A: The appearance is not as dark as I would have thought. It's clear brown out of the bottle with about a finger of thin off-white head. It sits in the glass dark, but relatively see-through brown with hints of red. Slow bubbles hold a thin ring atop the beer, but it doesn't stick around for very long.
S: Originally I thought this tasted really medicinal. But actually, I think it smells better in the glass. Sweet, fresh cherries assault the nose with some underlying chocolate. I'm really worried about how fake or medicinal it might taste. I don't hate the aroma, though. The cherries do work with the roast and chocolate qualities from the stout.
T: I have to admit, I'm confused by this beer. Every part of my tastes buds want this to be medicinal or too sweet. But it isn't. The taste starts off roasty, but that is quickly overtaken by a huge hit of sweet cherries that carry the flavor to some light chocolate that peaks out in the middle and shines at the finish. The backend is also sweet, but not that lingering, overpowering sweetness that comes with this style from time to time. This actually does taste like chocolate covered cherries. Or Hershey's Kisses with the cherry center. I quite enjoy it. This is the best attempt at a cherry stout I've had yet.
MF: Medium body with a lower than average amount of carbonation. The drinkability is alright, but overall I think Cherry Stouts are best enjoyed as no more than 12oz at a time.
O: As I said, easily my favorite cherry stout. You can't go wrong with this one. Don't be put off by the smell, as I was ready to be. Finally someone has found a way to make the cherries not taste artificial. Leave it to New Glarus to properly utilize fruit.
