This beer poured out much darker than I expected. The color of this beer was a nice looking amber color with a fluffy white head on top. The retention is moderate and not much lacing at all. The smell of the beer is much like a traditional Weizen brew, there is an additional caramel sweetness in there too. The taste has the typical banana and clove upfront with a very nice sweet malt finish. Very nice flavor on this beer. The mouthfeel is smooth, decent carbonation, light bodied, drinkable. Overall I was impressed with this beer. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did.

A: Golden amber shade with a huge fluffy white head.

S: Perfume-like banana/clove yeast, with a bit of malt underneath.

T: Yeast is more restrained in the flavor, allowing the malt to step out. Bready and slightly sweet, with a faint touch of fruity hops. Finish is short and clean.

M: Medium body with light-medium carbonation. Overall, mouthfeel is pretty soft and smooth.

For a mild easy drinker, this is a great beer. Smooth, but plenty of personality here.

Picked up a couple 6 packs of this earlier this fall. Finally getting around to reviewing one of the last ones left in the fridge.

A-This baby is very heady (large bubbles and yet frothy at the same time). Brilliantly clear with a rich copper color with plenty of tiny bubbles keeping that head dominating the surface.

S-Smells like a hefe-heavy on the banana fruity esters. Grainy wheat aroma.

T-A moderate amount of those banana-y esters. As well as lightly toasted wheat. What makes this beer unique is the spicy prickly heat sensation which has to be the cinnamon noted on the bottle. I'd prefer more of a clove phenol sensation instead.

M-Medium bodied for a weizen. Plenty of carbonation. Not creamy.

O-A solid brew although not as prefered as some other unfiltered versions. I think I'd rather drink the unfiltered versions that have a little more creaminess and stronger clove notes.

A - Pour this one slowly folks! Blooms into a gorgeous 2-3 finger head. Color is toasted red amber. Great lacing.

S - Banana and malt.

T - Banana and bread with a light tang. Lingering grape skin and phenols on the finish.

M - Light and crisp with medium carbonation.

O - Definitely an afternoon/evening beer, and great for a fall picnic or campfire. My first Kristalweizen, so I wasn't expecting the slight "cleaning solution" flavor of the phenols, but somehow it manages to be pleasant.

12oz bottle poured into a Weizen glass.

A - Crystal clear amber. A dense mountain of vanilla colored head. Thick lacing left down the glass.

S - Great banana ester persists through filtration. Has a sweet bread crust maltiness: toasty munich/biscuit malt, a touch of cinnamon.

T - I get a quick glimpse at some toasty malt but there is a huge helping of twangy wheat immediately after. Has good banana flavor that lingers a little for a pleasant finish.

M - High carbonation dances well on my tongue. Light to moderate body. Semi-sweet.

O - Great looking beer. Smells show a good depth of complexity. Flavor is huge on wheat and hefe-like. Carbonation works well and has perfect feel. Another great beer by New Glarus.

A: Pours a crystal clear red apple cider color. Nice off white color foam.

Nose is fruity apple and strong banana with some bubble gum. Frseh and fruity.

Taste is great bavarian wheat and yeast taste with a fruit base and picking up apple again which is a New Glarus characteristic that I love. A sweet and tart finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth and medium fizz with a crisp finish. Very refreshing.

Overall this is a cut above most american wheat beers. New Glarus makes the best beers in the U.S.A. When will they sell in Chicago???

Bottle poured into a chalice.

This pours a deep amber color: darker than I expected. It has a moderate amount of off-white head, which dissipates quickly. The smell is light & refreshing: banana, cloves, and sweet malts. It smella like a light belgian. The taste is light, pleasant, & refreshing: more of the banana flavor, with a light mouthfeel.

A departure from my usual, and I found it enjoyable.

Very tasty wheat beer from the good folks north of the Cheddar Curtain. (I'm a FIB...what can I say?).

Appearance: Dark bronze color. Clear. Good, white head that lingered to about an inch throughout the sampling.
Smell: Doughy, bread-y, grassy, clove. Clearly, a wheat beer.
Taste: Herbal, zesty, refreshing. And is there a trace of smoke in this bad-boy? I'm thinking yes.
Mouthfeel: Clean, balanced. Dry-ish finish.
Overall: Dan and Deb give a nice twist on a classic Bavarian-style "kristall" wheat beer. Big props for the darker-than-usual color, and although it has all the required components of a classic German wheat beer, I don't think I'm lying when I say that there is some (at least a hint) of smoke/rauch in this too. Very good indeed!

Served chilled in a Weizen glass

A - pours a clear copper, large head with lots of staying power. Darker than I expected for a kristalweizen, but Dan says on the bottle, this is "his take" on the style, so I'll trust him.

S - spicy, clove, banana, a bit more subtle than its cousin Dancing Man, but definitely present and pleasant.

T - again, lots of spicy clove and banana, not too sweet, a good balance

M - good amount of carbonation, thicker than I expected, yet very clean. No hint of alcohol.

O - I really liked this offering from NG, definitely not just a filtered version of Dancing Man, a unique beer of its own and one I could definitely throw back a few of.

At the time of this review, this is #2 on the "Top Beers - Kristalweizen" list on beeradvocate.com. Bottle shared by Thorpe served in a snifter.

Beer is amber and clear, almost red, with moderate carbonation and a white head, decent retention and some lacing. OK...

Aroma is malty and sweet with a mild yeastiness and wheat to it. OK....

Beer is medium in body and a little sweet with a nice finish, a little grainy, a little wheaty, mostly malty, not a dry finish. I'm done describing this beer.

What exactly about this beer makes it a kristalweizen? Is this from the same brewery that makes Dancing Man? Why not make that into a kristal? What is this thing? I had assumed it was another boring amber until someone told me it as a kristal and then I sort of went crazy railing against the beer. I know it is open to interpretation but seriously? It is RED, it is uncarbonated, the yeast and the wheat don't come through, there is nearly nothing about this beer that tells me that it is a kristal.

Big thanks to BeerFMAndy for getting a nice box of New Glarus out to me. Served in a New Glarus tasting glass.

Pours a medium golden-copper color. Not sure how a Kristalweizen ends up this way, but it's far, far too dark. Short white head. The nose carries some light yeasty notes plus a bit of grain. Not too much going on. The flavor is is similar, with a bit too much bready malt coming through. Body is medium and a bit heavy.

Shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike.

The beer is dark golden colored with a lasting white head. Too dark for the style. The aroma is similar to a dunkel weizen, with wheat and some dark fruit presence. A bit sweet and malty. I would prefer a lighter color and body, with less malt presence. Not what I look for in a beer of this style. Overall, this was just ok.

Poured from bottle into pint glass.

A: Strong looking pour with a cola light brown appearance and a 1 finger off white head that lingers and faintly laces.

S: Sweet fruit, banana, clove, coriander, cinnamon.

T: The banana and bubblegum tastes are present with a nice spicy clove and warming cinnamon taste coming through. Real sweet and spicy at the same time.

M: Very juicy with great mouth coating. Tingly carbonation and pleasant aftertaste.

Aroma is heavy on banana, clove, some vanilla Similar to their Dancing Man Wheat.
Appearance is outstanding. Pour amber orange, and a frothy tan foam so thick was similar to a root beer float.
Taste has a medium sweetness and lightly sour.
Palate is light in body, slick and fizzy on the tongue.
Fun, different than average fall/winter beer.

12 oz. bottle tried 20 Nov 2011. Courtesy of R&S, thank you! Served in the Saint Arnold wheat glass.

Huge tan head fills most of the glass. Medium carbonation. Clear golden brown in color. Aroma is quite bready and sweet, faint herbal-orange quality. Starts with a lot of wheat, light clove and banana. Becomes slightly tart in the middle. Medium body, light ethanol. Finish is wheaty with a mild astringency.

Might need another sample of this one. Seems out of character for NG.

Picked up a single of this recently because, hey, I don't believe I've ever tasted a kristalweizen before. Actually, I had to look up the style to figure out what it was. Filtered hefe? OK. Trust in New Glarus, & always looking for that next great session brew.

Pour is an over-enthusiastic mushroom-cloud of a head, to the point of having to pause before completing the task at hand. Very light, very clear copper body. Nose is a full tank of banana, bubblegum, spicy clove. Packs well for a low-ABV beer.

Laughing Fox. Now I know what a kristalweizen tastes like. All the nose indicators come out for the taste buds too, but in a less aggressive manner. Banana is certainly dominant. Very much like a hefe, to the point that I wonder why this merits a distinct style, & if we need one for filtered vs. unfiltered wild ales. Certainly easy to sip, I can see why one would want to lounge in the backyard & drink these while taking potshots at the wild turkeys trying to dig up your corn rows.

Overall this is a good, solid beer that seems like it was designed for cool nights around the campfire, with a s'more dangling over the coals. Very nice, sessionable beer.

Pours a clear deep amber with lots of foamy off-white head. Nice lacing.

Aroma is slightly sweet--fruity esters, banana, pear, and some green grapes. Reminds me of banana runts a bit.

Upfront taste is slightly bitter, floral, fruity esters, pear, and grape skins. Taste follows through to the finish but with some additional sweetness. Lingering fruity esters.

Light to medium body with medium/high carbonation. Crisp finish.

Light and refreshing with a good aroma and flavor. Really easy to drink--a perfect beer for summer.

Smells of big clove notes with some banana and cracked wheat.

Big clove with some wheat and slight drying, clean bitterness on the finish.

Mouth is light bodied with ample carbonation and a drying finish.

I really do understand why people like wheat beers, but they're just not my cup of tea especially the German style examples that feature the estery yeast notes.

The aroma of this brew is appetizing with notes of clove and banana bread. Some fresh fruity notes are deposited on the palate as the lively copper-hued brew moves through the mouth. The flavors are nice and fresh with orchard fruit and spice. It's earthy and refreshing at the same time. Another nice beer from the folks at New Glarus.

Another great bottle sent down from BeerFMAndy. Thanks!

Poured into a tall weizen glass. This beer pours with a massive amount of foam, which dissipates to leave a thick beige head capping off a clear dark amber beer. This is darker than I had anticipated, but it's a good color to go with the 'Fox' moniker. Sweet aromas stand out. Banana, clove, sugar cookies. Mellow feel. Carbonation is low-to-moderate. Sweet banana bread, mild caramel, clove, bready finish. This was an easy drinker. Sweet beer that was refreshing and uplifting. Not a go-to for me, but a pleasant beer anyways.

S-Strong aroma of cloves with some cinnamon and bananas and a slight bready scent.
T-Lots of clove flavor and cinnamon. Some banana bread flavor as well with s hint of noble hops.
M-Slightly dry with a lot of carbonation.
Overall, for the style this is an outstanding beer. Despite the appearance the flavor is that of a very traditional hefeweizen. I thought the filering would change the flavor but this still has the flavor of a traditional German hefeweizen. A very good beer for the style.

Fills the glass with a crystal clear, medium copper to burnt sienna body and a towering, thick, creamy, light beige head. Great retention and lacing. Beautiful! Very weizen-y nose, with notes of banana, wheat bread, clove, and bubblegum.

Toasted grains with a hint of nuttiness up front. Banana and bread dough flavors follow, framed by hints of clove, bubblegum, and peppery hops. Yeasty, doughy finish, with lingering banana. Medium-bodied, with a slightly creamy feel. Another great wheat beer from New Glarus.

Appearance - Copper. Clear. Medium tall foamy off-white head. Good retention.

Smell - Moderate wheat. Strong banana character, somewhat milder clove. Not picking up the purported cinnamon.

Taste - Dryer than I expected. Mostly wheat/grain flavor. Banana and clove are more subdued in the taste than the aroma. A little citrus in the finish. Light, but bready with fruit and spice accents - a very nice example of the style, in my opinion.

Mouthfeel - Light.
