Light ruby color with a 3/4" head that leaves lots of thin webby lacing.
The nose is absolutely gorgeous. It's comparable to sticking ones nose into a jar of fresh hops. It's mostly fruity.
The taste isn't as wonderful as the smell suggests. It's bland and the hops are more like prunes than citrus fruit. While I could smell this one all day, I'd rather just buy a bag of hops.
Not too great but glad I got to try it. I enjoyed New Glarus' Imperial IPA quite a bit more. Maybe this one just wasn't fresh? I'll have to try it again to see.

New Glarus Brewery
I get an immediate hop smack in the face as soon as the bottle is cracked open. Hop Hearty poured amber with a slight haze from the bottle conditioning. A 1+ finger dense craggy off white head formed on the pour. There's very few carbonation bubbles rising to that tightly packed head. Thick drink lines after each sip.
This beer has a solid caramel backbone but the main aspect is the bountiful hop bouquet. Citric hops lead the way in the form of sweetened grapefruit along with a squeeze or two of orange. Pine needles are also a welcome addition. Mild but noticeable alcohol fumes rise through the air adding a nice complexity to things.
That caramel maltiness leads the way along with a mildly toasted malt. Hops quickly take over but are more of a flavor complexity than a bittering component. Piney hops show up first but are soon matched by sweetened grapefruit and orange juice. The pine needle hoppiness shows up again on the backend and leaves a nice moderate bitterness. Nice balance, leaning to the hoppier side but more balanced and flavorful than most.
Medium bodied with a prickly carbonation on the swallow. Lively mouthfeel with enough bitterness to keep you wanting more. Slightly drying on the finish.
I could drink and drink and keep on drinking Hop Hearty. This beer has the ability to make you want another drink immediately after the last.
Hop Hearty is one of my favorite IPAs. If this was available in Illinois it would be constantly stocked in my fridge. A wonderful drink from New Glarus. I'm sure getting it straight from the brewery doesn't hurt the quality either.
