Pours dark brown with ruby tones in colour with light tan one finger head. Smell - roasted malts and dark chocolate. Very nice aroma. Taste - roast malts once again, some chocolate and caramel, bitternes coming from alcohol. Interesting and complex taste. Mouthfeel - rich, pretty smooth. Alcohol is slightly noticable, so drinkability is not as high as it could have been. Overall - very interesting solid brew.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with iconic green/gold branded pry-off pressure cap and generally appealing label design acquired in a trade with the very gracious Duff27 and served into a Spaten stangenglas in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. I'm really excited for this one; New Glarus is easily in my top 10 breweries (thanks in large part to Duff27's trades over the years). Reviewed live, as a bock (because the label clearly identifies it as such). No ABV is listed on the bottle.
Served cold - straight from the fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.
Pours a pretty standard bock head - one finger in width. It's white-khaki in colour and of decent thickness. Little creaminess. Not particularly frothy or healthy looking. Complexion and consistency could be better. Head retention is above average - about 3-4 minutes. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.
Body colour is a rich transparent translucent auburn that has a nice glow to it when backlit, but isn't horribly vibrant. It's a clean appearance: no yeasty sediment or floating particles are visible.
Overall, it's not a great appearance for a bock (or a beer in general), but there are no egregious flaws and it's above average I suppose. Not a unique or special appearance by any means, but I'm optimistic.
Sm: Rich bock malts are abundant in the aroma. It's got a strong (and seemingly sweet) malty backbone. Brown bread crust/bready malts. A dash of caramel. Buried hints of dark fruit (plum I guess?), toffee, and chocolate. It's a plump appealing aroma of mild strength, but I do worry about the obvious sweetness - which may be too much.
There's no overt hop profile to speak of, no is there any detectable yeast character. While true to style, it doesn't have the general character of a German yeast.
The fruity notes develop as the beer comes to temperature. I haven't had many bocks with this fruity an aroma; I'm intrigued.
No alcohol or other off-notes are noticeable.
T: Has a prominent though well-rounded malty sweetness, with notes of bread crust, caramel, brown malts, and some amber malts. The hops offer no contest to the malts here, but as sweet as the beer is I don't find it too imbalanced. The fruitiness is just as powerful (for a bock) here as it was on the aroma; I pick up plum mainly, seconded by some fleeting cherry notes. There's also a light, subtle maple tone. The chocolate found in the aroma is nowhere to be had here, which may actually be a good thing.
It's got above average complexity for a bock, but isn't real subtle or intricate. The fruit lends it some nuance; it's not the same build as most other beers in the style. Above average depth of flavour. Average duration and intensity of flavour.
No yeast character or alcohol comes through in the taste. None of the coffee mentioned on the label is coming through for me.
Mf: Filling and medium-bodied, with an apt weight and presence on the palate given the style. It's smooth, wet, and very approachable. A bit overcarbonated, perhaps, but the texture complements the taste well - mostly by staying out of the way and sticking to simplicity. It isn't the meal-in-a-glass of many bocks.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, harsh, astringent, or rough.
Dr: Absolutely a downable drinkable bock if I've ever had one. But it's not as successful a take on a traditional style as New Glarus' many superior beers. It's an inspired take on a bock, but it just doesn't come together as well as most of New Glarus' lineup. Still, it's one of the better bocks I've tried in recent memory, and may well be amongst the best American bocks I've had. I'm glad I got to try it. If I was lucky enough to just come across it on the shelf at a bottle shop, I'd happily pick up a six pack of it to try again.
Likable but far from a stylistic paragon.
