Thirty years have passed since we began brewing here in New Glarus. Today we celebrate our anniversary with the return of our first bier, Edel-Pils! This “Nobel-Pilsner” is the creation of our Brewmaster Dan Carey. He brought special yeast from Bavaria, combined it with Wisconsin and European Malts as well as the finest Bavarian and Wisconsin hops. Then employing traditional brewing methods, this Pilsner finished with a long cold rest in our cellars. Expect this bier to be full-bodied and incredibly smooth. It will complement any fine meal or friendly gathering. We take our time brewing so that you might take your time enjoying.

No bottling date (bottle reads ‘K063 U759’); consumed on 1/16/2024

Pours a crystal-clear, deep golden body capped with two fingers of soapy, eggshell-white foam; good head retention yields a half-finger of cap, large, frothy collar, and ample spread of chunky, webby lacing strewn around the walls of the glass.

Aroma opens to fresh wheat bread with soft lemon interlaced; modest peppercorn accents feed increasingly rustic straw undertones as a semi-sweet, doughy yeast profile informs throughout.

Taste brings white bread crust, straw, and bright lemon upfront as yeast trends slightly fruity as the profile develops, leaving clean minerality and hints of wet grass on the back end.

Mouthfeel offers a medium-light body and a robust, prickly fluff of rounded, full carbonation; flaky-taut texturing yields an advancing, paper-dry peak past the mid-palate, snappy and clean into a quick finish.

A deeper bread expo flourishes through an extensively clean presentation, with a subtle Noble hop backing welcoming even-tempered earthiness for added depth; an engaging, ultra-quaffable effort.

Appearance: Clear yellow gold, good head.

Smell: Bready and kind of spicy.

Taste: Bready, a touch of honey, a little grassy note, medium bodied. A good beer-tasting beer.

Overall: Had some on tap at the source and picked up a bottle for review at home. It's a nice easy pilsner, I really should have grabbed their other pilsner for a side-by-side. Good stuff.

Getting back to New Glarus roots means getting back to pilsner roots. Creating a tried and true Pilsen-styled lager is a no-brainer for multifaceted , cross-culture appeal.

Sparkling gold and teeming with bubbles, Edel-Pils constructs a light and lofty cotton-white froth. Above it rests a grainy-sweet perfume with floral and spicy aromas and hints of mint and hay. As its sweet malts splash the tongue, notions of light bread, wafer and powdered sugar all come to mind.

As the steady and persistent malts retain its sweet structures carrying on the middle palate, the rise of hops also include a peppery spice to offset the lingering malts. As its bitterness grows, a straw-like grassiness brings hints of lemongrass, peppery greens and dry hay.

With hints of estery apple and racy sulfurs lurk in the background, the beer closes with a crisp and snappy bite that's more rounded than German-styled or American lager for a fuller appreciation of pilsner malts and their soft savory, nearly buttery softness. A brief aftertaste of those peppery hops outlast the malts even if briefly so.

(12 oz bottle, no date/code; purchased single from their Beer Depot last week... poured into a plastic cup)

This tastes everything like an old, nostaglic home-spun recipe that perhaps hasn't changed much over the years... the categorization of this as a Czech pilsener is rather (way) off... amber, near tawny in color, with some decent foam formation... the malt flavor is relatively dry, lightly toasted, delicate kiss of honeyed cereal grain; hops are earthy, leafy yet not that floral or herbal... mild roundness to its touch up front, but drops out clean, quick, and with a slip snap in its finish... distinct, but not one of their more delectable beers; a fine American lager, worthy of a tap handle (2199)
