12 fl oz brown glass bottle with branded pressure cap with stylish blue label acquired in a trade from the very gracious Duff27 served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are sky high given the brewery - which makes some beers I really adore.
Allowed to warm nearly to room temperature in keeping with instructions on the label. I mean, it's slightly chilled as I start to pour it but I'm planning to savour this one. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
Not paired with food.
A: Pours a gorgeous light tan colour of great cream, amazing thickness, and fantastic retention. Light thin lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Body colour is a very dark brown. I love the soft mocha head; it's near ideal in colour for the style methinks. Often, stouts go for that rich vibrant dark tan, but this one keeps the head colour a bit lighter, evoking a less boozy dark malty flavour and more of a restrained roast character. I'm excited to try it. Nontransparent and opaque. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.
Sm: Evocative cold-pressed coffee, a bit of roast, soft cream, well executed dark malts, milky notes, mocha, light cola notes, marshmallow, light nutty notes, and some black coffee bitterness. Any hopping is so minimal as to be imperceptible. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. Comes off subtle and pleasant. I'm excited to try it.
T: Delightfully integrated full-flavoured coffee; mocha, cream, light coffee bitterness, sinfully delicious roast - it's all here. Maybe even a dash of espresso. It's balanced near perfectly with some light cola notes, well executed dark malts, marshmallow, and light nuts. I'm not big on the cola notes; they weaken the body. It lacks the complexity and bold aggressive flavour I love in a coffee stout, but it compensates with impressive balance and notable subtlety. A bit of milk chocolate in the third act. I don't get any yeast or alcohol.
Mf: Silky smooth and refreshingly wet. Perfect carbonation. Chewy feel. Feels good on the tongue; not too overbearing, actually quite luscious. It's full bodied, but it might be a bit thin.
Dr: Extremely drinkable for a coffee stout; it's more approachable than most offerings. I'll enjoy this bottle, and I'm impressed by the subtlety and balance New Glarus has brought to it. But I do want more complexity and boldness from a coffee stout. I love the experimentation and would definitely get this again - now knowing what it tastes like. Another solid brew from one of the best breweries around. Highly recommended for fans of the style; this pushes boundaries - just in a different direction than most.
