Appearance: Coffee Stout pours a nearly black color. The head is quite craggy, with pockets forming here and there.

Smell: The aroma is very laid back, with mild notes of coffee.

Taste: The beer's taste is mellow as well, although it becomes more complex as it warms. For something named Coffee Stout, the coffee flavor is subdued. However, this is not a complaint, seeing as the taste is quite pleasant. It's kind of like a milk/sweet stout with a pinch of coffee.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the lighter side for a stout, but still smooth a slightly creamy. It manages to not be at all heavy, while still being substantial.

Drinkability: Very, very drinkable for a coffee stout. This is because the coffee aspect is not overwhelming in this beer, which means the bitterness level is relatively low.

Notes: Wow, New Glarus really can succeed at brewing anything. This was the first New Glarus stout I've tried, and I admit I was a little skeptical that this beer could live up to my high expectations for any New Glarus beer, since the brewery is known more for its wheat and fruit beers.

My worries have been alleviated! New Glarus has crafted a coffee stout that is a nice change of pace from the big and bad coffee stouts that define the style. I love pretty much any stout that has coffee, but never has there been one so drinkable. Coffee Stout stands out for being mild and easy going, but still plenty flavorful. Think of it as coffee with a little cream and sugar instead of coffee black.

Poured from bottle into tulip snifter, served near (but not at) room temperature.

This stout pours a deep, opaque sienna. The head is beige and creamy; quite enticing. Coats the inside of the glass.

Smells faintly of coffee, as well as caramelized malts. Not as deep and rich of a smell as the appearance might suggest.

Tastes stronger than it smells. The coffee notes really come through, though not in an overpowering manner. Thick mouth feel. Coats the mouth the same way it does the glass.

Finishes fairly clean, with the coffee lingering only slightly.

Overall, this is an excellent beer. It combines excellent balance with an understated sophistication. I rate it as comparable to Founders Breakfast Stout, though the two are quite distinct.
