Thick dark mahogany color with a very slight transparency. a very thick caramel colored head. A great weizen sent. wheaty and malt-tastic. Never had a dark wheat beer before. Has an unusual porter like taste to it. An interesting breed this weizen and bock. It has that tart malt sting and the dark bitter bite. Not a bad beer.

Poured into a weizen glass a clouded mahogany brown with a little amber-like tinge to it,a big blooming off white head atop.Aromas are of green apple and clove mainly,a little banana shows thru as well,flavors are a good mix of dark fruit and a slight puckering green apple with some underlying chocolate and clove, medium to full makes the flavors seem fuller.A solid weizenbock here it has rich flavors and a nice feel,Plank makes some good beers in the general style.

Weizenbock is perhaps the most underrated beer style out there today. Just thought we'd throw that out there.

Once poured, this beer kicks up lots of head from the carbonation--not gushing, but very active, which is par for the style. The foam really shows off the head reten- tion as well. Murky mahogany color, the trademark ap- pearance for the style. Spicy nose shows murmurs of ripe fruit, alcohol, mild phenols, yeast and a hint of lemon. Brazen crispness wakes up the palate even with a sizeable body. Big explosions of flavor: clove, bready wheat, fruit esters, nutty yeast, tart plum, bitter phenols and toasted grain among them. Some warmth comes from the alcohol, but is de- ceiving for the most part. Phenols are quite prevalent, with an herbal medicinal flavor. From middle to end, graininess pushes through with a toasted husky note. Mild hop character. Finishes slightly dry, with a lingering grain flavor.

This one's a bit rough around the edges, but most Weizenbocks are. We dig it--beer in the raw, sort of. A steaming hot bowl of goulash is bold enough to pair with this beer.

Ok, if you've been reading my reviews from today it won't surprise you in the least that I received this bottle after Beeradvocate.com's German Beer Fest in 2007.

Privatbrauerei Plank Laaber Seit 1617. Do people realize 1617 was 400 years ago? It's mindboggling. Think about that the next time you drive by a mini-mall. Hell, think about that the next time you drive by the Capitol in Washington, DC.

I'm enjoying this beer from a Harpoon Ale mug, which is one of my favorite vessels in my collection.

Appearance: A lingering, mountainous white head. I want to go sledding on it. Deep amber body.

Smell: All I can get is malt and a little bit of fruit.

Taste: Malt, and a touch of sourness. Dates and raisins.

Mouthfeel: Stickiness that lingers a bit.

Drinkability: There's a heaviness to this brew, without the high ABV that would limit the amount one might drink this brew, but this is definitely quality over quantity.

2nd favorite out of the 3 Plank biers they were carrying at D'z. Pours a dark russet brown body with a foaming tan head, great carbonation levels going on. Aroma has a nice dark toasted malt tone with raisin and tart apples, very nice spiciness about it as well. Flavor was banana bread with a layered charred malt character adding a touch of smokiness, with a caramelized malt finish. Mouthfeel was medium to fuller bodied alcohol was evident but not overpowering in anyway. Overall drinkability was great another excellent German wheat beer served properly in a hefeweizen glass, my kind of weizenbock this competes or beats Ayinger's version.

Plank- Weizenbock

A- Deep amber brown with an enormous frothy head. Excellent head retention and lacing. Big vicious carbonation.
S- Strong clove, banana and brown sugar.
T- Brown sugar/ molasses malt with an equal balance of cloves and wheat. Big strong flavor could become a little cloying after a few.
M- Big chewy malt, slightly sweet, with a bubbly flavorful finish. Slight alc. twang in the end.

Overall- A solid Weizenbock! My 1st of the Plank beers and delicious!

Gorgeous beer, with a glowing copper rust under an enormous fluffy head made of zillions of tiny bubbles. Incredible head retention.

Aroma is banana, apple skins, nougat, light toffee, even lighter milk chocolate.

Flavor is a mixture of both good and bad. The good is the banana, earthy wheat, obvious yeast (nearly Belgian in character) and traces of caramel and toffee. Nearly ruining all that is a sour pucker, as well as a steely, nearly medicinal bite. Like sucking on a penny. Not sure what's going on there, but it's not easy to get down. I bought this at a reputable store (City Beverage, W-S, NC), never found other beers there to be old, expired, light-stricken or otherwise unacceptable. Maybe this one is indeed old, or maybe I just don't care for it. And the mouthfeel is a little too sharp and over-carbonated for the style.

So off balance. Glad I have a second bottle...will revise the review if that one performs significantly better. I can tell there's a great beer in here, but as of right now, I've had many better Weizenbocks. C'est la vie.

A: Deep brown upon initial inspection. Golden and reddish hues mixed in with a prominent brown front. Head was bustling, huge, chunky and fluffy at first, then dissipated with not much lace.

S: huge malts, sweetened and toasty. A bit of spiciness in the mix with soft fruits

T: husky malts, caramel sweets, fruits reminiscent of light banana, raisins and other various dark fruits. Fruits fused with cinnamon and cloves that give some bite. Just a touch of toffee and the malts keep things in check and make the brew go round! Nice mix

M: a touch sweet, mild to heavy body, and huge carbonation presence...much like champagne bubbly, makes it kind of spicy.

D: a bit to bubbly for me at times (not a bad thing), but is definitely worth the try. A solid brew and that makes me smile. Great flavors and a great vibe all around

This beer was fine, tasy, but not overly drinkable because of the sourness in there. Thick mouthffel, its filling, it looks good and dark. Not overally complex, bang the style but the only beer you can drink in a night. Lots of chocolate malt. Big malt aroma. Bannanas.

A chilly October sunset at Zum Schneider brought me to order a Plank Dunkler Weizenbock, and it turned out to be just the right beer for the season. A crispness was in the air and the leaves were turning... fall was here. I could smell chestnuts roasting from afar. We'd just past Oktoberfest and it was time for something with a little more girth.

The beer was clear and deep-copper with crimson, amber, and orange highlights beneath a bone-white head that held fairly well and left some nice lacing about the glass.

The aroma fit in perfectly with the season with a somewhat malty/wheaty and slightly caramelish base with a burnt-sugar/smoky edge with a hint of spice and phenol. It wasn't rich, full or "sticky", but more crisp and clean.

In the mouth it was medium-full bodied, and crisp with a fine-bubbled, slightly zesty carbonation that delicately pricked the tongue.

The flavor was a subtle-touch tart with notes of lemon and wheat, followed by the typical under-note of banana backed by some mild spice. A delicate caramelish edge widened it, but to be honest, it falls more into "dunkle weizen" than "dunkle weizenbock" character. The strength is there, but the richness is lacking.

Overall, I found it quite enjoyable, and surprisingly drinkable given the strength. There are better examples of the style out there, but I'd certainly suggest trying it.

Having tried the Plank heller weizenbock last week, I thought I'd give its darker twin a try tonight...

Appearance -- Much like the heller version, this one provides an astoundingly full head. I reduced my pour to a faint trickle in order to minimize the foam (as compared to the volcanic eruption I poured out of the heller), and I still wound up with a good three fingers of frothy, off-white head. The body of this beer looks awesome -- deep, opaque brown, with amber/mahogany hints around the edges. Yeast distributes itself readily throughout the glass.

Smell -- Just about identical to the heller: banana esters are prevalent, with a hint of roastiness and a vague, fleeting cherry scent. The aroma is inviting (and, thus, a bit deceptive).

Taste -- Given my expectations (based on this beer's appearance and smell, and the not-too-badness of the heller version), this is a real disappointment. Ever had Weyerbacher Slam Dunkel? If so, try to imagine that, but cut with water and a drop or two of that "Real Lemon" stuff that comes in a lemon-shaped squeeze bottle. If not, think of a standard dunkel hefeweizen, but with the same water/lemon additives. There is also a not-entirely-subtle hint of metal, calling to mind copper or blood. Additionally, I can pick up something resembling brettanomyces' unique flavor in this beer. You might call this mutant brew a hybrid of dark hefe weizen and a Berliner weisse. Strange, and not my favorite...but still not bad enough to call "bad."

Mouthfeel -- I guess I hinted at this in the "Taste" section, but this beer has far less body than I expected, given its rich appearance and aroma. It's surprisingly watery, and it's almost overwhelmed with softer-than-soda fizz. Think Alka-Seltzer bubbles -- tons of them. This beer foams up in your mouth, making each swallow expand your esophagus on the way down. Weird.

Drinkability -- Marginally above average, I guess. The alcohol is well-hidden, but the flavor and mouthfeel don't really appeal to me. There are much better examples of the style out there. Speaking of "the style," I'd call this a dunkel hefeweizen, not a weizenbock. The 7.50% abv is somewhat higher than expected for a standard hefeweizen, but it's not the kind of hefty, strong brew I'd expect in a bottle labeled "weizenbock." Besides that, the traditional toasted/dried fruit flavors of a dark weizenbock are only vaguely perceptible, and that's if you use your imagination.

For me, the two best German weizenbocks out there are Schneider Aventinus and Weihenstephaner Vitus (which are drastically different from one another, but still great). This one doesn't come close.

Pours an effervescent amber/caramel with 4 fingers+ of rocky light sand colored head. Superior head retention & lacing

S: Slight bubblegum notes & a little pepper. Also slight booze notes.

T: Fruitty(apricots/dates)/bready with bubblegum & a hint chocolate up front. Slight brown sugar, toffee, & pumpernickel notes as this warms. Finishes bready, peppery & fruitty & quenching for the style

MF: Rich, medium/heavy bodied with perfect carbonation

Drank real easy for the abv, this is a nice weizenbock! The best one from this brewery IMO. I'd pay $5 for this again, easily, wish it was cheaper, though. I like this better than adventius I think. so say my ratings, need to do a side by side comparison!

Poured from a 500 mL. capped bottle (No Date) into a weizen glass.

An agonizingly slow pour yields a 4-finger cream-colored head that slowly dwindles down to a 1/2-finger coating that never goes away. The body is a slightly hazy amber brown with a fantastic amount of carbonation bubbles streaming upward from nearly every concievable point of origin. Some great lacing can be seen clinging desperately to the glass between sips but unfortunately never lasts.

Strong wheat aromas offer up the typical notes of overly ripe bananas and bubble gum. This is joined by some not-so-common aromas of brown sugar, golden raisins, and plums, adding a fair amount of complexity and sweetness to the nose. As the beer warms, the alcohol becomes slightly noticeable but plays more into the sweet fruity aromas.

Each sip starts with flavors of grainy wheat, whole-grain bread, cloves, ripe bananas, and candied sugar. Swallowing releases significantly more wheat and banana flavors. These are soon accompanied by an oily lemon flavor that ends up lingering on the tongue as an aftertaste. As the beer warms, a slight alcohol warmth can be noticed in the back of the throat.

The medium body is great for administering the flavors to your tastebuds. The high carbonation cuts through the body with ease, fizzing away whenever it comes into contact with your tongue. The swallow is rather foamy, but that is to be expected for the style.

Pours a nice muddy brown color with a pillowy tan head that dissipated into a nice cap. The smell is of wheat malt, bananas and clove. The taste is of apples, banana and some other sweet fruit. I got a slight wave of chocolate malt but that didn't last very long. Sweeter and less dry than their hefe. The feel is moderate with fizzy carbonation, finished well balanced. A very easy to drink weizenbock, not much in the way of malty taste but very balanced and smooth.

I was looking for Vitus but the store did not have that. The clerk recommended this beer instead. Pours a dark copper color with a large white head that lasts a long time. Heavy lacing is left on the glass. I do not get a lot from the aroma but I do detect some cloves and banana. Also a hint of alcohol. The flavor is awesome. There is a reason I like the darker side of wheat beers. Fruity esters abound in the flavor. The alcohol is well hidden. Finishes clean and neutral. The body is nothing special but is light and well carbonated. I have not had Vitus yet, but it would have to be really something for it to be better than this beer.

2004 World Cup Gold medal.

A: dark burnt cranberry color with a huge rocky 3 finger off white head. The lacing stuck to the sides of the glass nicely while the visible carbonation was light.

S: some fresh cranberries, bananas, cloves, and a variety of spices.

T: The initial flavor was malty with a big dark roasted character and caramel along with a charred smokiness. There was a big doughy palate, some dry chocolate and a earthy bitterness from the hops. The finish was smooth with a good smokiness detected and rich roasted malt lacing on the tongue leaving some bacon and campfire notes upon warming. A very good dark roasted malt bill and was very yeasty for a doppelbock, with some dry fruitiness, alcohol, and a good spiciness.

M: Nice mineral mouthful, spicy and smoky

D: A very good recommend and very good drink

Somewhat hazed reddened amber with a modest head. Spicy, cidery aroma...sweet bread, raisins, mild "holiday" spices, clove, and chocolate. Just a bit of dried banana. More spiced flavors than a typical weizenbock. Dark fruit, apples, banana and bubblegum. Tart and drying with high carbonation that keeps the creaminess down. Pretty good.

I had this at Quencher's Saloon in Chicago. $7 for a 500ml brown bottle with no freshness date. Served in a weizenglass.

The beer poured a cloudy dark brown color with half the glass filled with a rocky and creamy tan head that lasted quite awhile. Decent lacing as well.

This smelled like one of those chocolate covered malt ball candies. It was wonderful.

Big malty flavor right up front. Chocolate and caramel sweetness along with some toasted grain flavors. There is also a plum-like fruitiness and tartness to it that blends well with the malts. Bitterness is low but the hops are noticeable. Alcohol is well hidden.

Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is between moderate to medium.

This is an absolutely delicious weizenbock. Hope I can find it at a liquor store so I won't have to pay $7 a bottle to drink it.

1 pt. 9 oz. 7.5% ABV. Pours a cloudy chestnut/brown color. Off-white, foam cap head. Head trickles to a nice rocky pillow that last for quite some time. A few tiny bubbles streaming from the bottom of the glass.

Banana, and many other fruits seem to hit me first in the nose. A bit of caramel, milk chocolate, and alcohol also chime in. What a nose on this!

A bit of whaet tartness comes first, followed by a hint of caramel and lots of fruit. Bananas and berries seem to come to mind. Just a hint of alcohol. Seems to have just a slight earthy hop finish. This is certainly all about the wheat and the yeast.

Very well balanced. Good body and carbonation. Very well made. Excellent. I could go for this often.

Poured from a bottle into an Erdinger Weissbier glass. It's a stunning pour. The beer is crystal clear, very dark brown, and sports a huge rocky off-white head. I roused a little yeast from the bottom of the bottle in order to impart a little more haziness (and flavor) into the glass. The nose has a very prominent grape-like component to it that I really like. Behind the grapes, I get bready notes and some yeastiness. I don't get many spicy phenols.

Medium-full body with lots of complex flavors that follow the nose well. I get big flavors of sweet, bready malt and lots of dark fruit. The grainy wheat notes arrive around mid-palate and carry through the finish, contributing a pleasant tartness to the refreshing qualities of the beer. No hop bitterness. No evident booziness. High carbonation really opens the palate and contributes a lively feel to the beer, though a slightly creamier feel would have been welcome.

The marriage of subtle sweet malt, lots of port-like dark fruit, and tart wheat really make this beer delicious. A very nice example of the style. Thoroughly enjoyable.
