12oz brown bottle with a bottle code that I can't decipher. No freshness date.

Thin layer of tan head holds its own and leaves some lacing on the glass. Opaque brown with amber hues when brought up to the light. Beautiful aroma of fresh brewed ice coffee with a bit of maltiness around the roasted edges. Big smoothness surrounds the medium body. Coffee flavors comes in slow but becomes a dominant flavor middle to end. I swear this is just a glass of really good carbonated ice coffee with a bit of maltose for sweetener. ;-) Modested hopping. The malt sweetness is pushed back down by the roasted grain and coffee flavors. Finishes semi-sweet with a mildly bitter coffee bean flavor.

Hands down this is the most drinkable coffee beer I have had to date. Not as dark as I expected but packed with a pleasant coffee tone throughout that plays well with the beer. We have a great beer here people.

A very disappointing beer from New Glarus. I really want to like this. I wanted to like it the last time it was released. I’ve tried it over and over again but to no avail. I just have to admit that this beer is simply no good.

Darkish brown with a bubbly but short lasting brown head that dissipates to nothing in a less than a minute. Thin looking. Aroma of iron, stale weak coffee, oats and malt. Front is a blast of stale coffee, middle has some weak roasted malts that seem a bit off, finish is metallic and down right nasty. Light bodied and watery. If this had been released in July as some sort of Summertime stout, that would have been one thing but now? When it’s 35 below (It really was yesterday) I don’t want to be drinking a watery stout, especially one that tastes somewhat nasty.

This was one of the singles that I picked up on my "make a six" fest at Steve's Liquors in Madison.

A: Reddish black. Very thick and dark - barely a bit of ruby red coming through on the edges against the light. Creamy tan finger head that dissipated to a spotty dusting but delivered some nice lacing.

S: Really lovely burnt/roasty malt, coffee and bitter cocoa.

T: Much like the smell. A really nice, simple pleasure. No bells and whistles. Just nicely done. Could have given more but I can't say it was badly lacking. I did expect the coffee to be dialed up a bit. That may be may main complaint considering it's in the name. As it warmed, there was definitely more coffee bite that made it into the finish and aftertaste but the coffee flavor remained mild but tasty.

M: Medium mouthfeel - much lighter than I expected. Low carbonation but quite active on the tongue. Pretty smooth in general, especially as it warmed.

D: I have a great deal of respect for New Glarus. This is a solid beer that I would drink on a regular basis if it was available to me. Not dynamite but just well done and appealed to the balance I like in a basic stout.

Pours pitch black with a thick tan head. Aroma of coffee and sugary vanilla. Surprisingly, medium bodied, flavors of roast coffee explode first, then give way to malt sweetness at mid-tongue, and finishes again with coffee and slightly burnt flavors. I would consider this the perfect example of a coffee stout.

Pours into my glass a black hue with dark brown edges and a fizzy, bubbly light tan head on top of the brew. Aromas start off with roasted malts and a sturdy brewed coffee. Some cocoa and some burnt, toasty notes are in there as well. Just a touch of hops. Good stuff.

First sip brings a roasty dark malt that's followed by a nice roasted coffee flavor along with hints of cocoa and a sorta sweet creaminess. A touch of caramel flows down with a slightly burnt toast aspect. Finishes with a touch of hops. Tasty brew overall.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side for a stout, more along the lines of a porter or black bier to me. Good carbonation brings in some creaminess. This one is almost too easy to drink. In the end it's a tasty coffee brew that doesn't ever get too overpowering with the coffee flavors. Worth checking out.

Twelve ounce bottle pours a deep brown body, opaque in the glass with a tall and creamy khaki head. Excellent retention and lots of splotchy lacing.

Aroma has an almond nuttiness, with notes of milk choclate, coffee, and citrusy hops.

Medium body has an appropriate low medium carbonation.

Coffee shows up more in the taste, but is still somewhat subtle. Chocolate and roasty notes share the spotlight with hints of citrusy hops and nuttiness in the background.

Don't know if there's actually coffee in this one but it's quite well done. Another excellent offering from New Glarus.

Thanks to kmpitz2 for another midwest treat...
Dark brown in color...bordering black but some light is able to pass thru along the edges.
Two fingers of light tan head...aerated and full of life, but fades to a thin skimming after a couple minutes...very spotty lacing.
Mostly yeast in the nose...some caramel, chocolate and very little coffee.
Mildly roasted coffee does make its way into the taste, thankfully. Too bad it is the only highlight of this beer. Besides the coffee, its fairly bland in all other aspects when I put it against other coffee stouts I've had.
Thin mouthfeel...more closely resembling a porter. I am not too surprised, as I was underwhelmed when I had the Cherry Stout...both good beers in themselves, but hard to rate higher then slightly above average.

Pours out black with a tan head, retention is pretty good, some lacing. Smell is of roasted coffee and chocolate, no hops in the nose. Taste starts of a bit bitter from roastiness and then becomes more chocolate-y with a roasted finish. Higher on carbonation, but not harsh, lighter side of medium bodied, dry finish. Overall I really liked this and will be drinking plenty while it's still around.

poured from a bottle that was aged for one year, under refrigeration.

poured into snifter, had a nice creamy off white/tan head that quickly disappeared into tiny bubbles clinging to side of glass.

smell was coffee, caramel, and alcohol. not sure of the alcohol content but smells like it's above 6%.

taste was brown sugar on the tip of tounge, and a nice coffee finish. suprisingly very smooth for the alcohol aroma.

Not a huge fan of all stouts but this one was really good, very well balanced, with a very slight hoppiness to help with the sweetness of the malt. The guys at New Glarus really know what they're doing!! This beer is great for a cool autumn night here in CLEVELAND.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall New Glarus Signature Pilsner Glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of tan head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A dark roasted and fairly sweet coffee infused aroma. Dark roasted malts with good hints of coffee, chocolate, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, cereal grains, biscuit, milk, and nuts. Some fairly sharp hints of smoke and wood as well. Sweet burnt sugars add some more sweetness with a little vanilla. Subtle hints of grassy hops in the background. A pretty solid sweet stout aroma.

Taste: Like the nose hints, a dark roasty stout that leans towards the sweet side. Sweet dark roasted malts with notes of coffee, chocolate, burnt caramel, toffee, toast, cereal grains, biscuit, lactose milk, and nuts. Mlats are rounded out by a nice taste of smoke and wood. Sweet burnt sugar and a little vanilla. Hop presence is pretty tame with a little earthy grass towards the finish. Definitely on the sweet dark malty side. Pretty solid.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely creamy, slick, and smooth. Not overly syrupy.

Overall: A pretty solid coffee beer. Definitely not thick like an imperial stout. Its more like a sweet/milk stout, but a pretty good one.

L: nice khaki head 1-2" with a dark brown/black color. On the this side for a stout.
S: malty smell some coffee, but not over powering.
T: Sweeter than I expected. Nice hints of chocolate and non-bitter coffee. Pretty mellow for a stout.
F: thin for a stout and a bit much carbonation for a stout.
O: As I finish this first bottle I realize this is a very drinkable beer, different than my first impression.

Acquired via Tumpster trade. Another dark brown beer, ruby hued edge to it, tan head, not much lace sticks around. Smell is shockingly, coffee.

Taste again, coffee, a little milder and smooth to it. Doesn't have to be the biggest, boldest coffee flavor to be good, this one is right down the middle. Viscosity wasn't as thick as I expected, but this is more of a sessionable coffee stout rather than a massive alcohol bomb to it. Slight chocolate malt flavor peaks out downbottle in the mouthfeel.

Wheras New Glarus makes some beers that it is the world leader in (cherry, raspberry) here, the coffee stout is merely a very good example of the style. Great morning beer.

12oz into an Ommegang Tulip. Bottled on 10/21/10.

Pours a murky brown with a small off white head. Decent lacing.

Aroma of malts and coffee. Restrained, but appropriate for style/ABV.

Taste is sweet and roasty. I would call this an understated, yet enjoyable Coffee Stout.

Feels rich due to good carbonation. Drinks easily - very approachable coffee beer.

Pours a clear dark brown with a tan head. The head sticks around for a while before dissipating into a patchy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of equal parts roasted malt and coffee with very light hints of chocolate.

Tastes similar to how it smells. The coffee is a bit more intense than the aroma, but the roasted malt still balances it out very well. Both combine to end with a nice bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good. It's smooth, but a bit on the thin side. The carbonation is good.

Drinkability is good. I had no problem finishing what I had, this is an easy-drinking coffee stout.

Overall this is almost a coffee porter to me, as it's much lighter than most other coffee stouts. Worth a shot.

A- This beer pours a jet black body with a thick light tan head that turns slightly rocky but last and last. There is no sign of carbonation in that dense body.

S- This beer has a smooth soft rich coffee roasted malt note with a hint of cream in the background.

T- This beer has a smooth roasted black malt and coffee roasted malt flavor with a slight tart note to it. The finish is not bitter from hops nor roasted malt but there is a chocolate malt flavor that hangs on after the finish. There is a light raisin note that comes through when it warms and a light vinous note in the finish when drank at room temp (as the bottle instructs).

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel

D- This beer has a good malt flavor with note of coffee but not the over-the-top coffee flavor. Smooth and drinkable but not a lot of dark roasted grain notes that really make a stout different than a porter.

Although I purchased this beer in Mount Horeb Wisconsin, the Troll capital of the United States of America, I will do my best to not have a Troll-like review.

I shared this beer just last night (3/15/10) with my girlfriend and we had some hamburger pasta (NOT hamburger helper) just before enjoying this beer.

A: It was as dark as oil, with a medium to rich head on top. This was poured from a bottle to a standard mug.

S: It smelled like coffee, not over powering, but the coffee scent was unmistakable. A slight bit of chocolate as well, as with most stouts.

T: I got a lot of coffee in this one. My girlfriend even said it felt like it was morning, because of the coffee taste to it. I had sipped some from the bottle before pouring, and it was not as noticed in the bottle, but once poured it was there in full force. At first taste, being the first stout I had had in a little while, it hit strong, and above all delicious.

M: There wasn't a lot of carbonation in this brew, which made it quite smooth to drink. I had a bit of a sore throat at the time, and usually too much carbonation doesn't feel good with that, but this beer felt great going down. Not quite as thick as most stouts, this one actually felt pretty lite, making it very drinkable.

D: As I said, very drinkable. Even though it was a stout, it felt like you could get a couple of them down quick, being so full of good taste and quite easy to drink.

Poured out of a bottle into a pint glass.

A: Deep mahogany, almost black, just barely able to see light through it, with a light tan head about one finger high, which faded fairly quickly but remnants remained around the edges throughout the glass, providing decent lacing.

S: Smelled equal parts coffee, chocolate malts, and cola (??)

T: Tasted like a cold coffee with just a touch too little sugar in it (for my tastes), with malt characteristics on the back end.

M: Medium-thin to medium, with slight carbonation. Seems a bit thinner than a traditional stout.

D: Very easy going and extremely sessionable at 5.5 ABV. Could easily have a few of these in an evening.

Poured a deep black amber with a two finger white head that stays with the whole glass.

Aroma is not surprisingly....coffee...strong black coffee with some sweetness of burnt malt.

Taste is burnt amber malt, lots of espresso coffee, and then a hops bitterness finishing it off.

Mouthfeel is slightly thin but rich flavors make up for it.

12oz bottle, served in a DFH signature glass

A - poured with about a half in of bubbly and frothy khaki colored foam. the beer is a very deep brunt ruby color..bordering black. the head eventually settles to a very thin flim and ring around the edges.

S - a bit of toasted malts, a bit metallic. coffee is very well hidden here, just barely noticeable through the late second half...smells a bit stale. other notes of chocolate and grain.

T - kicks off with some strong toasted malts, caramel (actually very reminiscent of cracker jacks), and some dark fruits (raisins). coffee finally makes an appearance in the last quarter, coming in as very sweetened and creamed. overall this is more sweet than roasty.

M - a tad thinnish body, carbonation is mild but very active. leaves your mouth feeling a bit syrupy, sticky. finishes clean with some lingering sweetness.

D - honestly a bit disappointed with this one, after being very impressed with every other New Glarus beer i've had until now. being a big fan of strong and bitter coffee, this is just too sweet and subdued, drinks more like an American Porter with some coffee notes.

The label recommends this at room temperature--this review is from a bottle served at a little below that, probably 55 degress F or so. Thanks to Brutha Nick for the assist.

Pours a color uncannily like coffee, that abyss-like nether-area between darkest brown and black. Half-inch head is froth and lessens in about a minute, with just a few small dots of lace in its wake.

Aroma is an excellent mingling of flaked dark chocolate, sweet cream and quality medium-roast coffee. A bit grainy and nutty as well. As someone who prefers flavored coffees, this aroma works for me--especially as it's in a beer! Oh, what could be better?...

The chocolate from the aroma is pushed back almost entirely in the flavor by coffee and an assist from a lactic sort of sweetness. Its bitterness is controlled and easy-going, and there's an almost pungent unripe dark fruit element to the finish along with a trace of bitter dark chocolate returning underneath.

Medium-bodied at best, with tingly carbonation that would've been more annoying if it hadn't been wrapped in a really really slick texture.

The coffee is not overbearing here, yet clearly star of the show. Very good drinkability for a coffee stout, due to lighter body and good balance. Chalk up another for the amazing Careys at New Glarus.

Just as the name suggests...decent about of coffee flavor. Balanced fairly well with a sturdy hop presence. Pours a nice black body with quickly disappearing tan head. Relatively creamy, however, there is a somewhat hard-to-describe thinness, which does not serve the beer well, though it does add to its overall drinkabiliy. Stouts are not normally great session beers, this one may be an exception. But there are certainly better stouts out there. Make sure this beer is nice and warm before drinking, the malts really make themselves known as the beer nears room temp. Overall, a decent selection, and widely available in the late winter/early spring here in Wisconsin.

Bottle from Reilly's in Madison, shared with Chris. Substantial coffee taste and aroma. Good think its very good coffee.Some cocoa to make it go down and impart sweetness. A bit light mouthfeel. Very lacey. Carbonation right there. Good drinkability. Good after dinner beer.

I poured a bit too aggressively. Black of course, with a HUGE sand colored creamy looking head. Very shimmery, and some nice lacing appears, as the head disappears.

Aroma is coffee, cream and sugar please.

Bitter up front, although whether from hops or roasted malts, I can't tell. Then a wave of silky sweetened coffee follows. Mmmmm... good. Smooth, creamy, bitter, sweet. Just like a good cup of coffee (Although I usually take mine black.)

Mouthfeel is a tad thin, but not bad. Long bitter finish, makes this a beer to savor.

Overall, a good coffee stout. Not overdone and extreme like some representations. Just a solid flavorful drinker, yet another jewel in the crown. Cheers!

A welcome coffee aroma greets you in the nose of New Glarus' Coffee Stout. Beyond that it's nutty, a touch chocolatey, and roasty with malt. It doesn't really carry over so well in the flavor though. The coffee is there, and it is nicely balanced with the rest of the stout so that it doesn't dominate, or worse, fade away after the first two sips, but it's not quite as rich as one might hope for, and there's a bit of dark malt acidity that can be a bit much at times. The nuttiness is lost, and there are no real noticeable caramel undertones; but some yeasty fruitiness slips in, and it reminds me of a good cup of African Tanzania with some notes of black currant and citrus. Some leafy and grassy hops are present in the background as well, which is appropriate, and the bitterness is right on track with a very firm, but not solid or brash attack as there's so much dark malt acidity and roastiness going on that it's not needed. It finishes really nicely though, and not really acidic or particularly bitter, with a note of sweet dark sugar at the front of the tongue, and a bit of toasted nutiness over soft spent coffee-grounds at the back. Enjoyable and drinkable!

12oz into 6.75oz tasting glass, from notes.
A: At first glance, there is much to light of a SRM, than I would expected for a Stout. The body shows good amounts of carbonation, while having an uncertain clarity. The khaki head pours with vigor and holds with light head retention and leaves wispy lace.

S: Nice medium intensity aroma of a complex layer of malts, chocolate and black. A nice hint of the dark side. Coffee is subtle and perfectly balanced with other flavors. Good aroma, with a nice sweet tone on the finish that is very pleasant.

T/M: Nice full flavor, while still keeping the body light. Good malts undertones with a nice well rounded sweetness. Intermediate flavors of nice roasted prolonged taste. Good light mouthfeel that is creamy at points. Coffee again is present, but not intrusive. Cold steeping (which is the method NG uses) is the way to go to get these nice sweet coffee flavors without being bitter and astringent. Overall good stout, but a little weak on the body.

D: This would be one that I would recommend to others, the flavors are key and the drinkability is great. Slight deduction of points due to the light body, which would in turn bring the drinkability up.
