Notes/Commercial Description:
Severe Drought, we shared the farmer’s horror as Wisconsin’s cherry crop failed! Dan bought what cherries he could. The Apple crop fared better. Then joy! A grand Wisconsin cranberry harvest. What will Dan brew with Apples, Cranberries and Cherries? Oh my! You hold the happy accident of Wisconsin’s favorite fruit aged in oak with an almost magical wild fermentation. Serendipity is a wondrous celebration that sparkles your senses and dances across your palate. A kaleidoscope of flavor discovered by accident in a sour ale!

Cheers to the unexpected.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter, the beer was a deep brown color with a reddish hint. A slight white head topped the glass with noticeably big bubbles most noticeable at the sides of the glass. In the aroma, one detects the sharp fruits notes, particularly the berries. In the initial taste, one gets the sour of cranberry and cherries, apple on a lighter scale, and an impressive woodiness. Hidden are notes of caramel, honey, and clove. The apple becomes more apparent toward the back of the taste. The sourness lingers, dancing on the tongue several minutes after the swallow. In the aftertaste, the sour fruits fade leaving the oak expose to your taste buds. The thick texture allows the taste to linger a great while.

Between this beer, Raspberry Tart, and Belgian Red, I think this is my new favorite. The carbonation is not as strong as Belgian Red, and the sour note as not as overwhelming as Raspberry Tart. I really hope Serendipity sticks around for a while.

750ml into a cervoise. The brew pours a clear ruby tinted to copper color with just shy of 3 fingers of tan froth. The cap collapses leaving some sudsy lace sticking in patches and stringy fingers on the glass. A swirl revives a pretty solid finger of silk that fades slowly.

The aroma of this is fresh and fruity with a solid amount of tart indication also emitting from the glass. The cherry quality leads the way in the nose with a slightly medicinal aspect almost like cherry luden cough drops. There is a bit of a dusty or dirty quality also found in the nose that lends an earthen sort of feel all across the middle. That dusty aspect gives this a real natural essence. As the brew warms up, more of a focus switches to the apple character.

The flavor upfront is tart with a character of unripened cherries blended with cranberry. Across the middle is some apple or pear skin character that almost wants to take this brew off in a direction of cider but not quite. The tartness blended with residual sugar makes for almost a medicinal feel to this brew that mildly burns the back of the throat. While this is a pretty juicy fruit beer, there are trace moments of herbal hops coming through that let you know this is still beer. The warmer the brew gets in my glass, the more the apple starts to come through that was initially masked a bit.

This is a medium bodied offering with a modest amount of carbonation. It is very easy drinking with the alcohol seemingly nonexistent. My only gripe is the medicinal aspect that pokes out at times but overall this is pretty good. You get everything as advertised in this: cherry, cranberry and apple in equal parts. I am impressed but this isnt something I would drink regularly.

750 mL bottle to a snifter.

Appearance - Bright red with a nice off white head. Settles to an offset collar.

Smell - Lots of cherry. Like its more standard brothers, it's all fruit juice in the smell. Apple and cranberry standout surprisingly well.

Taste - Follows the smell exactly. Carbonated fruit juice. The cranberry and apple dominate more. Dry in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Well it's drinkable as hell. But it's juice. Medium carbonation.

Overall - These New Glarus offerings blur the line between sodas and beer. I can't in good conscience rate it as a great beer, no matter how tasty it is.
