Found a random 4 pack of this today at Woodman's. Why not?

12oz bottle poured into Mr. Pint.

Appearance: Golden bronze with lots and lots of bubbles. Good amount of off-white head that goes down to a small bit that stays on top of the beer fairly quickly. Leaves nothing on the side of the glass for lacing.

Smell: Yeast, some good citrus notes, a little bit of pepper, little bit of fruity notes.

Taste: Sweet and yeasty. Some pear notes shine through, as does a little bit of other fruit. Definitely a soft, mellow taste to it. A faint bit of pepper at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Smooth. Soft. Medium-light with a little bit of carbonation.

Overall: Very drinkable. Age has done this pretty well on the whole - it's not a sharp hit like I would have expected from when it was first on the shelves. Definitely a nice random surprise at the store!

No date that I can find, but seeing as this is retired I'd say it's got at least a few months on it.

A: Pours a pale gold with a good sized and very fizzy (almost soda-like) white head. Decent retention but no lacing.

S: Grainy with a little citrus and some black pepper to spice it up.

T: Pretty spicy right from the get go. Sweet grains intermingled with lots of black pepper. Spicy, lightly bitter and dry aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied and quite smooth.

O: Easy drinking and spicy saison. Sweet for a saison, which I actually prefer. Fairly simple but I like saisons like this.

Thanks to SourAddict for this one. Served in a DryHop mini-pint bottle.

A - Voluminous creamy, white foam that lingers, leaving behind a few tiny specks of lace. Lightly hazed golden body with oodles of tiny bubbles racing upward.

S - Very musty and earthy, with notes of white pepper, pear skins, grains of paradise, and light stone fruit sweetness. Get a tad more fruity and estery as it warms.

T - The taste is sweeter, with notes of candi sugar and pale malts amid fruity Belgian yeast, stone fruits, starchy pear, and perhaps a hint of ginger. There's far less pepper and spice from the yeast here. There's some mild tang and lemon in the finish, but I don't think there's any wild yeast at work here.

M - Some surprising alcohol warming to this; more than I expected for 6.5%. Medium-full body, a bit of grit to it. Pleasant carbonation, with a largely dry finish that lends only mild lingering stickiness.

D - It's a bit too sweet for my tastes, and it seems unnecessarily boozy for what should be a moderate ABV brew. As always, New Glarus shows their skill and craftsmanship here; just not really I look for from this style.

Coffee Grounds - Eau Claire, WI

Let's have a see how this one has been doing over time. The pour is still beautiful. A peachy orange body with carbonation so active it rushes in torrents to the surface, fills my tulip. The ecru head quickly rises to two fingers in height, peaks, and just as quickly sinks to an impressively thick cap with a meringue like gloss. The lacing sticks briefly after each drink before sliding back into the body.

The nose is jammed full of stone fruit. Peaches galore mix with musty apricot & nectarines and are in your face from the get go. Gritty Bartlett pear and soft green apple are also present. Some of the spice has mellowed over time but white pepper and candi sugar remain while a drying booziness tickles the nose. I prefer the softer spice now compared to the fresh.

The flavor has become a little muddled but the spice has faded. Stone fruits lead the way again with that gritty pear kicking in mid-palate. There's a surprising amount of booziness but it's very clean and actually adds some depth. The white pepper is back and a touch of cardamom pushes through before a floral hop finish. It's still drinking well.

The mouthfeel is close to, but not quite at, the level of Belgian saisons. The body is on the light side of medium with an airy and active but soft carbonation. The bubbles make this beer frothy as it hits your tongue.

I'm torn; fresh this was a more intense beer but I'm not a big fan of spice driven saisons. With a little age the spice has faded and it's much more fruit forward which is nice but the fruit is slightly muddled. Don't get me wrong here, this is a damn good beer fresh or with a short amount of time. I'd like to see this made again.
