Plank Bavarian Hefeweizen 5.2% abv, Plank Bavarian Hefeweizen pours clean cloudy brownish gold with a persistent 3” off-white to tan rocky head that leaves extensive lace. The nose is clove and banana with traces of bubble gum over light bread. Wheat to bready malt introduces the palate forming a base for the clove and banana finishing with a touch of bitterness followed by a lingering bubble gum presence. This is a well balanced, well carbonated beer that has a creamy, spritzy finish.

as good as this one still is, its my least favorite of the very impressive plank lineup. its a little watered down, not as rich and creamy as i like in the style, and the yeast doesnt quite pop with that banana clove complex we all love in these beers. the pour is insane though, clear for a hefe, but with a white head as light as a cloud, and so structurally in tact that it rises inches above the rim of my glass, never receding, and looking every bit like those old cartoons portraying comically heady brews. the nose on it has a minerality in with the lighter banana muffin yeast, its not quite briney, but its moving in that direction. i think it detracts from the yeast, which to me should be the star of the hefeweizen show. not quite enough wheat in here to give it the bigger body i like, but those who prefer a less intense take on the style may enjoy the drinkability of this one. the carbonation is high, really high actually, but it has a soda sort of bigness to it, an odd feeling going down. overall this is a very well made beer, but less expressive in some of the classic hefeweizen features than others. i still greatly prefer the weihenstephaner hefe.

500 ml bottle into weizen glass, unknown bottle code. Pours very hazy orange copper color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big banana, orange peel, lemon zest, pear, apple, grape, clove, wheat, bubblegum, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, and hop notes; with good strength. Taste of orange peel, banana, pear, apple, grape, lemon zest, wheat, bread, bubblegum, clove, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Light wheat tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of orange peel, banana, pear, apple, grape, wheat, bread, bubblegum, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, and hop flavors; with a nice malt/fruitiness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Hefeweizen. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of yeast, malt, and hop flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Plank Hefeweizen. From 16.9-ouncer to weizen glass.

Dirty brownish-yellow with a loose head of two fingers height. Sticking a bit. 3.5

Spicy clove aroma with pale husky grains, unripe banana, and some coppery flavors. Lightly toasted crackery wheat malts. 3.5

Hmmm... at first, I'm curious as to the freshness of this bottle. Tart, stale wheaty flavor with some green herbal hops and a few metallic off-notes. A little bit of clove spice and faint green banana. This beer is particularly tart, almost sour. It's actually pretty refreshing, but attenuated. The more it warms, the more a very green banana shows up in the flavor. The clove is coming out too, but there's a peppery bite in the finish, as well. It wasn't obvious for some reason at first, but the tartness is very lemon-lime. Definitely super-dry for a hefeweizen also. Low sugar content, a non-fruity yeast strain, and overly tart wheat malts. An entirely different spin on the style. 4.0

Thinner body. Medium carbonation. Some pucker from that unexpected tartness. 3.0

I really want to try this again. Lemony and tart, almost bitter green banana, light clove, lime notes... somebody tell me that I need to revisit. It's actually pretty fascinating. Can't necessarily say that I recommend it. But, I did enjoy it. 4.0

an exceptional savor hef which reminds something more formally german with a nice dry feel. a cloudy orange with a good distribution. i say this to conform the freshness. this was not clotty or chunky. hop orientation was minimal a bit in the nose along with some straw, and honey notes. palate is not sharp dry like but a balance on the middle of the tongue. a bit of grassy mineral, some wheat pulp, and banana bread all dried with a bit of toast and minerals. would say its on par with the schniederweisse tap 7 series beer.

A: Pours a surprisingly dark, clear golden amber with a puffy white head. For a hefeweizen, this beer oddly lacks the hazy, unfiltered appearance normally asscoiated with this style. In my opinion, it looks more like a darker-than-average kristallweizen.

S: Aromas of caramel, wheat, banana, cream, and clove fill the nose. The caramel aroma is a change-up if there ever was one, indicating that Braurei Michael Plank likely uses a different type of malt in this beer than many other traditional Bavarian weissbier breweries.

T: After a crisp, grainy entry, this beer displays flavors of minerals, cream, vanilla, wheat, clove, banana, and bubblegum. The finish is clipped with notes of cream, minerals, vanilla, and banana. Oddly, this beer flits between mineral sharpness and fruity sweetness, making it difficult to focus on the individual flavors present. To my dismay, the fruit and spice flavors that are traditionally associated with hefeweizens are something of an afterthought here, emerging only briefly after the beer has rested on the palate for a couple of seconds.

M: Medium to full in body and dry with firm, spritzy carbonation. One of the greatest characteristics of Bavarian hefeweizens is their high drinkability, which this beer sadly lacks.

O: I find this to be a rather atypical Bavarian hefeweizen. For me, the appeal of this style lies in its fruit and spice sweetness and light body, neither of which this beer really has. As you may have guessed by now, I do not find this to be a good example of the style and would not recommed it to anyone. There are much better weissbiers out there.

Bottled purchased from Binny's in Schaumburg, IL.
Bottle has some ID on it, no idea if this is a "bottled on" date.
Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass.

Pours a huge, billowing head that is solid enough to form a column standing up out of the glass. Head composed of tiny bubbles that collapse into themselves to form a tight, off-white mass of foam. Declines over several minutes to a solid cap, 0.5cm high, on top of the beer at all times. Body is dark orange-brown out of light, lighter orange-brown when in. Hazy from suspended yeast, carbonation that supports the head barely visible.

Aroma is of bread, clove, and allspice. Slight applesauce and, even slighter, banana. While not overly complex, the scents are pleasant and distinct.

Dark, intense, and fairly heavy in flavor, like brown-sugared, cooked bananas with hints of clove and allspice, served on slices of toasted, dense German bread. Yeast and black pepper mildly enter this mixture in the mid-taste. Aftertaste of clove, allspice, banana, and diluted wheat malt.

Carbonation is strong, perhaps a bit high for the body, but it fades quickly, giving a generally crisp mouthfeel. Body is around medium heaviness, possibly medium-heavy. Finish is quite dry.

Is this a hefeweizen or a dunkelweizen? Either way, this would be much more highly ranked if it were more widely available. A delicious, hearty weizen from a brewery that needs to be more talked about. Definitely one to seek out and try repeatedly.

At D'z in Regent Square, this was the best hefeweizen I've ever had hands down pure excellence in a bottle. Appears a clouded deep golden hefe infused wheat beer. Egg shell white head thick vibrant carbonation flowing nicely, even lacing. Aroma has hints of banana clove and a mild spiced fruity apple tones with a touch of bubblegum. Sharp wheat with mild citrus notes, flavors are awesome hands down one of the most flavorful and easily drinking hefeweizens I've ever had. More banana clove and citrus notes just make this beer so refreshing. Mouthfeel has medium body with a nice flowing effervescent carbonation level, perfect for gulping down in the warm weather. Like I said, favorite hefeweizen hands down the best of the style I've ever had.

Plank is another of the small, family owned traditional weissbier breweries that has finally made its way to U.S. shores from its small town home in Bavaria. Located just west of Regensburg in Laaber, this 16th generation brewery has won gold at the past 4 World Beer Cups and was awarded "Small Brewer of the Year" in 2006.
Their weissbier is a little darker than the macro versions that many Americans are used to, but the additional body holds up well during import.
The head is soft and fluffy and the taste is balanced, with hints of the traditional banana/clove without being overwhelming. The mouthfeel is full, soft and slightly fruity.
This is an outstanding traditional weissbier!

Cloudy old gold color. Big initial head reduces fairy quickly. Smell and taste of spiced apple cider - not the classic clove and banana one would expect. Overall a pleasant quaff.

Bought this off the bottom shelf. Looked like it had been there awhile. Had trouble to get the yeast off the bottom.

Pours dark honey gold with a huge white foamy head, good sticky lace, and some nice bubbles rising.

Wheat, grain, yeast, and some spice and light banana.

Good yeast and wheat, with some spice and sweet wheat dominant and light bitterness. There is a bit of a soda-water element, and it works. Good balance and strength of flavor. Grain forward brew.

A bit too fizzy, but light boded and...ok.

Very easy to drink, and appropriate strength of flavor. Works for me.

Poured bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark gold color that is only mildly cloudy. It has a huge head.

Smell: While it does have a sweet wheat smell that is pleasant, it's a little bland all around. No banana or clove aromas typical of the style.

Taste: Same as the smell. Has the wheat flavor, but not the usual background tastes to fill it out. It almost tastes more like an American Wheat Ale like S.A. Summer Ale as opposed to a true Hefeweizen.

Mouthfeel: A little bit thin for the style, but not too watery or anything.

Drinkability: While this is a good beer, I was a little disappointed. I could drink it again, but I will probably get something better if I'm in the mood for a hefe.

Orange colored beer w/ intense carbonation so I get a large head that dies very slow; anticipation is killing me. A lemony, citric zest aroma along with hints of banana and something like grape b/c I pick up something that can be decribed as vinous. A real smooth light-bodied beer w/ a crisp lemon/citric touch but also gives off a real sweet edge thanks to a plush wheat/yeast touch. Tad dry and bitter on backend thanks to minor hopping and complemented by minor spicey cloviness. But the real draw of the beer is the even mix of citric/fruit tastes (hints of banana and lemon) along w/ a nice sweet edge.

Think "old-world wheat beer."

Completely hazed orange-colored brew; nothing shy about the head as it creeps to the rim of the glass. No question about the strength of its head retention, either. Mild clove aroma, a bit lemony and bready, with mild phenols and a tame fruitiness in the background. Impec- cably smooth, with such a beautiful medium body that it just rolls right over the tongue. Big splashes of spicy wheat and mildly nutty yeast hit the taste buds first. Hops are very modest with a small squirt of bitterness. Soft tones of clove with a fruitiness wrapped around them. Quick flashes of lemon and banana in the middle. Very wheaty finish; bready with a clean grain flavor in the drying finish.

Yet another prime example for US brewers to notice when they're thinking of brewing a Hefeweizen. Simply put, your beer does not have to taste entirely of clove and banana. Thankfully, Plank is spot-on with subtle yet complex charac- teristics with a great balance to boot. A chicken kabob Greek salad with extra- cured olives and feta cheese would make an excellent pairing.

A - poured much darker than I expected. I had to double check to make sure I did not grab the dunkelweiss by mistake. Pours a copper color with a massive off white and fluffy head that sticks around for a while.

S - Banana, clove, and bready yeast. Fairly typical aroma here.

T - Definitely heavy on the yeast upfront. Little bit of fruit and spice through the middle and finishes rather sharp with a peppery bite.

M - Light and smooth, spot on for the style.

D - An easy drink on a warm day. However, not sure this is worth the price since it is not much better than other, cheaper varieties.

Appears a hazy orange toned amber with a fluffy white cap that slowly fades into a gentle pilow. Scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of citrus, herbs, ripe bananas, and grains of paradise.
Taste is of the aromas with some yeasty, freshly baked bread and a touch of pepper and cloves in the background.
Mouthfeel is light bodied, spritzy, and dry.

A: a clouded orange yellow runs amuck with golden swirls throughout. Somewhat on the darker side for a Hefe. A good chunk of dense foam formed, sat, and stayed for the duration of the drink. Lacing is average and looks nice

S: yeasty banana breaded aroma. Some cloves and various spices compliment the overall smell. Kinda mild

T: the palate is full of banana custard and flaked sugar pie crust. Jogging my memory, I would have to say that this is one of the more delectable Hefe's I have had in a while. It is smooth, chock full of wheat, slightly dry and crisp, and loaded with clove encrusted bananas. Tasty

M: very nice feel and great crisp character. The body is light to mild. Way to easy to drink and full of character

D: hands down one the tastier Hefe's around town. Just a pleasing drinker overall

Poured this with the yeast swirled in. Served in a big crystal mug.

A: Cloudy, dark orange with a tan hue. Sediment cloud stays on top half.

S: Significant grape character with wheat, dark citrus and flowers.

T: White grapes, malted barley and dark fruit traces throughout the yeasty, wheaty body. More dark fruit on the finish. Significantly more fruity than most Hefeweizens...kind of reminds me of an Aventinus mixed with a wheat beer.

D: Pretty drinkable though a little too yeasty for my liking.

Value: $3.99 for a 1 pt 9 fl oz bottle. Not bad.

Beer poured from a 0.5L bottle into a wheat beer glass. Beer is relatively clear (wasnt served with yeast due to bar tender error). Carbonation on this beer is amazingly high, seriously high. Beer is darker than the typical hefeweizen due to the use of barley but it looks great. Big white head and lots of lacing on the glass.

Beer doesn't have much of a smell, kind of bready / yeasty. There are a few esters in there but overall a little weak.

This beer is a great session beer. It is simple and wet and has a thin mouthfeel. I added the yeast half way through, it adds a lot of complexity to the beer that wasn't there to start. More esters, lots of sweetness, no real aftertaste. Drinkability high and the mouthfeel is good.

16.9oz bottle, no code dating whatsoever... Into the Schneider Weisse glass...

A - Wow! is this beer chunky! This has to be twice the yeast I'm used to seeing in a Hefe. Very cloudy burnt orange body with a very non-weizen looking head. Off white head featured small bubbles, three fingers of head with little retention for a wheat beer, and no lacing. Quite frankly, a rare Hefeweizen meant for a clay mug...

S - Sweet orange and lemon tart aromas somehow blend with graham cracker/ amber malt sweetness without feeling too disjointed. I found the aroma to be quite yeasty, with some banana sweetness, and a nice spicy backbone of clove. Hops contributed grassy and earthy notes.

T - Starts out again blending graham cracker/amber malt flavors with building lemon tart and banana sweetness. The spiciness is a big highlight, starting with a mild clove bite at the midpalate, hitting pretty hard with ground black pepper at the swallow, and lingering long after the beer has left the mouth. Hops also contribute a nice mild grassy flavor at the finish.

M - A mid to full bodied hefeweizen with a slightly silky and oily mouthfeel that still maintains prickly carbonation.

D - There were many things I really enjoyed about this beer; the big spice in the finish, the appetizing lemon tart quality, the good balance and flavors of the hops. But the amber malts made this a hard beer for me to love, working against the other flavors and to a lesser extent the other aromas instead of with them. I understand that this is meant to be a fuller bodied wheat ale, but it doesn't seem to work as well for me as other dark Hefeweizens I have enjoied. That, and to quote my wife, this beer "looks like diarrhea."

Pours a cloudy dark golden yellowish orange with golden ripe banana hues when held to a light source and a three finger fizzy white head that quickly settles into a lasting cap.

Bready yeasty aroma with hints of spicy clove and pepper as well as some ripe banana and subtle citrus peel notes. Slightly tart/funky smelling with a bit of earthy hops.

Medium bodied and slightly hop forward with a prominent spicy clove, pepper and lemon zest flavor. Bready yeasty body with hints of ripe banana, sweet citrus fruit, mostly lemon peel with subtle orange/corriander notes. Very earthy tasting with a bit of dry hops that lasts into the dry, bitter and tart finish. There is definitely an earthy sour/tartness going on that balanced out the spiciness and the crisp flavor of the fruit. It adds a bit of complexity but kind of muted he others flavors, keeping it from becoming overly sweet. This tartness makes the beer pretty refreshing even though it is kind of odd and adds to its overall drinkability. An interesting take on the style but not something that you must sample.

Poured from a half liter bottle into a weizen glass.

Appearance: Darker than most hefeweizens, looks more like a pale ale. The head didn't have the best, retention.

Smell: Ripe bananas and dark fruit.

Taste: Fruity and sweet. Ripe bananas with a clove aftertaste.

Poured into a Weizen glass.

A: Cloudy apple cider with very active carbonation. It's quite dark for a non-dunkel, to be honest. A fluffy eggshell cap starts big and does its best to stick around. Sadly, the beer left no lace.

S: Cloves, over ripe banana, fresh baked biscuits and a hint of apple.

T: Begins with a banana and apple sweetness, followed by a hearty dose of clove. A mild yeast bread flavor comes along for the ride. Finishes with a lingering spiced apple cider flavor.

M: The grainy body has a high level of prickly carbonation.

D: Crisp, spicy and refreshing. This beer has everything I expect of this style. Perfect for a hot summer day.

poured into a wiessen glass.

poured in 2 phases, 1st the upper 3/4 poured a golden glow, slightly hazy with mild white head. Then, swished the bottle and poured the last 1/4 to reveal a vast world of yeast! the beer IMEDIATELY became cloudy, a dark gold, almost caramel or copper in color.

fruity aroma, mostly banana and clove with background of citrus and grains.

tastes of clove with plenty of yeast. when i poured the first part, there was no way of expecting the yeastness that burst into the glass.

meduim feel with some carbonation.

Poured into a traditional wheat beer glass.

A bit cloudy with a nice two-three finger pillowy head.

Some faint banana notes.

A crisp finish with a bit of honey. Well balaned. Less flavorful than other Hefeweizens I've tried before.

I could drink a few of these- goes well with some BBQ!
