubblegum in there, too.

Taste: The mouthfeel is light but also bready and quenching; it coats the mouth with a lot of sweetness. The flavor mostly mirror the smell: apple, banana, strawberry, yeast, clove, pepper, and bubblegum. The spices, though, are more prominent than the fruits, which I like.

Drinkability: This is a solid Bavarian hefe. Nothing spectacular or orgasmic, but it is very thirst quenching. I really wish I had poured it better.

Cloudy dark amber with a medium sized off-white colored head.

Smell is sweet with a mostly clove scent. Smells something like Clove cake.

Starts out mildly sweet with mostly clove and ginger flavor. Mildly flavored it could be stronger.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall frankly this is flavorless. Not something I would pay for again.

500 mL bottle,

A: Pours a dark hazy goldenrod with a fizzy white head. Poor retention for the style no lace.

S: Bubblegum esters, a hint of iron, and wheat.

T: Strong yeasty banana taste especially in the finish. Good complexity. Light notes of apple as well. Nice flavours.

M: Medium-bodied, nice structure. Biting, crisp carbonation.

O: A solid weissebier, easy drinking and refreshing. I've been wanting to try this for a while after seeing it in one of Michael Jackson's books, good stuff, glad it's finally in America.

Pours a hazy orangish golden color with a two finger white head. The aroma is of breadiness and banana with a hint of clove at the end. The taste has a wheat and breadiness backbone with a nice banana and slight citrus note in the middle. The end finishes with a floral clove flavor. The mouthfeel is moderate carbonation. Overall it is a solid hef but not best in class.

A: The pour is the typically hazy golden orange color with a couple fingers of white head.

S: Nice sweet banana bread aroma. Cloves give it a pleasant spice note which works very well with the banana and sweet malts. The base is the bready malt character, and there is just a touch of sweet apple.

T: Sweet apple, bread, and banana make up the bulk of the flavor. A nice wheat note to it with a hint of floral honey. The clove is more in the background but gives that familiar spice flavor to the beer.

M: Medium in body with a smooth, creamy carbonation.

O: Really a fantastic hefeweizen. Perhaps I should have picked up another one...

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a weizen glass.

Appearance: golden orange hue with plenty of haze and two thick fingers of pillowy ivory foam. It looks good, if a bit darker than I'm used to for a hefeweizen.

Smell: decent wheaty aroma which is alright but lacks any kind of interesting aroma like banana, clove or even citrus. I like the maltiness of it, but it's just not as complex as I like my weizens to be.

Taste: nice malty and wheaty flavor. There's a hint of light fruitiness that makes this beer tastier than the aroma, although it's still not as banana-ey as I like.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a good level of carbonation. It seems more crisp and effervescent than creamy, but that seems to work here.

Overall: I like this beer overall, but for me it doesn't really match the upper-tier German hefeweizens in bold aroma and complexity of flavor.

500 ml bottle poured into a weizen glass. The bubbly head is huge, but retention is disappointing. Scattered lacing atop the hazy orange body.

The requisite clove, bread, yeast and lemon are there, but everything seems rather muted, tired even. Perhaps an old bottle (and at this modest price point, I'm inclined to give it another chance). There's potential showing in the mild aromas and flavors, but the watery mouthfeel leaves much to be desired. More tame than bad, it pales in comparison to many of its Old World brethren.

This is a very good, but not great, hefeweizen.

Pale hazy amber (golden), with big pale tan head steadily shrinking to foamy ring and a few wisps of lace.

Aroma is very hefeweizen character of banana, moist bread, bread crust.

Taste is soft grain with bubblegum, crisp mineral, light zestiness. It is lightly sweet. It’s good, very much a hefeweizen, but not great or complex, fairly one-dimensional, even if the character is firm and holds up well.

A-Pours cloudy golden/orange with nearly an inch of fluffy off white head. Reduces slowly, leaving soapy lacing.

S-Heavy clove and banana aromas. Soft wheat/earthy notes.

T/M-Soft and light. Carbonation isn't as prickly as the average German hefe. The earthy wheat notes indicated in the nose are not as prominent in the flavor profile. Thin mouthfeel and a crisp finish.

500ml bottle.

Turbid, cloudy copper in color, a couple shades lighter than a dunkelweiss. Pours with a nice lasting head.

Yeasty dough, bubblegum and clove on the nose. Nice spicy phenols without much sweetness; a touch of banana and pear. Somewhat lactic, even, reminding me of sourdough bread.

Full, bready palate. Pear, banana and bubblegum sweetness lead into more tart, yeasty, lemony flavors mid-palate. A bit caramelized and bready toward the finish, with lingering clove and pepper spiciness. The mouthfeel becomes a bit thin in the finish, but that's my only real complaint with an otherwise great beer.

[Best served in a Weizen glass]

Poured dark murky orange with an average sized white creamy head that had fair lacing. The aroma was heavy with yeast, mild grain malt, a light citus hop with notes of banana, coriander and cloves. It tasted light, sweet and quite yeasty at first and finished with this light sweet-bitter acidic yeasty flavor with hints of citrus, spices and a touch of banana with the flavor lasting an average amount of time. Mouthfeel was light in body and watery in texture with a soft carbonation. Overall a nice light full flavored Hefeweizen.

.5L, Germany, best by May 2011.

Hazy straw-orange. Head is sub-par for the style: thin and short-lived.

The aroma is faint, but has some good banana and raw yeast character.

Flavor is boring and watery, but at least not offensive. Whereas a good Hefeweizen has bright, fruity and phenolic flavors, this beer has a dull, bready character, with a bit of tang thrown in for good measure. This style is all about the yeast, and I'm afraid the Maisel's strain forgot about flavor during fermentation. The mouthfeel is okay, but kind of chalky and watery. All in all, this is not so bad to drink, just very mediocre.

Note: I last reviewed this beer over two years ago following a buzzed afternoon in a Berlin biergarten. Though my palate has matured since then, this bottle did not even come close to what I experienced that late summer afternoon in 2008. Oh well. I guess it's better on-tap...

I picked up a bottle of this in Asheville a couple of days back. I've never heard of this beer or this brewery, but at $2.79 for a 500ml bottle, I couldn't pass it up.

Pouring a clear, golden orange with yellow gold highlights, there's a dense, off-white head that recedes to a ring, leaving no lace. The nose is decent. Mildly fruity, mildly metallic, mildly solvent-like and with some caramel, this is OK. That metallic/solvent character is distracting. As it breathes, it does die off a little bit, allowing some clove and banana to come through. Not particularly expressive.

The palate is significantly better. Spiced bananas drizzled with honey, this is decent. Of course, there's clove, but this also has a little holiday spice. Very slick on the palate, this has plenty of wheat-like dextrins, coating the palate without being sweet. Not particularly yeasty, there's a touch of metallic character on the finish. Mildly sweet and mildly fruity, this is decent. While medium-light, this really coats the palate. Carbonation is medium-low, which is also rather unconventional. Decent.

A: on the darker side of Hefeweizens, cloudy with a huge fluffy white head. Murky orange brown in color.

S: Super hearty yeast, hint of lemon.

T: Perfect fullness for a Hefeweizen, and perfect degree of sweetness as well. The yeast is so well blended as a flavor in the beer. Tastes like it contains lemon already.

M: Relatively smooth and heavy with extremely mild carbonation.

D: This is a fantastic Hefeweizen. Hearty and well balanced.

Super traditional Weizen Beer from the Bayreuth region of Bavaria.
Pours a super murky orange, tan unfiltered apple cider color. The light tan thick foamy crown is really beautiful to behold. Picture Perfect Hefeweisse.
Smells of apple, nutmeg, brown sugar, caramel, a heavy hand of banana ( a key point for me), nutmeg, raisin, vanilla, cider tartness comes out and becomes more prevalent as the beer warms, cutting through the original sweet impression. Grains, musty wheat, tart citrus come into play as well. Overall a really good to great Hefe nose, touching in the upper echelons of Weihenstephan or Ayinger. after living in Munich for a year and studying brewing, it tends to set high standard.
Onto the first sip--wow-first reaction. Banana, clove, pepper, cider, apple, fermented pear, tingling fresh black pepper, light vanilla, bread, maltiness akin to molasses, orange, wheat comes into play. Flavor is one of the best Ive ever had.
Mouthfeel is medium, thick and tart and refreshing all in one. Thick, creamy, fruity, yet tart, refreshing and biting-the perfect Hefe. This small Brewery from Bayreuth has made a Hefe on par with the bigger and more famous Weihenstephaner and Schneider Weisse. A truly great Hefe--great brew, hence my high rating

Hazy orange body with a small head and no lacing. Constant layer of bubbles and foam on surface initially, but settles in eventually.

Estery aroma of bananas not as much clove detected. Very sweet smelling. A little bit of malt and wheat too.

Good tasting beer. Same flavors as nose. A little bland overall but not bad.
