Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall New Glarus Signature Pilsner Glass.
Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of tan head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of creamy lacing around the glass.
Smell: A dark roasted and fairly sweet coffee infused aroma. Dark roasted malts with good hints of coffee, chocolate, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, cereal grains, biscuit, milk, and nuts. Some fairly sharp hints of smoke and wood as well. Sweet burnt sugars add some more sweetness with a little vanilla. Subtle hints of grassy hops in the background. A pretty solid sweet stout aroma.
Taste: Like the nose hints, a dark roasty stout that leans towards the sweet side. Sweet dark roasted malts with notes of coffee, chocolate, burnt caramel, toffee, toast, cereal grains, biscuit, lactose milk, and nuts. Mlats are rounded out by a nice taste of smoke and wood. Sweet burnt sugar and a little vanilla. Hop presence is pretty tame with a little earthy grass towards the finish. Definitely on the sweet dark malty side. Pretty solid.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely creamy, slick, and smooth. Not overly syrupy.
Overall: A pretty solid coffee beer. Definitely not thick like an imperial stout. Its more like a sweet/milk stout, but a pretty good one.

Poured from bottle into tulip snifter, served near (but not at) room temperature.
This stout pours a deep, opaque sienna. The head is beige and creamy; quite enticing. Coats the inside of the glass.
Smells faintly of coffee, as well as caramelized malts. Not as deep and rich of a smell as the appearance might suggest.
Tastes stronger than it smells. The coffee notes really come through, though not in an overpowering manner. Thick mouth feel. Coats the mouth the same way it does the glass.
Finishes fairly clean, with the coffee lingering only slightly.
Overall, this is an excellent beer. It combines excellent balance with an understated sophistication. I rate it as comparable to Founders Breakfast Stout, though the two are quite distinct.
