Originally reviewed April 2, 2007. 12 Oz Bottle. Salty coffee roast and chicory, bark-like aroma. Some nice deep malt sugar cream and roast interaction. Inviting. Deep black-brown pour, with a silky soap of aged ivory. Flavor is in vein with the aroma, finding a mellow roasted intensity and a lot of sweet char, bourbon oak, barbeque and a nip of dark chocolate. Intergrated and smooth. Somewhat evaporative. Palate dissipates quickly. A rush of flavor quickly becomes a salted oak bite, with a long dry coffee grains smack. Nipped with a little chocolate mint brush. Could use some more density and staying power perhaps, but the palate is crisp and drinkable for the style. Northern Brewer really becomes signature in the smack further down the beer. Nice.

Roy's Market New Glarus

New Glarus Coffee Stout pours the darkest of browns with glowing garnet highlights when held to the light. A one finger khaki head formed and quickly faded to a solid skim coat. Drink lacing after each sip. Good looking brew.

Aroma is what was expected. Roasted malts with welcoming hazelnut drifting throughout. Freshly ground coffee beans on the backend. Slight lactic quality.

Flavor is much like the aroma. Lightly roasted malts start things off but fall to a backdrop fairly quickly. Hazelnut shows up around mid palate along with a hint of spicy hops. The fresh coffee shows up on the finish with a few drops of cream. Very good flavor

The mouthfeel is just a little on the thin side. A creamier mouthfeel would go perfect with the flavors. The thinner body does make this beer an easy drinker.

Good drinkability for a stout. Thinner body makes this go down incredibly easy.

Very flavorful enjoyable stout. The coffee is subdued and in no way overpowering like some other coffe infused beers I've sampled in the past. A sessionable coffee stout. Another winner from New Glarus.

This stout was dark brown and not black which surprised me. It had a faint "stouty" smell to it but no coffee that I can detect. Taste was also standard stout but no coffee. My friend said he could taste it so maybe my palate is deficient. In any case, this was a good stout but didn't live up to the label for me.

It smells great, but the flavor just can't back it up. There's a rich smell of dark roasted grains mixed with coffee and dark, bitter chocolate. The flavor lacked on the coffee and reminded me of a watered down Kalamazoo Stout. There's a tinge of bitterness, but fairly balanced and somewhat smooth.

A- This beer pours a jet black body with a thick light tan head that turns slightly rocky but last and last. There is no sign of carbonation in that dense body.

S- This beer has a smooth soft rich coffee roasted malt note with a hint of cream in the background.

T- This beer has a smooth roasted black malt and coffee roasted malt flavor with a slight tart note to it. The finish is not bitter from hops nor roasted malt but there is a chocolate malt flavor that hangs on after the finish. There is a light raisin note that comes through when it warms and a light vinous note in the finish when drank at room temp (as the bottle instructs).

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel

D- This beer has a good malt flavor with note of coffee but not the over-the-top coffee flavor. Smooth and drinkable but not a lot of dark roasted grain notes that really make a stout different than a porter.

Pours a nice clean/clear dark brown color, nice carbonation, nice little creamy tannish head, some sticky lacing afterwards. The nose is roasted malts, coffee, and caramel. The taste is of nice slightly sweet roasted malts, and mostly coffee, with some caramel. Medium body. Very drinkable, this is a tasty Coffee Stout.

Poured nice light brown head. Dark, is a dark ruby at the edges and when held to the light.

Gives of a roast odor, with coffee and chocolate depth.

Smooth, roast flavors. I thought the coffee started out a little slow, but is there at the end, leaving no doubt it's a coffee stout.

Decent feel in the mouth. Not to light, but doesn't feel like syrup either. Doesn't leave the mouth coated.

A good coffee stout, easy to drink. Not anything unexpected or outstanding either.

Aroma: Light coffee and roasted notes on the nose. No hop aroma detected. No off aromas.

Appearance: Black body with shoe leather edging. A thin and wispy off white cap.

Flavor: Pleasant base of roasted grains, biscuity flavors, and a touch of french roast coffee.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. A touch creamy. Finishes clean, dry, and bitter. No alcohol heat.

Overall impression: Reminds me of a robust porter. Nothing off but the flavors and body are too subtle to be "stout". The color is more robust porter in quality as well. Call it a robust coffee porter and I'm on board. Worth a shot.

A: Pours like cola with the same consistency and color. Head started out quite fizzy but finally ended in a fine film of tan bubbles.

S: Lotta coffee going on, very sharp and pungent. Some woody vinous characteristics, almond butter and crunch bar.

T: Coffee flavor is fairly straightforward, simply along the lines of iced coffee with just a nip of cream added. Sourness creeps up around the sides of the tongue with a significant twang to it. Roasted barley comes next with a minor amount of bitterness to it and no real hop profile. Finishes with boring bitter bakers chocolate of a low quality.

M: Thin viscosity with a hard mouthfeel.

D: Not a bad coffee beer but a bit boring. There are a few really good coffee beers on the market but this isn’t one of them.

A welcome coffee aroma greets you in the nose of New Glarus' Coffee Stout. Beyond that it's nutty, a touch chocolatey, and roasty with malt. It doesn't really carry over so well in the flavor though. The coffee is there, and it is nicely balanced with the rest of the stout so that it doesn't dominate, or worse, fade away after the first two sips, but it's not quite as rich as one might hope for, and there's a bit of dark malt acidity that can be a bit much at times. The nuttiness is lost, and there are no real noticeable caramel undertones; but some yeasty fruitiness slips in, and it reminds me of a good cup of African Tanzania with some notes of black currant and citrus. Some leafy and grassy hops are present in the background as well, which is appropriate, and the bitterness is right on track with a very firm, but not solid or brash attack as there's so much dark malt acidity and roastiness going on that it's not needed. It finishes really nicely though, and not really acidic or particularly bitter, with a note of sweet dark sugar at the front of the tongue, and a bit of toasted nutiness over soft spent coffee-grounds at the back. Enjoyable and drinkable!

Thanks to kmpitz2 for another midwest treat...
Dark brown in color...bordering black but some light is able to pass thru along the edges.
Two fingers of light tan head...aerated and full of life, but fades to a thin skimming after a couple minutes...very spotty lacing.
Mostly yeast in the nose...some caramel, chocolate and very little coffee.
Mildly roasted coffee does make its way into the taste, thankfully. Too bad it is the only highlight of this beer. Besides the coffee, its fairly bland in all other aspects when I put it against other coffee stouts I've had.
Thin mouthfeel...more closely resembling a porter. I am not too surprised, as I was underwhelmed when I had the Cherry Stout...both good beers in themselves, but hard to rate higher then slightly above average.

pours deep brown with ruby highlights. a huge fluffy tan head drops very slowly and leaves lots of lace.

aroma is nice. light sourness. bit of roast. milk chocolate. bit of caramel.

taste is nice. bittersweet chocolate. light sourness. biscuit malt. bit of caramel. hint of alcohol. med-low bitterness level. slight hints of orange citrus. definitely best when served at room temperature per the bottles instructions. this one felt a little bland at fridge temps, but really began to shine when it had warmed.

mouthfeel is great. medium low carbonation. fairly big body. super smooth.

drinkability is good. well balanced, with the alcohol hidden well. the coffee comes through less than i expected, but it's still nice even without it.

This American Stout pours nearly black with chocolaty brown highlights. A nice tan head doesn't hold well but leaves good lace.

The aroma is amazing with strong scents of pungent freshly roasted coffee beans, and a bit of nuttiness and malt.

The taste exhibits more chocolate (dark/Dutch) than expected, but still has a lot of coffee and molasses as well. Very nice. Dark and maybe not as complex, but very satisfying.

The mouthfeel is lighter that the aroma would suggest. Smooth and decadent throughout. With a relatively low alcohol content (5.7%) and a unexpected lightness on the palate, the drinkability is fairly high. A great beer experience.

Poured a deep black amber with a two finger white head that stays with the whole glass.

Aroma is not surprisingly....coffee...strong black coffee with some sweetness of burnt malt.

Taste is burnt amber malt, lots of espresso coffee, and then a hops bitterness finishing it off.

Mouthfeel is slightly thin but rich flavors make up for it.

Opaque hazelnut with generous sepia highlights. The toast brown crown is three fingers in size after a gentle pour and looks good atop the beer. Thanks to thick sheets of BB-shot lace, the appearance score is an easy call.

The nose is a gloriously aromatic mixture of roasted malt and black coffee (and I'm not even a coffee drinker). Unlike some similar offerings, java doesn't dominate so completely as to make it seem as if one is smelling cold coffee rather than beer. I'm prepared to believe that Coffee Stout is 'hearty', as the label claims. Is it?

No, not really, but it isn't too shabby for a less than 6.0% American stout. I'm happy to report that the brewers have found that magical nexus where good stout and good coffee collide, the whole more delicious than the sum of its parts. I wouldn't have wanted any more or any less coffee to have been added. Java junkies might want more.

I like the gentle char brought out by the roasting of (presumably) chocolate and/or black malt. The beer has an appealing bitterness, partially due to hops I'm sure, and a sneaky sweetness that almost makes it taste like a milk stout. Black coffee with a generous splash of creamer seems about right, although I've never had a cup of coffee in my life.

The mouthfeel is the only slight chink in the armor. As noted above, it's probably acceptable for a relatively low ABV stout, but I would like to see at least the suggestion of chewiness. Keeping the beer on the taste buds for another second or two would allow one to appreciate the wonderful flavor to an even greater extent.

New Glarus Coffee Stout is yet another solid offering from one of Wisconsin's (and one of the Midwest's) best breweries. I probably wouldn't drink a lot of it, even if distribution ever reaches this state, but I sure enjoyed the hell out of this bottle.

Pours a very deep and dark red with a fantabulous head, rocky brown and sticky with lacing.

Smells of gentle, roasted oatmealyness, dark stout grain, and very lightly like sweet chocolate-flavored coffee. There's no hint of roughness.

Tastes as smooth as silk! The oatmealyness (I could swear there was some in here!) is large and present in the front, and it is done up to perfection--once again, no roughness, just light semi-sweetness that has a nice, nourishing feel, like unsweetened grain. This moves into a slightly more rough middle as the oatmeal gives way to lightly roasted and lightly bitter coffee and ends with a sweetened node of chocolate.

Wowee Zowee that's a lot of complexity from such a crisp and refreshing beer. I know, I know: "crisp" and "refreshing" aren't words you usually hear being used to describe coffee stouts, but this one is both. It may even be better suited for springtime than for winter!

Served with a smallish, tan, frothy, foamy head. Opaque dark brown, almost black. Aroma's a rich dark bitter cocoa, with some coffee, molasses, toffee, rich caramel. Taste is same but the coffee/very dark, bittersweet chocolate coming to forefront. Fine light carbonation. Served a little cold at first and thin, but as it warms has richer body. Easy drinking.

Yesterday I tried an Imperial Brown from Walking Man that tasted a lot like this. Either that means Walking Man missed their mark or New Glarus did.

This poured a bit light for the style. It had a cola-ish look to it as it spilled from the bottle into my glass. Once it settled the body was dark as I'd like but still that initial lightness can't be denied. The head was dense and brown. No lacing.

Nose reminds me of Folgers or something ... it IS coffeelike but definitely doesn't bring to mind quality coffee. Or maybe I've just been living in Seattle too long. I also get a hint of chocolate but that's it. Not very complex.

A bit thin mouthwise. Overall not as good as I'd hoped.

A midnight black body with some brown highlights along the edges when held up to the light. The head is about an inch thick and a light tan. Coffee aroma, roasted malt stands out. Mouthfeel is a little thin. Flavor is of roasted malt with a slight hop bitterness in the middle with a dry finish. Taste lingers a bit afterwards. Not a bad beer, but not something that I'll be craving anytime soon.

Pours a dark brown black with whitish head, shrinking to a thick film, lots of lacing around the glass. Aroma has nice coffee and roasted malt tones, a bit chalky perhaps. The taste is pretty darn good, nothing jumping up to scream at you, just a solid coffee stout. The mouth seemed a bit thin, but its silky smooth body makes up for it. In all, pretty stock, but a good drinker.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a 20oz imperial pint.

A: Pours a thin looking black that lets a bit of light through. Ruby highlights towards the bottom and sides of the glass. Khaki colored, one finger head that leaves a little bit of lace.

S: Roasted malt and chocolate with virtually no aroma of coffee.

T: Big roasted malt flavors that, I'm afraid, overshadows most of the coffee in this. Nice flavors of chocolate with a pinch of spicy plum.

M: Rather thin for a stout. Mouthfeel is bitter and slight.

D: Inoffensive and, sadly, not very bold for a coffee stout. I was underwhelmed.

A - Completely black opaque appearance with an initially off-white head that fades to an eighth inch, thicker around the rim of the glass. Lacing is above average.

S - Rich, creamy chocolate ice cream with slightly bitter, day-old coffee grounds...and whipped cream.

T - Beginning is very creamy with a little carbonation, then to a medium bitterness with a nice coffee taste. Finish is toasty malts.

M - Consistency is on the thin side. Carbonation is minimal.

D - A solid stout overall. Very nice coffee aspect. Reminds me a lot of Bell's Kalamazoo Stout. Seems to be underrated.

12 ounce bottle. Pours brown but appears black in the glass. Lovely whitish brown foam. Not the greatest nose, but what flavor! Underlying fruits (banana, plum), along with hints of chocolate, cocoa and of course, coffee. Loads of espresso. This beer just seemed more refined and complex than the average coffee stout.

Sturdy, proud-looking tan head which recedes but does not die. Several minutes after pouring it's still there; great! Body is black as pitch and allows no light through, even at the edges.

Fresh-ground coffee pervades although rich earth-tones, caramel and chocolate hitch a ride on its back.

Coffee certainly is featured but it is more nuanced than that. Strong malt presence lends a subtle sweetness beyond the bitter coffee. Still, there is a touch of mustiness that isn't totally at home here.

Mouthfeel is just short on thickness and it really lacks that "sticks to your ribs" quality I'm looking for in a great cold-weather beer (after all, it's April in Chicago and...snowing). Still, this is one that I'll be sure to check out again as I enjoyed it.

Pours black with a medium-sized, very carbonated head. Lacing starts as the head dies, but disappears quickly.

Aroma has tell-tale chocolate smell, but there is something else odd in there. Another reviewer says corn, but for me it's like fake cookies.

Flavor seems pretty rote. Typical attempt at chocolate and coffee flavors that leave a powdered cocoa aftertaste. There is also a milk stout lactose flavor and feel.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery. Quite disappointing.

Drinkability is fine, but it's only average. This was only expounded by having it side by side with Lake Louie's Mr. Mephisto. Bring back Road Slush!
