February 2009 bottle
A- Pours a good three finger-width tan head on a black beer. Average head retention for the style, minimal lacing.
S- Aroma is of a normal weiss, bananas and cloves, but seemingly with a touch of roastiness. Maybe it's just my sniffer playing tricks on me?
T- Lots of bananas going on in the taste. Slight oxidation. The roasted notes that seemed to be present in the nose are gone but there is a licorice sensation fills my olfactory system after each sip.
M- Medium mouthfeel, lower end of carbonation.
D/O- Overall I did enjoy the over two and a half year old dunkel offering from New Glarus. It is starting to shows signs of going south but as for now is still a quite drinkable brew. Thanks again to TATURBO's cellar for not letting this beer see the light for a few years.

Pours a deep, dark chocolate/chestnut brown color with slight golden brown edges and a frothy beige head. Good retention, slowly fading into a thick lasting ring that leaves chunks of lacing behind.
Interesting aroma with characteristics of a wheat beer as well as some sweet, darker malts. Zesty spice notes, especially pepper and clove along with bready yeast, caramel and chocolate malt.
Medium bodied and fuller than expected with a toasted malt presence up front with hints of chocolate, toffee and caramel. There's also a heavy spice presence with lots of zesty, peppery clove and cinnamon. Bready yeast and pretty heavy for the style. Subtle bitterness and a dry finish.

Bottle: Poured a hazy dark brown color dunkel with a large foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of caramelized malt with light notes of cloves and some residual sugar. Taste is also an enjoyable mix between a solid caramel malt backbone with nice ester of cloves and light banana bread with a well balance sweet finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Well brewed though more ester originating from the yeast strain could have provided further enjoyment.

Deep coffee brown. Some red along the edges. Tanned crfeamy head. Reduces to a thin cap. Small laces that dont stick much.
Roasted barley gives some dark chocolate, coffee, and some smokiness. Banana Bread and clove. Fig and caramel. A touch of herbal lemon grass.
Drinks like a big hearty hefewiess: refreshing, crisp, grassy lemon and wheat. But with a roasted dark chocolate and toasted caramel backing. Clove, some smoke, and banana bread also push through. Light bitterness.
Crisp yet semi-rich. refreshing with some drying at the end. medium body and carbonation. Could maybe benefit from a bit more body.
Drinks very light and sessionable. But with lots of complexity and interesting flavors.

Thanks to Beerwolf77 for this one. Procurer of obscure Midwestern beers!! Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Harpoon Pilsner glass.
A: Gentle pour yields a monstrous powdery 4 finger light grayish-brown head with moderate retention. Beer is a surprising, opaque black. Lacing is spotty and with poor cling.
S: Nose is roasted malt, toffee, caramel, and brown sugar. Sweet overall and just a bit tart in the back. Subtle but tickles the nose.
T: Opens roasted malt and caramel. Toffee in the back gives this one a warming sensation. Subtly sour in the middle with some brown sugar. Sweetens towards the end. Liquorice and brownie. Finish is cocoa and aftertaste is sweet.
M: Light to medium bodied, decently carbonated and lively and prickly on the tongue and palate. Goes down rather warmly. Finishes messy with an aftertaste that doesn't linger.
D: A moderately complex brew that's very very easy to drink. Light bodied and robust flavor. Would make a terrific session beer as the Fall turns into winter. Possesses a warming quality and one could nurse a couple of bottles all night long.

Pours a very dark brown with a good light tan head. The nose brings some really nice weizen characteristics of banana and clove along with some light chocolate. The taste is a bit of darker malt, chocolate, and then banana and clove. Really quite tasty. Good feel and carbonation. Drinks quite well.

Appearance: Fudgy chocolate color with a large tan head that slides down the side without leaving much behind
Smell: Banana spice bread, pecans and milk chocolate
Taste: Bitter nut skins dominate the banana spice and chocolate flavors, up front, with a spicy rye tartness that grows by mid-palate; after the swallow, the milk chocolate emerges as does the cinnamon and cloves, though the nut skin bitterness wraps up the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Drinkability: Discovered this one at the back of my fridge so it is not the freshest; still, a decent beer and I have given it the benefit of the doubt to account for the age

Notes from 4/23/10 tasting; bottle poured to pint glass.
A-jet black, but thin, not syrupy, chocolate brown foamy head that settled to thin layer
S--roast malt aroma, straw, caramel, clove, some banana
T--toasted coffee and cinnamon taste, tradition Weisse taste but low yeast impact, lots of roasted malt to compliment
M--high carbonation and smooth, rich mouthfeel
D--great beer in a style I don't care for-very unique and tasty though

Pours a dark brown with reddish hues and a thin head a bit of lace. Smell is mostly roasted malt with some earthy scents. Taste is of roasted malts and wheat with some other earthy tones. Mouth feel is medium with maybe a bit too much fiz. Drinkability is just ok.

A-pours a creamy khaki colored head that has some retention and leaves no lace. the beer is a cloudy dark mahogony, very pure color.
S-the nose brings a wild yeast, some toasted malts, earthy tones, and a touch of licorice.
T/M-very smooth and creamy, good solid medium body, big flavors, a touch of wild belgian yeast and clove starts off with some sweet dark cherry, a toasted malt blends in with a nice smokiness, done very well.
D-extremely easy going down and big malt flavors with a nice mix of malty sweetness. very impressive, could become a big fan of this style!

Presentation: 12oz brown pop top with classy NG label; no freshness date to be found. The label says this is brewed with oats, rye, barley, and wheat.
Appearance: Very dark brown beer, nearly black, with a big dark ivory cream cap which soon fades to a thick, lasting film and ring.
Smell: Some really nice (and unexpected) dark toasted grains here, dark caramel, toasted bread, and some dark fruitiness. Maybe just a HINT of cinnamon sugar. Just a ghost of booziness maybe. Surprisingly absent are any banana/clove notes. Still, very nice.
Taste: Lightly roasted barley is right up front; this is actually kind of like a mild stout or deeply toasty/roasty brown porter with a big kick of twangy wheat. Some dry chocolate notes as well. Just a HINT of spice from the yeast.
Mouthfeel: This is the one downside of this beer; it's just a bit thin.
Conclusion: Unexpected/slightly unusual take on the style; quite nice nevertheless. Too bad this one's been taken out of rotation. Glad I got to try it.

One of the last few I have left in my mix 6er from the Brat Stop! Im in heaven.
Appearance- Pours deeeep brown, nearly opaque, with some garnet highlights. Thick, almost creamy, tight, light tan head towers up to about 3 fingers.
Aroma- Spicy yeast notes mingle with soft roastiness/dark caramel, light molasses, and maybe even hints of chocolate and crisp wheat. Very unique aroma. Rich, but light.
Flavor- Starts off like a wheat beer- light, effervescent, and crisp. Quickly opens into a slightly unfamiliar beast- wheat brew qualities remain but a delicious roastiness quickly fills the mouth bringing light molasses flavors with it. Crisp wheat comes back with some yeasty, fruity, and herbal hop notes to finish. Very complex and leaves a nice complex malty, almost silky finish that lingers. Rye additions provide a nice crispness.
Mouthfeel- Almost stinging CO2. Slightly sticky with a low-moderate amount of residual sugars. Very complex, but quite drinkable. Almost schwartz beer-esque in that its dark and complex, but not so much that it kills the drinkability factor.
Overall- Fun beer that is almost like superimposing the malty qualities of a roasty oatmeal/rye stout onto a refreshing wheat brew. Pretty darn tasty, and definitely worth a try! Dont think I have had anything quite like this yet!

12 oz. bottle poured to a tall weizen glass. This bottle came to Portland via ClubberLang back in November; sorry we couldn't meet up, Brent, but thanks for the kind gesture.
Jets/Bengals game just kicking off...in hindsight, maybe should have saved this 'til tomorrow's Packers-Cardinals clash...
A: Not quite 'black' but certainly a very deep brown, darker than the bottle, though showing highlights of a similar tone. Tough to see much inside; it's a cloudy murkiness where only a few tiny threads of carbonation are evident. Thick three-finger head of light tan foam, fizzling down to a nubby cream, leaving lace in tiny dollops.
S: Awww, terrific aroma! Light fudgy chocolate, tons of fruit (raisins, prunes, dates), finishing earthy-sweet spices (clove and cinnamon/nutmeg). I keep going back for a sniff, even when I'm not wanting to take a sip.
T: With the aroma, one gets a preview of the taste: plenty of cocoa/chocolate roast, a tangy/spiced sweet maltiness, evolving dark fruits flavors (carob, date, raisin and a hint of orange peel). Roast pecan nuttiness and a sly caramel sugar mixed with all that I just described. Even a touch peaty...or is that 'meaty'?
M: A little slick and lighter on the carbonation than I figured; having a bottling/best by date would help with any suspicions I'm having. Still it's silkier smoothness isn't a setback and there's still a decent prickle and some lengthy roasted bittersweetness in this medium-bodied brew. Finest grainy film lingers, malt stickiness on the lips.
D: For whatever reason, I didn't find this all that 'drinkable'; it was both slow going down (a sipper - 12 oz. lasted the better part of an hour) and the flavors weren't quite working for me in a 'must have again' kind of way (though maybe I need another, just to be sure...). Love the aroma though, and it's definitely interesting enough to recommend.

T - sweet malt ending, chocolate and some smokiness

Pour is almost black with a creamy white head. No lacing to speak of. Aroma is lots of roasted malt, along with some coffee, fudge, and cocoa. Taste is more of the same. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth (carbonation is closer to soda water than beer though), although I don't find it very drinkable, possibly due to personal preference. After reading the reviews I do detect a bit of banana nut bread.

Reviewed on 09/10/2009. Bottle thanks to FlssmrBrewAlum. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, roasted nuts, lots of spices (clove, pepper), and crackery malt. Flavor of roasted and crackery malt, lots of roasted nuts, with a background of light spices. Nice and drinkable, certainly one of my favorite dunkelweizens.

a: pours a black color with about a full inch of beer that disappears quickly leaving a good amount of lace on the top of the beer as well as around the edge of the glass

Courtesy of caresville. 12oz. bottle served in a weizen glass. Poured the color of cola with a cascading, root beer float-like four inch, khaki-colored head. Tiny honeycombs were revealed below the cap as it slowly receded, with copious, tiny, delicate strands of lacing being exposed above the cap line. Interesting nose - a little smoky, roasty, dark fruit. Taste consistent with nose, with the addition of a cocoa quality, as well as a touch of clove. Mouthfeel is light in texture, but there is definitely some body here. Carbonation is smooth, light and even. This is a very interesting and complex Dunkel. I'm really digging this brew, and it is just a little off-center from the traditional style. Well worth your time.

A nice thick chewy Dunkle. Impressive head atop a very dark walnut brown cloudy brew. Decent retention fades to nothing. Nice bits of lace here and there. Pretty bubbly in the glass.
Smell has dark fruitiness, overripe banana, and coffee. Cloves with a burnt sugary sweetness and dark wheat malt. The rye pokes through as well. Smoke.
Taste is full of raisins, banana and a lot of charcoal smoked coffee. Caramelish sweetness flowing through. This beer has a deeply roasted flavor that is accentuated by the rye in the mix. Finish is clean with a firm bitterness and sour apple and wheat twang. Roasted grains and graham linger with more coffee. A slight warming touch. Feel is thick and chewy for this style. A nice active carbonation breaks it up and keeps it refreshing and satisfying.
Quite drinkable. A good fall quaffer for after the yard work.
I really like what NG does with wheat beers. All have great and artfully done malts and their yeast strains are top notch. A primo wheat brewery!

Poured into a weizen glass with the yeast from the bottom of the bottle swirled and poured into the glass. Amazingly thick, rich head formed -- a full three fingers with a moderately careful pour. The head is very stiff and billowy with tan latte color. The color is black. if you hold it to the light and look through the edges of the glass, you see a bit of deep brown, but it really black. Very nice appearance beer.
Aroma is complex. There's roasted malts, wheat, yeast, cloves, and just a hint of banana. Excellent and brewed to style.
Flavor and mouthfeel of this beer matches up with the aroma. First flavor is chocolate and slightly sweet banana followed by the clove and yeast spiciness. I get the wheat at the finish, balancing it all out. This has a thick luxurious mouthfeel with an effervescent carbonation.
I enjoyed everything about this beer. Wonderful to have on a slightly cool autumn night. Like so many New Glarus beers, this one's a real winner.

Pours brown/black with thin tan head. Surprisingly wheat only aroma with very little roasted/spicy/rye aroma. Sweet wheat flavor with the mouthfeel of heavier malts. Spicy, smokey and deep. Good complexity. Gives a warth that resides. A very good beer, but not a staple for me.

Pours a dark black color. One and one quarter inch head of a pale tan color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of slight roasted malt, sweet malt, yeast, banana, and clove. Fits the style of a Dunkelweizen. Mouth feel is smooth and sharp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of roasted malt up front, then slight hops, spice, slight hops, and some slight citrus notes in the finish. Overall, complex, well blended, nice bodied, and a good aroma.

I drank this from a bottle into a chalice.
This beer pours a dark black with a light tan creamy head. The head is about 2 inches and has some decent retention lasting about 3 minutes then forms a soapy head. There is some watery lacing, but nothing special.
The aroma of the beer is a little to light but what you can get is some roasted chocolate, spices, and maybe some caramel.
The taste is great it starts off with some chocolate, has a nice warm body and sticks to your tongue. As you finish there is a distint hint of wheat and a nice lasting flavor. This beer is great, but lacks a little on drinkability.

S: Apple skins, bubblegum & peppery rye??
T: Roasty malt, orchard fruit, a touch of licorice & booze notes up front. Wet charred grain, a touch of smokeyness, dryness & pear are all there as this warms. Finishes fruitty & dry with a touch of booze
MF: Medium bodied with low carbonation
Drinks fairly easy, not bad, but not as good as I hoped...
