A: Pours a deep brown, which is very dark with very little visibility through it. An inch and a half of off white head sit on top of this beer.

S: Smells like bitter roasted coffee beans with some hints of vanilla.

T: Roasted malt on the front of this flavor. What really surprised me was the lingering finish. It begins as a bitterness of roasted malt and coffee beans but finishes with a dark fruit sweetness and a little bit of nuttiness. It is very pleasing.

M: Full bodied, and very creamy due to the carbonation. This beer has a nice long finish.

D: I know this doesn't fit the traditional definition of a "Session" ale I think this beer is very sessionable. I really enjoyed the flavor and it didn't exhaust my palate. I could drink quite a few of these.

12oz bottle poured into a goblet.

Very dark black color with a caramel colored head which lingers around the edges of the glass.

Scent is nutty, with a nice amount of coffee.

Very light in the mouth with a good amount of coffee bitter in the taste. Has a small amount of carbonation. Coffee flavor is up front and then lingers lightly on the tongue.

Very drinkable as an after dinner drink, I could drink this at any point in the year because of how light it feels while drinking!

A - Pitch black, no light getting through even around the edges. Beige head builds up nicely and lingers, leaving ample lacing.

S - A bit of coffee, but not as much as I expected. Smells a touch acrid, with some roasted grains, charcoal and oak aromas rounding it out

T - Coffee is again pretty mild, but you can tell it's there. Some candied dark fruits come through more so than in the aroma, along with some dark tobacco cigar type flavors

M - About what you'd expect for a medium ABV stout, smooth and only slightly viscous, just light enough to make it sessionable

O - A solid, drinkable stout that I could (and will proceed to) session. This would make an interesting Imperial stout if it was beefed up. Come to think of it, When is the last time New Glarus made anything stout-related on the thumbprint series??? It would be nice to see them go nuts and make a monster stout.

My first review. Rode the bike to Wisconsin and picked up a variety of New Glarus.

Appearance: Nice dark black coffee color with a nice head.
Smell: Ok to very good.
Taste: Not truly a stout, but more of a porter. Very nice taste.
Overall: Highly recommended.

A: Pour is espresso black with a two finger black head that leaves behind some lace.

S: Aromas of coffe, chocalte malt and a little roast.

T: Taste is light coffee, hint of chocate, roasted malt with a mild bitter finish.

m: Decent carbonation, medium body and a little oily.

O: A nice light stout that has some porter like characteristics and worth trying again. reminds me of another light coffee stout that I enjoy and that is Fuel Cafe from Lakefront brewery also from Wisconsin.

The beer comes in a black color with hints of brown in the light. The head comes in a light brown foamy head.

The aroma immediately smells like a porter. It has milk chocolate, semi sweet chocolate, lightly roasted malt, a bit of coffee, hints of dark fruit, and some hops in the back.

The flavor follows in the of milk chocolate with a bit of sweetness, a robust roasted malt, creaminess, a bit of lightly roasted coffee, some dark fruit, and then an earthy bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium and quite full for a beer at a 5.75% ABV.

The beer tastes almost nothing like “coffee” nor “stout,” but intstead literally like a porter. And for that, it is a good one at that. If one wants their roasted malt fix at a smaller ABV, then this is a very good brew.

12oz bottle pored into a pint glass.
L: nice khaki head 1-2" with a dark brown/black color. On the this side for a stout.
S: malty smell some coffee, but not over powering.
T: Sweeter than I expected. Nice hints of chocolate and non-bitter coffee. Pretty mellow for a stout.
F: thin for a stout and a bit much carbonation for a stout.
O: As I finish this first bottle I realize this is a very drinkable beer, different than my first impression.
