Thanks to imperialking for trading me this beer.
Pours a deep brown color with dark red highlights, the body has a similar brown hue of the bottle it comes in. A nice inch of head formed on top but quickly reduced to a ring.
Bready and malt sweetness as soon as I popped the cap. Multi-grain bread, plums, sweet raisins, hints of cherries, chocolate, toast, fruity yeast esters, and a touch of fruity alcohol in the background. Notes of sherry become noticeable as the beer opens up and hints of earthy hop aromas too. Has a sort of powdery brown sugar aroma in the background. Low butterscotch levels detected. Very fruity.
Earthy hop bitterness upfront with a rough toasted flavor at mid-palate, dark fruits and a slight bitter chocolate near the finish but the earthiness comes back in the end. Some alcohol heat which warms the gums and mouth but very clean. Floral notes late in the aftertaste with a grainy flavor. Not as sweet and malty as I was expecting from the aroma, at least not with the first sip...let's see if it changes as it warms up to room temperature (at cellar temp currently). Surprisingly, it's very hoppy. Certainly has that "bittersweet" combination as it describes on the label but I was hoping for a sweeter finish. The finish is dry and full of earthy bitterness that lingers all around the mouth for quite a while.
Soft carbonation as the beer enters the mouth, full bodied but not syrupy or overly thick. Quite nice on the mouthfeel.
As it stands right now I wouldn't reach for another one anytime soon, but I do think this one has potential to be a really good beer with another year or two on it. Would definitely be interested in trying this one again next fall/winter.

Nice lacing and they nailed the color. Dark fruits, caramel, booze, candy sugar, oxidation on the nose. Taste follows the nose plums raisins alcohol complementary oxidation to an aged barley wine. Medium carbonation and works with the style. I love aged barlywine's and this is a good one but the heat from the alcohol keeps this from getting a very good rating. Would drink again if I had another one.
