This year's vintage, from this spring. Tasted 4 November 2012, reviewed from notes.
Pours deep brown. Light behind it just barely allows me to see through, and to see that it's clear, despite the dark color. Some reddish brown hues. One finger of light tan head, slowly relaxes, leaving a good cap and gobs of lacing. Very nice.
Smell is cherry, cherry, and more cherry. Reminds me of NG's Belgian Red, sweet, full in the nose, and syrupy. Fantastic.
Tasty stuff. It's definitely more of a fruit beer than a stout. In fact, I have a hard time calling it a stout at all. But New Glarus knows how to do fruit beers, and this one is another hit. Big on the cherries, rich and sweet. There's a slight twang that could be hops, or just an unknown bite. Very little stout character, but I'm okay with that.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, but syrupy. Medium-low carbonation, could use a little more.
Everything about this beer is syrupy - in a way, it's like drinking cherry syrup beer. Yum, cherry syrup beer.
