It is interesting that for this style American brewers hold 7 of the 8 top scores. (The top one is Bavarian.) But when we typically look to styles that American innovation seems to excel, we usually think of the British ales. But now, that innovation clearly has spread to lagers in the Marzen style.

Staghorn has the 8th highest rating. It always has been a very good beer to me. But when it is the first Oktoberfest of the autumn (as it has been for me during the last two years), it is fair to consider it a great beer.
If you can find it (New Glarus only distributes in Wisconsin), buy it.

A: Burnt orange to caramel in color, a light amber - crystal clear - medium size, white head, fades to wisps, maintains a small cap but leaves above-average lacing

S: Malty, minus any excess sweetness - caramel malts and grains, lightly toasty - straight-up caramel, except the caramel sweetness is turned down to 0 - hint of floral hops - toasted bread and crackers, toffee

T: Super clean, stupidly drinkable - really nice malt profile - toasted bread and toasted crackers - biscuits and toffee - caramel and touches of amber malts - caramel flavor, except it's extremely dry, lightly sweet overall - floral hops - touches of grass and lager yeast - finishes bready with just a touch of caramel, clean

M: Medium body, smooth body with a clean, crisp finish, nicely carbonated, superbly drinkable

O: Don't mess with the stag, you'll get the horns

The Märzen / Oktoberfest style is tricky. If it's too sweet and too cooked, I'm not a fan. Staghorn really nails it, with just a touch of sweetness and a nice level of toast. This is an Oktoberfest actually worth drinking by the liter.

In a word: Crisp. This is the crispest beer I've ever had. Everyone kind of makes the same Octoberfest, but this one is amazing. Very deep and satisfying flavor.

L: pours a light, bright amber color with a head that dissipates quickly.
S: you cane smell the fruit and caramel with the distinct Marzen malt smell
T: That oktoberfest flavor but a brighter, more fruity flavor then a lot of other one ones. Sweet and tasted of caramel and malt. Not much bitterness on the end.
F: medium bodied with not too much carbonation.

O: very solid Oktoberfest. I find myself wanting a bit more bitterness on the end, but very delicious.

Twelve oz picked up in variety pack. Bottled on 233 day of the year. Poured into pint glass. Light amber with decent one inch head that fades slowly leaving coats of lace. Smell is sweet almost grape green apple with baked bread. Taste follows with a creamy finish. Great easy drinking beer. Cheers!

Pours a nice amber color. Has aroma of caramel malts. Flavor is smooth and mellow. You get the malts and touch of sweetness. Overall a nice Oktoberfest style beer with a nice flavor.

Pours a transparent copper color with a moderate head of cream-colored foam with solid retention. Mild aroma smells of toffee, caramel, nuts, and grassy hops.

The taste is very clean and bright, featuring biscuity malt, grain husk, hints of caramel, and mellow, grassy hops. Warming reveals a touch of tartness toward the middle. The overall effect is very cohesive, as the flavors meld beautifully. Medium-light body and soft carbonation lend a smooth, creamy mouthfeel.

Overall, this is probably the most drinkable Oktoberfest I’ve had. It’s light, clean, smooth, and completely devoid of any impurities or off flavors. I’m not a huge Oktoberfest fan, and I usually prefer mine on the bolder side, however there’s no denying that this is a quality session beer.

Lively small bubbles rising to the head. Clear amber color.

Smells of fall spices and malt.

Quite subtle taste, with a great light feel. Very much the traditional German convention. The maltiness from the smell remains present in the taste, with notes of caramel and herbs. This is certainly not a beer which will blow people away, but it all comes together very nicely.

Had this on tap, poured into a New Glarus lager glass. It's a beautifully clear copper with a pure white head and spotty lacing. Looks like plenty of carbonation.
Smells like autumn. Whole wheat bread with bits of spice and caramel.
Really tasty with the delicious bready malts up front and hints of spice and a crisp bitter finish. Balance.
Mouthfeel is nice. Medium and zippy.
Flat out tasty and refreshing.

From a single into a nonic (and tasted side-by-side with a Spaten Ofest)
a: pours a beautiful bright reddish copper/mahogany with a 2 finger off white head that subsides into a little crown and leaves a minimal amount of lacing
s: whole wheat crackers, a little caramel sweetness but not too much, faint sweet earthy spiciness...the nose is a little faint but what you get is just right
t & m: everything harmonizes beautifully. Light bready malts, very faint caramel, wonderful earthy flavors...I don't get much in the way of fruity esters...though after it sits awhile, I start to get a little more fruit and even some sweetish pumpkin). I don't get a lot in the way of noble hops, though there is a little and the malts are definitely balanced out...very smooth throughout, with a medium and very satisfying body... maybe on the high side for carbonation...it isn't quite as crisp on the end as is ideal for me, but it does dry out nicely. all in all, this is just really well made and a pleasure to drink.

As compared with the Spaten, it is less grainy and bready, but brighter...and it just sings a little more. Not like it is in doubt, but NG is legit.

Look: A great looking copper/amber color with a thin white head.

Smell: Faint smells of cinnamon, malt, bread, and I even got some faint cherry from this one.

Taste: Balanced as all New Glarus beers. Spicy and sweet at the same time. The cinnamon, malt, and bread come out with a small amount of fruit on the back-end.

Feel: A little thin and crisp. No alcohol was really present. Good but not great.

Overall: My favorite Ocktoberfest beer. Really tastes like a marzen should.

Great appearance with frothy head and copper color. Smell and flavor show a good balance of caramel sweetness and light grassy, earthy hops. The beer drinks easy but has a rich and thick mouthfeel.

Nicely made Octoberfest that is a bit sweet for me. Not much if any hop presence as there should not be. Poured a nice copper with nice head and some lacing. Not great but good.

Pours a wonderful, opaque, reddish-orange with a two finger, white bubbly head that has good carbonation. Very nice sweet malt smell. A wonderful breads backed malt combination. There is a small hint of hop, but does not take away from the Carmel, malt taste I love from a good octofest. A crisp clean finish with a nice appearance of the hop in the finish. A wonderful American Octofest...one of the best.

12 oz bottle, poured into a nonic pint at ~40 degrees F.

A: Pours a crystal-clear orange-gold, much like a burnished copper. Forms a decent finger head of foam that seems just off-white with a hint of orange, and dissipates fairly quickly. Carbonation is visible as fairly large bubbles clinging to the bottom of the glass, occasionally shooting for the surface.

S: The aroma reminds me of a caramel biscuit with crumbled cracker topping. Some faint notes of spice and earth roll about in the scent as well.

T: The first sip opens almost exactly as the nose suggests, a blend of crackery and biscuity malt with some light caramel drizzle across the top. That is swiftly joined by a heavy dose of earthy, spicy hop presence, covering the malt presence with a thick layer of freshly turned soil from a field used to grow a mix of white, green, and black peppercorns. Said hop presence maintains all the way through the finish, where the malt returns to a little more prominence as a peppered biscuit, and into the aftertaste, where it lingers overlong.

M: This is a smooth, medium-carbonated, fairly thin-bodied beer. If it weren't for the hop presence, I could probably crush them down quickly.

O: While I love a good märzen, particularly the Ayinger (ironic given where Dan Carey spent a few months apprenticing), I primarily love them for showcasing malt with minimal hop presence. This beer stands that relationship on its head for me, and comes very close to triggering my supertaster reaction to hop-forward beer. While I can still drink it, and even enjoy some aspects of it, it is pretty far from my favorite märzen. If you're following any of my reviews because you're also a supertaster, you may want to give this one a miss.

Taste: Malt sweetness up front that does not approach caramel. Flavor is accentuated by a bready and pecan like character that blends together seamlessly. Alcohol flavor is nearly nonexistent and the beer ends with just enough bitterness to wipe the palate clean. A crisp beer with a medium low

Appearance: Perfectly clear. Can see to the other side of the room through the glass full of beer. Color is reminiscent of cream soda. Thick, cream-colored head that sticks around.

Aroma: Slightly spicy and herbal noble hop aroma followed by a roasted malt sweetness and a hint of alcohol. Very clean aroma, with little distractions. This smells like beer, which is what you want in the style.

Overall: this is an extremely drinkable Oktoberfest-style beer. It's perfect for drinking by the fire on a cool fall night. Not many American reductions of this style can match it.

Got this one as part of the New Glarus sampler pack. It's the first time I've ever had an Oktoberfest, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. For some reason it reminds me of a less-hoppy Moon Man. Not bad.

Appearance: A beautiful clear red color, poured with about a finger of foam that had a bit of retention time before dissipating. Some lacing is evident.

Smell: Possesses a faint malt aroma, not much jumped out here.

Taste: Crisp and refreshing, with a nice malt backbone and just enough hops to balance it out. There's a biscuity sweetness near the end of every swallow that I find myself growing fond of.

Mouthfeel: Crips and refreshing, with perhaps just a touch more carbonation than I'd prefer.

Overall: A fairly light, easy to drink beer that certainly has enough malt presence to keep me interested. I wouldn't quite place it amongst my favorite New Glarus beers, but it's an excellent brew nonetheless.

Seasonal 2015

A: Poured into a NG Pilsner glass the finger of nearly bright white head made of fine bubbles had moderate retention. The beer is a ritch orange to copper amber color with brilliant clarity. A constant stream of bubbles billows up from the nucleation point in the glass.

S: medium rich bready malt, with mild pilsner and a bread crust aroma at threshold. Hops are medium for the style with floral spicy noble hop aroma. Clean malty, german lager aroma - no diacityl or DMS to be found.

T: Moderately rich bready malt flavor with toast and melenoidin flavors coming through. Medium hop bitterness with a spicy noble flavor, a little higher then I'm used to in the style. Clean fermentation that leads to an emphasis on the malty backbone. Balance is on the malt. Aftertaste has medium sweetness and a slight toffee flavor.

M: medium full body with moderate carbonation. No alcohol warmth. A slight creamy mouthfeel - no astringency. Crisp and clean through and through.

O: Staghorn is a beer I can't get enough of when it hits the Wisconsin market. It means the days are getting shorter and fall is coming, but it also means I can have a few pints of it while watching a football game (which im not super into - but its worth the beer). A rich flavorful malt character with clean lager fermentation and a nice hop bitterness I can't get enough off. Cheers

Pours a light orange with 1/4 inch head and minimal lacing. Smells sweet and slight bready. Taste is again bready with a little caramel sweetness. Very easy drinking and highly recommended.

Orange-amber brew with a one finger sisal foam cap decent retention and lace. Grain and fruit on the nose. Dried cherry. Grassy. Taste is grainy, faint toasted malt, definite fruit presence cherries, unripe plum, berries. Medium body, modest carbonation. Malty finish, sweet but not overly sweet. This Oktoberfest isn't toasted enough and is too fruity for my Oktoberfest tastes.
