Appearance: Slightly warm golden color. Poured cold with a barely discernible haze – possibly proteins or hop oil – that disappeared warmer. Light, fragile, and lacy white head that disappears quickly.
Smell: Nicely floral balanced with pine and resin. Malts come up clean and richly sweet. Not a huge aroma for an IIPA – but very well balanced and enticing.
Taste: Follows with the aromas. Well balanced – slightly restrained but definitely representing in the IIPA style. Fresh floral and resiny hop in the flavors, nice crisp bittering backbone. The malt is there to support the hops – clean slight complex sweetness. Then the hop bittering and flavors are all over the palate. The appealing bitterness sticks for a while.
Mouthfeel: Medium light considering what you might expect from the 9.0% ABV. Carbonation forgoes the head and bursts on the tongue. Finishes a little slick, crisp, and finally slightly astringent.
Overall: Not a big punch like a West Coast IIPA. More nuanced like a playful slap with a velvet glove – not surprising from a brewery owned by a lady. Great balance. Well conceived hop bittering flavor and aroma. Cleanly brewed malt profile.
If you have a palate that appreciates excellent and slightly restrained presentation – this will please you as much as the much ballyhooed big boys in the DIPA style. Very appealing.
