A small, fizzy tan head quickly comes and goes as I pour. Dark, dark brown body with a little reddish hue. The smell abounds with fresh cherries. A little wood and tobacco aroma is tucked away behind the big cherry smell. Taste is dominated by cherries-- sweet and tart. Minimal "stout" flavor though, I can't detect much roasted malt at all. Something medicinal in the taste has the unfortunate effect of drawing comparisons to children's cherry flavored cough syrup. The sweet and tart flavors aren't bad, but without a good roasted malt background "Cherry Stout" reminds me more of Wild Cherry Pepsi than it does a great New Glarus beer. Fine carbonation also recalls a soda pop more than a stout. Fairly thin, and not terribly filling.
NG Cherry stout is by no means "bad". I enjoyed drinking it, and that is most important. Yet, upon finishing a Cherry Stout I'm not really ever in the mood for another.
