The looks of this brew are fine, yet still its weakest link. A clear, deep brownish tinged amber ale was poured into my glass to produce an almost two finger light tan head. Not much for retention, the head quickly settled to a fine cap and collar, even despite it being fairly highly carbonated initially. Not much for lacings either.
The nose on this brew, however, more than makes up for its lackluster appearance. Hazelnuts, toffee, and a hint of powdered cocao from the malts, A mild aroma of cured hay and a slight earthy woodiness also present form the hops.
An excellently crafted nut brown, easily one of my favorites of the style. Creamy hazenuts, rich toffee, almost toasty whole grain crusty bread, and the light touch of cocoa powder from the 6 different malt varieties, all in harmony with each other. Mildly bittered with flavours of cured hay, earth, and a slight woodiness, with a very mild hint of citrus.
An almost medium bodied creamy ale. Finishes slightly dry due to its toasted whole grain quality and hints of grain husk. Very nicely balanced, features the rich malts, but the mild bittering helps to round out this tasty brew. Initially overcarbonated for the style, but some time in the glass easily dealt with that minor quibble.
Very drinkable, approachable, and sessionable ale. Perfect for Spring, Fall, or a cooler Summer night. A great beer for someone looking to branch out from drinking piss yellow lagers (some of which may actually be a damn fine beer) and move on to trying something slightly darker. Ive come back to this brew a few times and always been impressed, and will continue to come back to this one.
