I just wrote a nice review and it was erased because beeradvocate wanted me to login after the review and the entire form was gone when I did that. It was not my first review of the night either, total bummer. Sorry for the terse secondary response. But I do not feel like doing that again right now. I will write this again another time. But a nice bar, so I felt the need to rate this before I forgot.

One of my favorite places in Portland. They look after the beer exceptionally well. The beer menu itself is a bit much, but that seems to be the norm in Portland, and their basic list behind the bar is easy to navigate. Great atmosphere, spoilt only by bright lights and parents with children during the early evening. They could perhaps ask families to leave by, say, five o'clock so that serious and lonely drinkers could sit there in the contemplative silence that a bar like this could then achieve with zen to spare. Expect nothing of the food menu beyond typical English food and you will not be disappointed. Somerset would be proud.

Wonderful, relaxed vibe at The Moon And Sixpence. It clearly had a locals feel, with British focus on the ale selection of course. It wasn't terribly nice inside but it had a perfect, relaxed feel that I love in a pub. A few older gentlemen were playing chess, a few reading newspapers in solitude with a pint, and it wasn't noisy at all. I loved that I didn't have to endure loud televisions or loud music. Bravo.
Prices were within reason for Portland area. Convenient location with a bus stop almost right out in front. If they could upgrade some of the interior decor, flooring, etc. this would really be a gem.

What this place loses in vibe from the outside is made up within. Cozy little pub that is a tad hard to find but maybe that is what keeps it a bit of a secret. They have a handful of nice craft taps and I wen up there to get a Black Butte XXI. They have a few dart boards, very nice servers, and a cool menu. It's a nice little spot for a post date drink where you can actually hear the person with you talking. If I lived closer I would definitely be a regular up there, and I wish there were more places like this in Portland. Understated is good.

OK, all you who didn't give Moon and Sixpence an A+ because of the smoking: there is now NO smoking in bars, pubs, whatever in Oregon. Moon and Sixpence has wonderful beer: Ninkasi and Double Mountain, two of the best, seemingly always one of these on tap, and always several cask ales, including from the above two breweries. The atmosphere is authentic British.
The Saturday 4:00 jazz session we heard was wonderful - very classic Django Reinhardt Gypsy Jazz, I am told. And they don't get paid - they are pros (mostly) in town who do this for fun.
All of you non-smokers (I also) come back next time you are in town. Horse Brass is also very good for serious beer, but Moon and Sixpence has just a slight edge in friendly service, and isn't quite as "grungy" (in a good way).

I stopped in on a business trip to Portland. Very nice atmosphere. When you step in, it's like stepping into England (well, an English pub anyway). It's well worn but that isn't a detraction. The decor is very authentic with a comfortable bar, darts, and simple wooden tables, benches and booths.
They have a great selection of local beers on tap (including a few on cask) as well as many British and Belgian bottles. I had a cask conditioned Ninkasi Tricerihops DIPA. It was very good.
The only negative for me was the smoke. I know it's a pub but as a non-smoker, it was a bit overwhelming.
I look forward to another visit. This is a great place to have a beer, relax and let the day disappear.
